Hey guys, now I've only had 3 Wested jackets in my day, 2 lambskins and 1 goat briefly. The two lambskins ripped in the same place, the opening of the handwarmers, now I'm not putting excessive force on the pockets, I think I the handwarmer openings arent big enough to let my hands in without pulling on that seam, but because this is the second time this happened to one of my jackets I'm not as bummed out as I might usually be, but i'm just curious to see if its happening to anybody else out there? I mean do I just have huge incredible hulk hands that can go threw any jacket out there? Whats the deal?

Seriously mate, you might want to consider having the stitching at the bottom of the handwarmers reinforced when you have your repair done or even having the handwarmers stitched up altogether, as some folks have done.

I don't have a problem with mine, but then I never use them as 'hand warmers', I only use them to throw my car keys in and suchlike.

by tear, do you mean TEAR, or just the stitching came out??

I took it to mean the stitching had come away at the bottom of the handwarmers?

I hope that is the case - or has the leather actually torn?

If its torn, I would think about sending it back for replacement - that shouldn't happen through normal use! That makes me angry...

I mentioned previously that the stitching on the handwarmer pocket of my cowhide Wested came loose, and now there is a hole going through to the inside/liner of the jacket. I never use the pockets, for stuff or for hands.

When I ordered my Lambskin for Christmas, I requested reinforced stitching for the handwarmer pocket openings, and spoke to Gerry about this as an option.

So far, no Demon Roll, and no tearing! Fingers crossed.

I had the handwarmer pockets on my Wested goat stitched up mainly because I think the main pockets are perfectly adequate and I think the handwarmers are uneccessary - and I was always paranoid that I'd get em caught on a chair arm/ car door handle etc. and tear them. Also I think the jacket has cleaner looks now the handwarmers are gone! Maybe you should consider having this done on future jackets? It's cheap to get done (but make certain you go to a professional leather tailor). Also I expect Wested's would do it when they make the jacket.

anyways it looks like the stitching came lose and ripped open, the leather is in good condition still. This tear wasnt as bad as my first one when there was an actual hole in the leather, but I think i got it caught on something to actually do that, but i already contacted wested about getting the stitching reinforced in my next jacket, it is an odd place to have stitching dont you think?

Its in a bad place for getting snagged in chair arms - and a few times I've caught it in the handbrake of my car.

Its a good job Indy didn't snag his jacket on a tree whilst running away from the Hovitos, or it might have been a really short film.

Went down to Wested to have a handwarmer repaired yesterday, I may have caught it on something - not sure, but the stitches were coming out. I've used the jacket for a year and use the handwarmers frequently. I guess the openings are a natural stress point .

Fixed on the spot in 4 minutes As good as new. Saw some lovely black horsehide while I was there, so a horsehide Minority Report jacket may be on the cards.

As usual great customer service - no charge for the repair. I got a pair of Indy trousers while I waited for the jacket repair - hemmed on the spot as well. All around a great visit.

I have a related issue I'll pose to the group; hope you'll indulge a bit of background.

I received my custom Wested in January 2000 (Raiders, lambskin, cotton lining, brass fittings for those of you keeping score at home.) It was a rush job that was ordered at the first of November for a Christmas delivery. I'm afraid it turned into a new year's delivery - and as a result of the rush, the finish on the jacket was disappointingly sloppy.

The most noticeable problem is jacket pockets. The flaps all have little, white interfacing threads showing. One of the studs is off-center. The jacket pocket doesn't stay closed very well. The seams on the side straps are starting to show some normal wear and tear.

Otherwise, the jacket's aging pretty gracefully, and I've given it the suggested leather treatment every year or so. As it gets older, though, the threads showing are becoming more noticeable. I want the jacket to look well-worn, not cheap.

Anyone out there have suggestions for a four-year overhaul?

Someone suggested just mothballing it and buying a new Wested, reasoning that Wested has improved its Indy line since I bought my original. Any thoughts on that?

Yeah I say, keep it for a beatin in jacket and get a new one, Westeds products are 10 times better than what they were then because thats the same time I ordered my first wested.

By the way I got the pockets fixed and reinforced, it was nicely done that only cost $6 ya can't beat that.


I'm going to be ordering a wested goatskin pretty soon, when the funds are available.

Did you get the repairs done locally or did you send it back to Wested?

Also, did the liner have to be opened up to do the repairs? I've always wondered how repairs like that get done and wether or not the jacket needs to be deconstructed to do the job.

Yup, I had them done locally, she didnt deconstruct the jacket, she just went threw everything, the leather and lining, but she did an amazing job fixing it, very unoticable from the outside! You can't see any extra stitches but you can tell their there.

When I had my handwarmer pockets stitched up they (not Wested) had to open up the lining. I resisted this, but the guy persuaded me they were experts and it could be put back together and I'd never know it had been opened up. And they did. Remarkable. No evidence of operation. But these guys were clearly expert leather tailors. Just shows what can be done.
