Did anyone spot the Ebay auction which ended recently for two 'screen used' IJ hats? $3000 for two hats which were not even Fedoras.

(EDITED out the eBay link just in case - please see the link a few posts down for pics).

Man, those aren't even close...they look more like leather hats to me from the pics. I sure hope the buyer isn't legit. :?

Looks like cloth hats. Similiar to the ones given away at one of the film's opening. Perhaps Ford and Connery wore these in a PR appearance? Fedora

"Screen used"?!!
:ducttape: :-# That's what I'd like to do with the eBay seller, after Flattery's done with him of course.

Buyer beware... look at this dude's feedback. The only piece of feedback where he was previously a seller was where he sold a toy car worth $1.25. So he's clearly not even a prop dealer... even if you WERE unsure about the look of the hats.

Even if the Indiana Jones character became a bum on the streets at the end of Indy4, I don't believe he would wear one of those monstrosities.

BTW, it ***** that OB1AL couldn't post a link to this atrocity, for all to giggle at, yet in another thread, "someone" posted a link to a live Ebay auction, and even admitted that he knew it would probably get deleted.

Huh? 'splain yourself, Blues. You were the one who complained when he did it too, as it could have affected the outcome of your bid!!!! :-s Durned if we do, and durned if we dont. Regards. Michaelson

Holy smoke. That's just horrible. ](*,)

I really don't think it would even take a gearhead to realize that those two hats aren't even close to being Indy Fedoras, or anything that would be worn on the silver screen (unless the movie was a comedy).

On the issue of informing eBay, there really isn't much you can do in that regard. There's no way to really prove that the seller is lying. Of course, we all know it's bull, but again, proving that is much harder than saying it.

Once again fellow gearheads, we see the classic case of "Caveat emptor", or, "let the buyer beware".

Strider

Michaelson, what I am trying to say, and maybe I was unclear, was that THIS auction was more of a joke, that most folks here would never believe that the hats were authentic movie memorabilia.
OB1AL did the correct thing, and DIDN'T post the link, even tho it was a very amusing auction.
He obeyed the rules.
The other auction is the "real deal", and the person who posted the link even admitted that he knew it would get deleted.
He dis-obeyed the rules, and knowingly so.
I don't have any beef with anyone over it, just saying how the rules are a double edged sword.
I in no way badmouthed the mods about the entire situation.
Hopefully it wasn't received in that fashion.

Blues...it's late in the day, and I'm stuck here at the Institute with 2 hours left in producing an Engineering class. Bear with me... I'm easily irritated for no good reason. You're right, it was read by this reader incorrectly.  Regards. Michaelson

Yeah, Michaelson, think of the wall, for pity's sake. Besides, that's NOT what we mean when we say "bash your hat."

I don't know. The advertisement doesn't mention them being fedoras worn in the movie. It is rather vague. Perhaps Ford and Connery wore them on their lunch break or something stupid like that. Other than that, I believe the words are very open ended. my thoughts. :-k

Yeah, yeah, I can see it. The ribbon definitely looks screen accurate. I do hope that they give them a certificate of authenticity. \:D/

It would be all too easy to fabricate a 'Southebys' COA to go along with two old yardsale hats, take a photo next to an Indy poster, call them 'screen used' by Ford and Connery  and slap them up on eBay hoping for a quick buck. What was it Barnum said again?

I don't think these hats had ANYTHING whatsoever to do with IJ - I hope nobody's fooled by that COA nonsense.

Again, I return everyone to this 'dealers' past experience of selling a toy car for $1.25.

The situation ***** - and it is wrong, yes, but some people should be #### well more careful when they use eBay and do things like examine people's feedback, especially when they decide to throw around $3000.

Posted: Tue Nov 16, 2004 4:39 am

Agreed Rob - at $3000, I would expect any potential buyer to do their homework.

Al,

You mean a certificate of authenticity may not be worth the paper that it is written on? Who knew! #-o

Well, the $3000 bid may have been a shill bid too. There's no guarantee the payment will even be made. I see it happen all the time in high end watch auctions. Many times these type auctions are only to build up the sellers reputation, and the items never really exchange hands with any 'unknown' buyer, if you follow my meaning. :? Electronic auctions are getting to be mine fields, and the danger areas are just becoming larger and larger for the occasional bidder. Sad. Regards. Michaelson

Well... if you use a hat to patch a hole in a window screen, doen't that technically count as a "screen used hat?"

Or use a hat to swat a fly from the television screen when watching Raiders. Indiana Jones screen used.

Or use your hat to "screen" certain parts of ToD, hence "Indiana Jones screen used hat."

Or if questioned, pretend you had a buddy called John Screen who sold you the hat after using it to dress as Indiana Jones.  ](*,)

Or, if someone leaves a message on your answering machine giving spoilers to Indy IV you don't want to hear, just stuff the hat in your ears and use it to screen your calls.
