I was in NY on a crappy business visit. After a 1.5 hour ride of calamity with a new shuttle bus driver who didn't know his way around NY. 3 NY ladies yelling at each other (as only New Yorkers can ), and a hotel that's in an area that hotels shouldn't be in ... I called home to say hi to my wife.

She said a package came in. And much to my surprise "The Adventurebilt Fedora" was there. I had my wife take it out and tell me about it. I suffered for the week.

I had purchased this a whileback and like the rest of us have waited in suspense to see it is beyond what I imagined!!!

At last I got home and checked it out. Here it is without me bashing or touching it up at all. Like Hemingways (which is a beauty Tim!), I asked for Raiders all the way. Take a look! (Excuse the ugly mug!)

One question

I asked for Raiders all the way.

When you say Raiders all the way what exactly did you ask for? Anything in paticular in the way you asked.

I read about the hat liner Steve decided to use, but hadn't yet seen it.

Hey Skip : Just beautiful!!! I was wondering how you sized up what you wanted. I seem to recall you wearing a size 56 Fed D? Did you ask for a 56cm or in US sizes? I'm curious since mine is in the process and don't want to make any unnecessary gaffs .

Skip that hat ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!! Dont worry I wont swip your's if you come to the TOMB event. Even with a strecher I'd never get my giant melon in that awesome lid. So Hemingway better keep one hand on that lid of his at all times!

The felt is very soft! And it's creepy how it bends and stays without stiffener in the brim. My Federation Deluxe fights me every step of the way to get the brim where I like it.

The reverse taper is definately there.

P.S. I'll post the dimensions and a detailed description about the lid later today. I have to teach. Any guesses on the felt or dimensions? Any Archaeologists out there?!

As far as I know, the Raiders specs. It just so happens to be real close to Fedora's personal specs.

There is stiffener in the crown. Minimal to none in the brim (just what I wanted, BTW!!! )

Hey Kilgour! Good to hear from you! The hat fits perfectly for me. I have a Rossolino that is a little too snug at 7 1/8. My Fed Deluxe is a 7 3/8, which shrank over the past 2 years.

I will give a bigger hint to the felt ... it is harder to "tear".

Having worn the hat for a week, I have noticed how light it is on my head.

There's something to be said for making sure you get the right size hat. This hat fits me so perfectly! I don't get a headache after a day of wearing it, and it's not so loose that I feel like I'm wearing a Tupperware container on my head! ( That's a funny image!?) If Indy wore a Tupperware container, 3thoubucks would be figuring out how they inserted a wire into the edge! (JK 3TK!)

I do have a question though, ...

Which fur/felt weighs the most? Assuming the same size and thickess of the felt. It feels to me that rabbit hair is heavier. My Akubra feels heavier than the ABF (AdventureBilt Fedora).

Very nice hat! I took my beaver to the Post Office and it weighed 3.7 oz.

The other blends could weigh the same it just depends on how much the felt needs to be pounced

Another important factor is density of the felt. You could easily have two hats the same size and thickness and one would be heavier than the other. From what I have seen, good felt is dense felt. A little heavier to wear, but worth it in other ways.

Density certainly makes sense. The Akubra isn't that dense, but "feels" so much heavier than the ABH. Maybe just a percieved feeling. Bink said he was thinking of a Nutria, which got me thinking about weight. I have no idea what the consistancy/density/etc. of Nutria is?

I know it's made for it, but I can't. It's too beautiful. Yours looks awesome! Maybe, if the rain stops, you can get some photos outdoors.

Thanks Tim. I was going to wear it in the rain today, but it's like getting a pair of new sneakers ... you want it to look nice for a while!

I'll take some shots in the daytime. When it stops raining.

I do want to give it even more character to get the Cairo look to it, but I'm with you!

You know, I'm sure I'll pamper my Adventurebilt for a while, but it's only a matter of time before I take it anywhere. I was thinking of leaving it at home during my trip to Cancun this February and taking my Akubra instead, but the more I think about it, the more likely the Adventurebilt will be the one to go. I mean, adventure is half its name!

I don't want to start too much of a debate but what about the turn?...How many think its essential to a good looking hat? I'm really not sure what to do when mine comes off the block.

You know, Kilgour, that's a good question. I'm having mine made without the turn, but Steve reminded me that the turn didn't happen until AFTER the beginning of the movie! So the opening sequence of Raiders shows an unturned hat, which means with or without the turn, the Adventurebilt is screen accurate!

Hey Bink: that's something I didn't know. Thanks for the advice, I'm probably going to follow your lead on this since I want to be able to wear the hat daily with my dress work clothes and think that the turn might be a bit more appropriate for adventuring. (Maybe I'll turn the Nutria)

Doe's anyone else wear there Indy lids to work? Or is it just me?
I get the impression more than a few of us do...

I really like the turn, but at the same time, it looks really sharp with the whole hat symmetrical!

But to feed the Indyesque needs, I had to have the turn in there on this hat! It Raiders for me.

Yeah, Skip, I've gone and ordered an Adventurebilt now- and I asked for a bit of the Raiders Turn too- that brim action is really looking great in yours.
