Hello all!
I was wondering if the current offering of Peter's cowhide is the same as it was 2 years ago when it was called "new finish" or "lambtouch". On the Wested website, it is labeled "standard dark brown".
I'm sorry, but I've been away from here for so long.

There is a chance it could mean the standard Dk brown lambskin. Unless of course it states "standard dark brown cowhide"

I am pretty sure that Peter no longer offers that particular hide. I would recommend highly the cowhide Peter has. I have had mine for years and I really love the cowhide he uses, distressed nicely and once it has broken in has such a wonderful look. I am already pondering another Wested after the holidays, but I can't pick a hide. I want a LC pattern and am leaning towards Authentic Lamb again, and horsehide sounds nice too. I love horsehide, but I can't decide.

Not sure either. Sometimes what was 'new' becomes 'standard', so maybe the new finish BECAME the standard, as the last 'standard' cowhide I saw was a LOT softer than what USED to be called 'standard'....it was more like the old 'new finish' cowhide he introduced 4 years ago. One can never be sure.... Anyway, it was definitely an improvement. Regards. Michaelson

Thanks for the info. I think I'll try emailing Peter direct for his input. I seem to remember the new finish cowhide being Peter's favorite.

I have had my pre-distressed for several years now....after many applications of pecards -- it just keeps getting better and better...buttery soft these days! I ordered a black standard cowhide TOD, last year at this time as a present for a relative --- it was superb! Wested does not distress Black hides, but just the same it was excellent. I don't think you would be disapointed at all with cow hide. I also used to have one of their lamb touch hide jackets in black and it was very nice too. It was lighter in weight than the standard cow, but very durable. Hope this helps you a bit. W>

I'd only add that you need to keep your location in mind as to how long you can wear the cowhide jacket....if you're located in a cooler climate, then it's perfect, but if you live in Southern climes like I do, then it won't get worn very much, as they're pretty heavy and VERY warm. Great for these winter temperatures, but murder when it warms up a bit. Regards. Michaelson

I have two Wested Cowhide jackets. One is the newest dark brown cowhide and the other is the Lambtouch. They are two completely different type skins!
The current cowhide is moderately firm and while soft it is still a bit stiff and has some weight to it. The current cowhide also distresses very easily with acetone and one needs to be careful if sanding to be very light or the dye sands off. It is a great jacket to distress though!
The Lambtouch cowhide is incredibly soft, it feels like butter and drapes in a liquid way. It feels like a more refined leather and moves with your body more, rather than holding its own shape. The Lambtouch however will not distress with acetone as the dye appears to run completely through the leather so you won't see any change. If you lightly sand it you can get a lightening of the surface which goes away completely if you apply Pecards dressing to it. The Lambtouch is also lighter weight than the current cowhide.

I love my LC horsehide. Unsure if Peter is now offering a more authentic colour in it, but I quite like the russet tones in my jacket; makes it a bit unique.

To my mind, if you already have soft Indy jackets in authentic colours, the opposite is a tough jacket, like horse, in a non-authentic colour.

It just depends on whether you want some jackets that are all pretty much the same, or some variety.
