Observation from LC

Was watching LC this afternoon and I noticed that in the beginning of the movie when Indy was taking the cross of Cornada for the second time, After he jumped off the ship his hat stayed its original shape unlike in Raiders when Indy jumps into the river and his hat tottaly loses its shape. what is the cause of this? was there just a major amount of stiffener in the LC Fed? Has any one else noticed this?

Yep, I've thought about that one... doesn't really seem to be the same hat (which it indeed isn't - the ROTLA one was left on board the Bantu Wind).
One could assume that the Raiders HJ was indeed made of a finer felt than the LC - as has been pointed out here on COW by our esteemed hat-tricians - thus losing its shape totally when drenched.

Then again, I for one believe that the soaked hat in the Raiders scene also is a "cartoony" touch, made to amuse the audience...

That always bothered me as a kid, Indy losing his gear by leaving it behind on the Bantu Wind. But the more I thought about it I don't think that happened. I doubt Indy could man a sub by himself and that island was likely too far out for short-range boats. Also, the Ark. I don't think Indy and Marion carried it back to the hangar themselves. Maybe some people think the US Army picked them up. Maybe Indy put out an SOS. I doubt that. What he was up to was classified and I doubt any US vessel that picked the SOS would acknowledge it. Even if the "right" people picked it up I'm sure Indy would be disavowed. I'm sure the US military would not want it getting around that they were chasing magical objects to keep Hitler from getting them. So, it made me think, how DID he and Marion get off that island? I think the Bantu picked them up. The Captain and most of the crew saw Indy climb aboard the sub. I'm sure they knew the sub probably had a base nearby so when they came upon the island with the big huge cave in the side it wasn't that hard to figure out. And of course it would now be safe to dock there, as the few Nazis that accompanied Belloq were now dead.

The idea is, it was supposed to be in the style of the old adventure serials of the 30's, when less questions were asked about such things, and the audience just held on for the ride instead. Just something Bogie1943 pointed out to me when I asked him similar questions.

The novel and the Marvel comics adaption explain that. In both of those he actually has his whip with him. He thinks the sub is going down but it only submerges to just below the surface. He uses his whip to tie himself to the periscope. The ride is so long that he actually falls asleep, if memory serves. In the novel he's pretty much in full gear. His hat floats away and is lost, which really stunk.

I think the general thinking on this is that the U-Boat remained on the surface as it cruised to the island. It seemed as if the Germans had control of the sea in that area, so there was no reason for it to submerge. Though U-Boats could submerge as much as 200 meters, they usually did so for tactical or defensive purposes, because they used much more fuel underwater than on the surface.

That being said, as a kid, I always assumed that he found a hatch somewhere and snuck onboard, but I think my previous statement is closer to what the filmakers were thinking.

WAAAAAY OT - but have you ever let Guybrush actually sit there for ten minutes? It's the only way I know of that you can die in any of the MI games. He drowns and the controls on the bottom of the screen change to 'bob' 'float' 'drift' etc. Awesome

Also, just a thought on the hat shape thing. It might be the amount of time the hat spent in the water. I remember hearing that the 'catching the plane' scene in Raiders took a loooong time to film. They had numerous takes and ford kept missing or not being able to hold onto the plane. The longer that hat stayed in the water the worse it would look. It's possible they were able to film the LC scene in fewer takes, so the hat retained much of it's shape. Just a thought.

The Sub-ride is covered for. Actually You can see the back of Indy on the sub just before it reach the cave/hangar.
There are stills from the shooting of the peciscope-drag.

As for transporting the Ark away and from the island, You have gotta see
a movie called "Temple of Doom". The minerail-chase was writting for Raiders, but got cut due to time and money.

But in short Marion and Indy gets the ark on a minewagon, outrace the last of the Nazies, and is able to sail away from the now empty sub-base...
