How different is the DM whip today from the ones used in Raiders? When I talked to Morgan, he said that the whips back then were made of calfskin because of an embargo on roo. Other then that, what are the visual differences?

At 8 inches, that knot is right over the end of the 8 inch nail spike. That's were there is a lot of force and knots have failed right over the spike. As an engineer, placement of that knot at 8 inches would be an integrity issue with him - BIG TIME. This is because he knows the failure rate.

I was also wondering if the actual knot has changed. In some of the Raider pictures...it looks more like a cone. Now they look more like a ball?

This has been dscussed a lot of times. Many, many postings exist in the whip section. Just do a search. I have even posted measurements and diagrams. It's more than just knot placement and shape of knots.

My opinion of Morgan vs Strain

I've owned some nice whips. I used to have two joe strains (10' & 12'), and I currently own a DM 10'. My opinion is that joe strain makes a tighter braid with a fast a fluid action. DMs braid is not as tight but with a much wider cut of leather. DM looks more like an Indy whip but the joe strain feels a bit more solid. I've kept my DM because it functions well and has the added bonus of looking the part.

That's a good synopsis between a Strain and a Morgan.
