why yes they are shells, .44 mag ,I carry it under my Wested in a shoulder holster when out and about. never know when you might need to reload.I will upload a pic or two in a few moments.

Why have I hijacked the thread?

Well here in alaska we dont have snakes , or rats, the things we have need a little bigger deturent than say a torch...like ,Bears ,Moose,Fox, wolves,Carabou,and the occasional bad guy at least we dont have to go through tha hassel of getting any licence or anything,just pay and pack.

Well Snakewhip_Sable I took your advice on the avitar, what do you guys think?

Blizzard, your 'hidden agenda' photo reminds of something that happened to my father-in-law years ago. He was sitting in a small cafe in Northern Kentucky eating breakfast, and was sitting next to a local sheriff deputy. He reached into his pocket to pay for his meal, and took out the small 22 caliber single shot derringer he always carried. The deputy just sat there looking at the gun, and asked my father-in-law 'do you have a permit to carry that?'

My father-in-law didn't even look up, but pulled his coat back, revealing the Colt .357 Python he was carring in a sholder holster, saying. "Sure...THIS permits me to carry THAT !"

The deputy grinned, and went back to drinking his coffee.

Sounds like Kentucky to me. Drive across the river to Ohio and it is a completely different world. Amazing that two places that close can be so different.

I carry a 1911 that I built in a Galco Miami Classic shoulder system. I was concerned about the thinness of the Wested and if it would print more readily but was very pleasantly surprised at how well it stays concealed.

But to put this back on topic, about the Replix, I've heard some views expressed about the liner and leather band being "cheap." Opinions on this?

It's not just the Replix, the poet hats in the Swaines Adney Brigg shop are the same. The liner is quite nice - although mine actually has a small tear in it after about a month, but it's really not too bad.

The sweatband is OK too, nice and soft but just not as well finished as an Optimo or even an Akubra. The sweatband has what I can only describe as an 'unfinished' top, which gives an uneven and slightly rough look to the hat. Doesn't effect the comfort one bit though.

Tell me about it, jts. I was born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, (my family settled Wheelersburg, and the town named for them too) so you're technincally 'preaching to the choir' on that one. Regards. Michaelson

I guess my concern is with the quality of the hat in general. I know that the major stumbling block(:roll:) has been the block of the hats. Now the hats are starting to appear with a fairly decent block. But my question is are the hats worth it, quality wise? Or are these hats just being picked up because they are an HJ and that's what Ford wore? Is this hat an improvement over the other offerings? Is it better felt, softer, more true?

I'm keeping my eye on the new S&W/Thunder Ranch .44 Special coming. Supposed to be a fairly accurate reproduction of the S&W HE2. The only drawback is the shiny gold Thunder Ranch emblem on the side. Just a bit too gaudy for my tastes. Retail price is around $900, so it should sell for about $650-$700.

Have both of those. If, however, you just want something to rattle you from head to foot then I suggest the .500 S&W. Don't go for the puny loads either. I've not been brave enough to tackle the one with the shorter barrel yet. Maybe one day...

It's pure Indy, man. Looks great; rock on. So that's the law in Alaska? You can just buy your piece and lug it around, concealed, with no problem? Man.. ..I'm from California... ...the concept just seems so foreign to me.

If someone pulled out a gun here, even something as small as a single-shot derringer, if there was a police officer within a mile radius of the joint, they'd be in there with guns drawn so fast your head would spin. Then again, this *is* San Diego.

a couple years ago I went hiking with the family, we ran into a state trooper at the head of the trail we chatted for a bit and at the end of our visit his words were "Well have a good hike and I hope you'r packing, there have been some bear sitings lately" so the moral is I guess that law inforcement here prefers you to be armed so they dont have to come and rescue your but.lol it seems that they expect you to have a weapon cuz everyone does.... sure cuts down on assaults....people dont mug grandma if she might have a 357 mag in her purse...

I think Alaska and Vermont are the only two states that have unrestricted carry. Ohio has some rather draconian laws, and they are vague at that. But we make do with what we have at the moment.

I it were illeagal for us to carry here in Alaska they would have to lock up 90% of the population , not to mention they would need to have wildlife officers on every trail mountain and river to protect the public.when you are here you aint in kansas toto! this is the real deal one mistake and you dont come home to mama.so better to be well armed just in case...and ummmm oh yea, the fedora from HJ fits well and the quality is is incredible.

Comments on the felt? Softness? Thickness?

the felt is very soft to the touch, but holds its shape well, it is a little thicker than a penny, it is a deep chocolate brown, the ribbon is several shades darker than the hat. the quality in the seams is easy to see the leather band was stiff at first but after several days of wear is has softened up ,the hat was a little tight at first but I also purchased a hat jack from David Morgan and now the hat is perfect,the hat came pre -bashed it was very close to what I wanted just did a little fine tuning, the liner is a very soft silk , it has the HJ logo in gold script,I will post more pics of the hat as soon as I finish this post.the one thing that surprised me about the hat was the fact that it was very light , I guess I am used to wearing my leather hat which is quite heavy.the HJ is so light that I forget I have it on sometimes.now I am certainly no expert on hats but for the money I dont think you could find a better lid .to me this is Indys hat.
