Does anybody know where I can buy Young Indys fedora? I think it´s kinda tough...

Nah... just get the worst Indy fedora you can ;)

seriously though I think the characteristics of it are a large brim, a shorter crown than the raiders crown and its tapered so pretty much any non-dimensionally cut brown fedora should work fine - then beat the heck out of it.

Are you wanting the one Flannery wore in the series, or the one given to Phoenix in LC?

Flannery's hat was nearly unbashed in the front, wasn't it? I believe it had a center dent, but very little embellishment in the front.

Isn't there a theory the Flannery fedora was actually an old LC (stunt?) hat?

No I'm pretty sure he used a new hat, because I remember reading somewhere (I think on IndyDiggs a LONG time ago) about one of the people from HJ shaping the crown especially for the YIJC. :junior: -IJ

Ok, thanks anyway...
The YIJC hat is cool, but The ToD Fedora is even cooler 8) or whatya guys think?

You are probably in a minority here as most people will favour Raiders hat, followed by LC with a few then TOD and hardly any the Young Indy hat.

But is that a bad thing? Heck no!!! You actually probably will have the easiest time acheiving and maintaining the look of your hat as well.

Another thing to consider as well is that what looks best on actors such as Harrison Ford, Sean Patrick Flannery and River Phoenix is not necessarily the same as what will look best on you. Things such as face shape, height, your facial features/dimensions etc will all play a part. I wouldnt worry too much about this but if you have a particularly long face or particularly round face it could make a difference.

What I think I am basically trying to say is there is no right and wrong hat you can chose - its an individual choice for what you like best that feels right for you and you are comfortable with.

Montana;
Lets just say we all have our favourites, though it seems the Raiders look seems to be the one most sought after due to its originality.
I like the ToD look also. ;)

Where can one go to find out which style hats look like on certain head shapes? I am looking into buying a hat but I want to make sure it looks good on my head. Nobody wants to wear a hat that doesnt look good!

To my eye, the young Indy hat had a wider ribbon and no dimentional cut to the brim.

I thought I read somewhere that the YIJC hat was a Herbert Johnson.

I like the Fedora / River Phoenix version in LC - I don't personally care for the YIJC hat (or the series come to that) much, but I also heard it was a Herbert Johnson.

The first season YIJC hat Is one of my favourite hats of the Indy persuation. It really looks like a fedora you'd see in the 20's. Very plug and play, just thrown on and forgot about, very utility. The ribbon is 2" and the brim is wide (no dimentional cut (a movie affectation which was never common in vintage hats)) and the crown is high.

That's really not a bad hat at all. I really like the whole look of Matt's bottom pic: good clothes and good hat. I'd like to see someone sporting that look.

That is without a doubt an HJ. Also, without a doubt, it is not the current HJ block being sold. Fedora

Fedora, that's interesting - I thought it looked quite Last Crusadeish (apologies for the made-up Crusadeish word...)

I'm sure you are right, but can you explain why is this different to the current HJ block?

In theory yes. Assuming its meant to be the same hat that is.

I am going to agree. It almost looks like an untrimmed LC fedora....I would have to see the fedora in motion and from all sides to be sure.

It does look like one of the hats worn by Ford(the still PR photo with he and Connery). But, it does not look like the current HJ block, at least to me.(there is a flatter radius on the top of the hat as worn in the pics by Flannery) The key word is subjectivity here. From my experience with reblocking old and new HJs, I have seen a variety of block shapes used, with no commonality.(as well as different crown heights) It seems that in the past, the Poet model has not been consistent in block shape. I have seen some good straight blocks and then many tapered block shapes. And this has always been part of the problem in achieving a particular look. It would have been so much easier if the blocks used had been consistent throughout. It is my opinion that when Mr. Swales was selling us the hats, he just grabbed whatever hat he had in brown, regardless of the block shape. Hence, the variety that I have personally seen. The current HJ block nails the motor cycle chase scene perfectly, but it is a far cry from the block shape we see when Indy is being tailed by his comrades in the approach to the temple in ROTLA. Different animals. regards, Fedora

Fedora could tell you details. He worked really hard to locate the brazillian source. ....but I believe it was beaver first and then rabbit for TOD and LC.

Just my $0.02.

 I recognise my hat ! ( I bought 2 like this one in the eighties !).
It's a HJ "Temple Dom" when Harrison Ford is on the bridge !

I know there have been some vintage HJs with beaver content around - like that Stetson that was sold from HJ, but I seriously doubt that the Raiders Fedora had any beaver in it.

Rabbit all the way, I'd say, with the difference that back then, they really knew how to make a fine rabbit body. Look at some vintage Borsalinos for instance. I know that 99% of todays rabbit bodies is @#$%, but it doesn't have to be.

Marc

I wouldn't associate the YIJC hat to the ones worn by Harrison Ford. The YIJC hats have an untapered crown and the hat is brown yes, though that is where the similarities end.

It's just a different hat. I will say that I think you can take the Young Indy hat and make it into a Raiders hat, though not vice-versa.

I doubt it has beaver since back then HJ, from my experience, was unconcerned with the content of the felts.

I just creased a hat like the YIJ is creased to show what my block shape would yield if creased in this fashion. http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/yij2.html Opinions, thoughts? Fedora

Could be the same block. Do you have a 2 inch ribbon you can slap on that hat.

Yep, I have one, but I am afraid I just mailed that hat to Austria, but with a different crease. I will do it on the hat I am finishing up now since it is the same block and post a pic of it later on. regards, Fedora

What do you think... could that be a straight 3" brim?

Maybe just under 3".

That would be my guess. 2 7/8 to 3 inches. And now to complicate matters and confuse, does this brim not look close to one of the pics from the streets of Cairo?Image

Awsome.

A lighter brown ribbon and you're set.
Maybe a bit of a curl to the brim too. I think the reason the hat looks flat is weathering. I think it has a bit of a snap brim. You notice in later episodes that the hat droops alot which leads me to believe it is an HJ poet from the 90's and that they just let it shrink and wear down over time.

Thanks, but it was just an accident as I have never made one. That hat there is gonna be a Raiders fedora once I re-crease it and flange the brim. Nice to know that my block will do a decent YIJ hat though. regards, Fedora

I have to agree with Matt on this one. I've always loved the YI fedora (from the earlier episodes... by the "feature length" episodes, it became WAY too tapered). Fedora, you've done a great mock-up, but the 2" still looks too wide to me (and of course, a lighter brown ribbon is needed). Maybe I'll get one of those from you some day... ;) Well done!

Kind regards,
Indy

To add my $.02 worth, the fedoras of the mid teens were quite large. I have a photo taken in 1919 of a young man in a "over sized" style. Big drouping brim and and wide ribbon. The early episodes had it right. I like what you've done Fedora. There just may be a market for it if offered. (I'd like one!!) I asked the same question about the YIJ fedora on an earlier thread.
Ive been in contact with some of the former crew members on the show and have tracked down one of the Seans fedoras. In negotiations at the moment to aquire it to add with several screen used costumes I now have.
