Last Wednesday while I was at work, Mrs. Bufflehead called and said that I had a package. I asked if it was a fairly large box and she said that it was. I knew it was my new Herbert Johnson from Todd's Costumes. Well, I couldn't wait to get home from work.

When I opened the box, I was very pleased. It is a better looking hat than I thought it was going to be. The felt was about the same thickness as my Keppler and it wasn't all that stiff. Todd laid a pretty nice bash on the lid and I don't think that I am going to mess with it at all. The fit is superb and it is very comfortable. It definitely quenches my desire for a hat made by the original maker. It is my new favorite lid and it is too bad it did not make it here in time for the "summit in the city".

If anyone has a burning desire to obtain an HJ, please consider getting it from Todd. I talked to him a couple of times on the phone and thru e-mails. You will not find a nicer person to do business with. Thanks, Todd.

PS The adjustable whipholder is nice too, but it is not as thrilling as the lid.

Hey Buff,
Congratulations on the new lid. I had heard that the sizes run a tad small. Has this been your experience?
Just curious.
And, as always, it would be nice to see some photos.

HJ,

That's what I had heard also. I have a Keppler and this new HJ and I ordered the same size in both. Both hats fit me perfectly fresh out of the box.

Now for the weird part. The second time we went to Gettysburg this year it drizzled rain all day long. It was the first time that my Keppler got wet. It is not tapered at all and it looks exactly the same as when I got it. It is just bigger. I had to put some foam in it to make it fit. I keep waiting to see if it will shrink back to its original size, but so far it hasn't. It is kind of like a plant, water it and it will grow.

The only thing that I ever did to my Keppler was sray it once with some Scout Rain and Stain Protectant.

So I would say just order your actual size and you should get a good fit. If you order from Todd, just give him a call and he will discuss it with you and measure it before he ships it to you. And he will take care of it if it still doesn't fit. He is a great guy to do business with.

Congrats on the new lid Buff. How durable would you say the HJ is. I'm trying to decide on lid for my Bday in Jan, and can't decide between a Fed, a PB or an HJ. Thanks man.

Geoff

p.s. Pictures would be cool. Would like to see the lid.

Hi, I just wanted to add to the post about Todds Costumes. I also ordered a Herbert Johnson from Todd. Todd is a great guy and I was very pleased overall with my order. I had my hat shapped LC, not too even per my request. The hat was shipped very fast after Todd received it from HJ. The shape of the hat and the demetions are very good, much better then my first hat I bought directly from HJ (short crown small brim). Todd did a great goob on the hat and I highly recomend him for a HJ or other gear.

Regarding the sizing issue with HJ...I had asked Langpuss about this a couple of months ago in a pm...he responded that he had found the HJ's to run a bit on the small side. I find this to be true, as well. My headsize is right between 7 3/8 and 7 1/2 and most 7 1/2's are a bit large on me -- the HJ I received from Todd fits perfectly, so to me, anyway, that would suggest that the sizing is running a bit small. Or...I got lucky?! W>
