Sizing The AB Fedora

Hey gang. Haven't been here in years, but was a regular poster around 2001 or so.

Back then the hottest hat on the forum appeared to be the Peter Bros. which I purchased and enjoyed. I sized the hat using Harrison Ford sizings that were listed on the board back then. Well I got the hat and put it to use, but I could never really get over the idea that i felt the hat was a bit too tall for my head -

now one reason I felt that way was the front/brim of the hat did not have a nice curve down over the forehead as seen in many scenes such as cairo and in fact, it was almost flat on the front. To me, that was one important aspect of the hat that was missing. Yeah, I could reshape it and all, but that wasn't really the issue. It still looked a bit tall for me (even though my build and size is fairly similar to HF's although younger and a bit smaller of a head (so i think)

So this leads me to a few questions since I am once again looking for a new hat: (adventurebilt of course)

1. Does anyone else feel a hat they purchased was too tall? how did you remedy it?

2. How can you accurately get an idea of how tall you SHOULD make your hat - as in, can you say your head is such and such inches tall/wide and you have a thin build ...etc so you a good look would be X.

3. Can some of you post your hat measurements here? i'd like to get a good idea on some averages - also body size/height/weight etc. would be helpful to try to match up with some of you guys. Also - if you have images to go along (or at least a link) so I can see hat dimentions with hat picture, that'd be great too!

4: (off-topic) anyone know if Roadster Factory still issue MKVII bags?

Perhaps I ask a bizarre question, but i've read through the threads for a few days now and I don't see as many 'sizing-dimention' posts like I remember seeing a few years back.

Thanks gang - glad to be back with the best in the biz in regards to Indy Gear.

Never heard of them. People tend to scope out real MKVIIs (until recently, we were getting used ones for 10 pounds in the UK) or buy the WPG replica. Have a search for threads talking about the WPG MKVII.

Yeah - I'm not really in the market for one. I got one through Roadster Factory years ago (yes, it's a UK/US Company that builds old roadsters in New York I think) and they use the bags for tools. I got mine for $33 I think and it is absolutely fantastic. Just curious because I had checked the threads and nobody talked about them any more.

I'm definitely going to get in touch with Steve when I'm getting close to ordering. I was hoping to get some of the small details out of the way first. I figure he's a fairly busy guy.

I must say I've seen quite a few pictures of some of your AB's and it is quite amazing how great they look.

You know you are an old timer when you refer to the Roadster Factory. If I remember correctly the original bag was used for a shaving kit, but I could be mistaken. I seem to remember a story about the owner hanging it on the rear bumper and ruining it. While trying to find a replacement, he stumbled upon cases and cases of them. I bought 4 MK VII's a few years ago for $25 each. Very nice to deal with on the phone. I believe they no longer have them, although I still get a Roadster Factory catalog religiously, even though I do not have a roadster. :?

As far as sizing a hat, there are a lot of body-shape variables. And of course, personal taste. I like my hats on the large side. It has always been my opinion that the hat has to remain true to its own dimensions. That is, if you have the perfect Raiders hat, but feel that the brim is too wide, once you cut the brim, it will not look right. Maybe better on you , but not as Raider-ish.

I cut a few hats before I realized this and now, it the hat looks a little big, I do not care. Look at my avatar  I have another that is slightly taller as well, but the brim is wider, so it remains in proportion. A bit too big for me, but I am counting on the eventual shrink/taper to set in. Once this happens, I am hoping to have it blocked to my size without stretching it too much. Maybe that will help the taper issue... It can only shrink so much, right?

This probably makes no sense, but welcome back.

IF87, Steve will always take time out to talk with his customers. That's just how he is. And he'll do whatever it takes to produce a fedora you will be happy with. He's set a benchmark for customer service, in my opinion. But if you're curious about your requested details, I'm about 5' 5" and wear a 7 1/4 hat. You can see a couple pictures of me in my hat in the testimonial section of www.adventurebilthats.com. I'm Rick, the guy with the Mexico pics.

Personally, I like the height of the hat. It didn't take me very long to adjust to it, either, especially since most of my vintage fedoras have shorter crowns. Now I think I want all of my hats to be taller!

I was thinking the same thing, Rick. I haven't heard of them for years! Regards. Michaelson

He just looks that way when he is standing on top of everyone's wallets.
