Is there any way to lighten a whiskey coloured whip, or is the opion that whiskey is not too dark?

Upate: Got the whip and a pic of it. Yes I know my idol is naked...it needs some work still.

Probably not, unless you throw the whip in a vat of bleach (now, seriously - don't do that).

I assume we're talking screen accuracy here - "the whip" is supposed to be a bit dark and "antiqued" - natural tan roohide does get darker over time... no need to alter that whiskey-colored one, IMO.

No pics yet, am trading a fellow member for a nice whip though.

I didn't know if perhaps the acetone trick that so many use on their jackets might work on the whip, though I wouldn't want to damage it in any way.

I dunno... for me, going crazy with the jacket was one thing. Wouldn't mess with the whip, though. Ever. The thong is subject to considerably heavier strain - kinetic and otherwise - than a jacket would ever have to endure. Any chemical cosmetic treatment would seriously compromise the whip's structural integrity.

I don't believe anyone here ever distressed their whips... correct me if I'm wrong, guys & gals...

Maybe there's a leather cleaner or leather bleach designed for removing stains? Maybe that could lighten it up a bit.

Its funny becasue most of the time the threads are about how to darken a whip (to which I beleive the answer is use and sunlight/heat).

It does seem to be an odd request, and I assume that from lack of any definitive answers that probably no one has attempted to lighten the colour of a whip. I would try it myself, but I don't know anything about whips or leather in order to know if I am causing major harm to the whip.

That is a beauty! Truly a nice looking whip. Personally, I'd leave it alone, but that's just me.

Natural tan will eventually darken to sort of a "dark orange" color, the "Raiders" color. The dark orange, in turn, will eventually darken to something close to whiskey. What I'm saying is you will eventually end up with whiskey, anyway. It's a beautiful whip. I'd leave it as is.

Nope it was Neolithic's whip.

After seeing it first hand I am now pretty happy with the colour. It is a tad dark, but I wouldn't want to ruin such a nice whip and like many of you have said, Indy's whip does appear quite dark quite often. Now to get me some Pecards and learn to crack it...tried my hand at it but wasn't overly successful, but it comes with time right?

I agree, that's a beautiful whip - I wouldn't take the chance of damaging it. Since nobody's got a quick answer, I'm betting it's either not possible or not worth risking.

As for screen-accurate color...heck, between differing color-balances and multiple whips, I think there's kind of a wide range on the whip color.

That's a beautiful whip - I wouldn't do anything to it. Not too dark at all - heck, I'm waiting for my natural tan ECwhip to age to a similar nice dark brown!

It won't take long once the whip has been used through out the summer months, along with adding a light coat of pecards or Febrings
to the thong once in a while, it acts like suntan lotion, .

I'm a bit surprised that no more whipmakers have piped in on this subject.

You are not going to change the color of that whip. It's a fact. It's whiskey. There is nothing you can do short of spray painting it and we all know thats ridiculous.
Whiskey is a fine color for many people and as long as it is a well balanced whip that cracks nicely, then you have a good whip. But, if you want a more screen accurate look you must ask for natural tan. Some folks go ahead and ask for saddle tan since its a darker brown (with a slight reddish hue), but thats not it either. Whiskey is way too dark for accuracy - whiskey is almost black. I quit buying whiskey colored skins because there is little difference between it and black. Its a very dark brown color - I'd almost call a tobacoo color...

Leave it alone. If you have already bought it and don't like the color, sell it to someone who doesn't mind whiskey - perhaps even a non-Indygear person who loves a good bullwhip, and then buy yourself a natural tan whip.

I just had to weigh in on this subject. IMO there is only one color for an Indy whip. And its not just my opinion. Again, anyone can have any color of Indy whip from black, whiskey, red, saddle tan, or brandy, but none of those are the "screen accurate" color. If any of the above colors are your favorite, then thats what floats your boat. Each to their own. I've sold 2 tone Indy whips. LOL... Who am I to argue with someone when they order a special color? I assume that they aren't looking for any screen accuracy.

I love the color!!! Sell it to me if you dont want it
