hat storage or display

When not on your head, where and how do you keep your lids? Do you put them away or on display. Please do post pix!

Would you recommend a hatbox? I found a vintage 1940's Stetson hatbox (unfortunately empty) in an antique store and am considering buying it. Most of my other lids are clustered on top of a hat/coat rack.

I may. It's only $15, though it may be too short for an Adventurebilt.

Anyway, what do you guys do storage/display-wise for your hats?

I have an retro cathedral-style radio that acts as a perfect hat stand for my Akubra. I have a vintage Indian-style box which acts as a great stand for my Adventurebilt. They are both within reach, but I find myself reaching for the AB much more.

I put my Peters Bros Borsalino on the TV, with the front brim hanging over the front. I find myself glancing at it many times - even more than the TV sometimes! Oh man, I'm obsessed!

personally I put my PB Custom, my Wested, and my MK VII on a hat rack in my room. Add that to my old desk and my 40's/50's style radio, and I've got an entire Indy room. :junior: -IJ

I place my Keppler on the post of my four poster bed , but when I get my Adventurebilt it will sleep in the box........ahhhh who am I kidding....It wont leave my head.

I put my Akubra on a shelf in my closet, with the front of the brim hanging over the side, so as not to distort the brim. But it's on my head 90% of the time. My Dorfman sits on a little bamboo thing on my headboard. From where you are, (standing) and with it's angle (downwards, and slightly away from you) it looks not half bad. It's a great display piece.

For display/daily use I have a nice hatstand that holds about 6 lids. When not in use, I keep them in hatboxes.

Indidana Dudley,

I have both of those items also. I use the second one when I am on a long trip and put the hat in the back seat. The back of the brim sometimes hits the headrest when I wear it while driving. While on a short trip around here, that doesn't get to be too annoying, but on a long trip, the hat has to go in the back seat after awhile.

That second one looks like you could twist up something just like it with a coat hanger! Twenny bux US seems scandalous for such a thing.

I'm thinking I'll put my Adventurebilt on a wigform whilst I sleep.

...that and ITG's recent online auction give me an idea I'll develop further. Perhaps I'll call it the Forrestal Hat Stand.

It's my old DP and I use it mainly for a display piece, by my posters from all the Indy movies. The hat looks a little misshappen, but it retains its shape very well.

Me I have on top of my refrigerator a straw Fedora I picked up in Nassau, I then just stack my hats.
1st is my old Stetson that might go up for sale hint ...hint. 2nd is my Keppler (which I find I don't wear as much)
and lastly my HJ I bought of Waco and reblocked by Fedora.
I'm trying to make a hat like rack in my den
I have a life cast of Angelina Jolie head (just the front half) I'm going to mount it on to a peice of cherry which will turned. Around the head I have my gun bely w/holster and of course my Joe Strain bull whip.

But I digress, right now my hats are within easy reach for when I leave the house.

I have an old coat rack that I had mounted on my wall. I have the majority of my Indy Gear on there. I have my WPG bag with the hat on one peg, my WSP gunbelt on the other, and I just used an old lether belt for my Indy "Bowie" Knife on the other. My Wested is hung on another peg elswhere in my room.
Anyways, I have a question for all of you: I was brought up to ALWAYS rest a fedora upside down on it's crown, as to prevent ruining the brim. My question is this: Seeing how most of us are trying to emmulate Indy gear and the distressing, etc., does it matter if your going to rest a fed on it's brim, seeinghow you want to "distress' it anyways? Anybody follow what I'm saying?.......Anybody?!

I was just puzzling out this issue lately, and scouring the web for alternatives. I just ordered some hat hooks that attatch to peg board. I am going to put up a piece of peg board in my closet so that I can put several of these hat hooks up for my rapidly increasing hat collection. I had to purchase a large amount of them because of the minimum order amount of the company, so I'll definitely have extras if anybody is interested. I ordered around 30 of 'em and I certainly won't need much more than a quarter of them. This is what they look like:

The only problem that I see with these, is that the hat is going to be resting on the center dent of the crown. I prefer the ones that the hat rests on upside down, with a wire holding the base of the brim.

I thought resting the hat like that was bad for the brim? I think I read someplace that it could distort it or something. Maybe that's after long period of time, and maybe you just have your hat like that for a few minutes... I'm not sure.

Can somebody clear that up? Resting the hat flat-brimmed on something -good or bad for the hat?

Well, it's bad if you have a shaped brim or brim that has curl down in front.

The brims of my Indy hats are perfectly flat. The only get their shape when I put it on my head. They way my head pushes and pulls the brim makes it look the way it does.

Here is the exact same hat exact same day.

At rest on a chair, shelf, table, etc..

And on my head

I kinda got the idea when I saw Indy's hat sitting on a table and realizing the brim was pretty flat.

Just my observations and what works for me. Your mileage may vary.
