Around how long was Indys whip from the movies? Say, if I wanted to buy myself a bullwhip, about how many feet would I be looking for?

Take a look through the archives... generally, it's between 8 and 12 feet, so 10 feet is a good "happy medium." I prefer 8 feet, but it's just that those are easier to work with... you could try 10 feet, but you need more space, and more skill... I don't know how much MORE skill you need though, than to use an 8 footer.

I THINK that 12'ers are louder too... but correct me if I'm wrong.

Shane

Sweet, thanks for the info. I've always wondered about that.

I've always believed that 8 feet was the length. The Cairo scene in Raiders has been examined and cross examined repeatedly and everyone has been in agreement that it was an 8 foot bullwhip.

According to Sergei, Mr. duke is correct about the Cairo scene. Sergei had done a pretty in depth analysis and determined the length to be eight feet in the Cairo scene. However, lengths of up to 16 feet were used as well as some specially made whip(s) that had steel cables in them for swinging.

Strider, it sounds like you may be making your first whip purchase. If so, I'd say start with an 8 footer. You can learn all your basic and some advanced cracks without dealing with the extra length and weight of a ten footer. I'm only now getting to the point where I'm going to be getting a ten footer. The few times I tried a ten footer were tricky to me b/c I'm so used to 4, 6, and 8 foot whips. Anyway, I'd encourage you to dig around in the Bullwhip section and you can find others' suggestions to the same question you posed.

Welcome to COW!

Also consider weighing up what you prefer in:

1) Looks - different lengths look different coiled on your belt

2) Ease of use - an 8fter will probably be much more accessible to begin with than a 12 fter

Although there were varying lengths used throughout the production of the films, it is my understanding that the character's whip is supposed to be 10'.

David Morgan is credited with making the bullwhips used in the Indiana Jones Trilogy.
#455 Bull Whip, 10 ft. Our own production bull whip, used in the Indiana Jones movies, is a moderately heavy whip with the weight carried out well into the thong. The butt foundation is about 8 inches long. The whip is well balanced and has a 12 plait kangaroo overlay. The 10 foot length is measured from the butt to the end of the braid, not including the fall. Hand crafted by David Morgan. Color is Natural Tan."
We supplied over 30 bull whips of the 451 series for the Indiana Jones movies. These ranged in length from 6 feet to 16 feet. The standard length carried in the movies was the No. 455 10 ft. bull whip. The other lengths were used in special stunts. All were in the natural tan color.

strider, at the QM, I'm sure we'll have various length whips you can try out to see what length you like. I personally prefer an 8 foot.

10' feet its the standard length he carried! & it gives a good look with a reasonable length IMO.
