Top Secret
I made a block last week, pulled my hat off it today. Not bad. I made my block like my Miller Indy and PBBM blocks which are similar to each other, (I made the transition from sides to top a little squarer and the front and back a little steeper- just for fun). I bashed my newly reblocked Miller, and compared it to Indy's hat sitting sideways on the Imam's table. The top of his hat was more arched than mine! More arched than my PBBM too, for that matter. Why? why why why ect. .. Then things happened fast. I popped the crown up on my duct tape Raiders hat, which HAS the Imam's arch, then I ran over to my closet and got out my Alden..., I mean my Burlington "Huckle" Tonak, which I haven't touched since the day I bought it, I popped out the top bash, and the situation was the same as my duct tape hat- When both of their open crowns are viewed from the front, the top is nearly flat- but when veiwed from the side the top is very arched. The top of the Miller and PBBM look flat veiwed from the front OR side! So if you want a Raiders hat, The Miller and Borsalino blocks won't cut it. -Well I'll make this change in my block, but I'm curious ..do any other Indy hats- Fed, Optimo, HJ, come with this essential "huckle hump?" Unbashed front view, pbbm, Huckle, Duct. Tops are similar. Unbashed side views, pbbm's top is flater than the others.

Very interesting!
On a side note, it amazes me that HJ didn't at least make a note of the original block - I would have thought that being able to recreate the hat was very important, in case additional hats were called for later. They surely knew that, once they had the raw body, it was 'all about the block' from there on in. The original block must still be sitting around somewhere, just waiting to be discovered.

They had the blocks of course, both the LC and the Raiders. My guess is they used the Raiders block for later hats, but only by mistake! I have seen only one Hj with the Raiders block shape. Our administrator sent me a HJ from around 1990, and it had the right block. None of the others that I have seen have had it. I think you got what was on the shelf when Mr. Swales was there. The luck of the draw. Fedora
