Yes it's much softer compared to when I received it

I agree with Erri. The brim is initially stiff as a cardbox, and it almost cracks when you try to mond it. But the felt will soon break, and it will become wind floppy, be sure!

In the mean time I just kinda...popped the curl upside-down...it now has less of a curl and looks a lot flatter.

After my reblock, the hat became stiff. What I did was put the hat on my bed upside down and got my hugo boss cologne bottle (which was a spherical shape) and rolled it in the inside of the hat until it became floppy again. I pretty much have to do that after every time it gets wet... It comes out very nice and soft after.

My brim is still stiff...im molding 24/7 to look like a raiders fedora lol

Yup. The inside of the crown. I also use it on the brim. You could also probably use the bottom of a bottle to do this. Really mash the felt with the bottle and swirl it around.

No I just pulled down the stiffy brim on the back when I first bashed the hat. It should hold by itself, mine does

I'm about to order myself an adventurer, got a couple of questions since I don't want to spend too much time backtracking in the thread [got too much class work to finish [ summer courses ]]:

- After I order, who do I e-mail for the custom options? What options [brim, and crown alike] in regards to measurements / brim dimensional cut did you get [or rather, specify to the company] that allowed for a great Raiders style?

- Which color matches best for the adventure hat? Looking at some of the choices, I thought instead of guessing and #### that up, I'd ask.

- Do you think they are willing to put the ribbon/bow from their "fedora" model on the hat instead of what they do by default for the adventurer? It looks a lot better than the Adventurer's current ribbon, IMO.

If you're ordering from Hornets, email Hornets. You can specify brim width, crown height, and ribbon (but that is subject to what they have in stock)

Thanks Tremolo. I like to think I went for the Raiders bash on the crown; the brim I'm not to sure. I just want the classic front brim snapped down and the sides and back straight flat (which i'm still trying to do). As for the thickness...I hope Christy's makes each of their Adventurers the same... I wouldn't know if others are thicker or thinner.

And yes...they did use brown stitching...they should have color matched it!

This is the side profile. As you can see its curled downwards; I snapped the brim downwards all around...kinda don't like the upward 'flick' at the back. And yes It actually snaps down...The brim almost feels like soft cardboard when I got it outta the box...it's slowly getting softer. Again, I'm aiming for a nice flat brim on the side and back. By they way, you guys remember how the brim felt outta the box right? Just wondering if I have a mutated Adventurer lol.

That one looks really nice! The back view looks good as well, even if it could be a bit lower (at least looking from this angle).

I've heard of the ironing technique before...
Did you place the wet canvas on the back brim and iron it? (with the iron only making contact with the wet canvas)...

I know the question wasn´t for me, but that´s how you should do it. If you iron the felt without the wet canvas it will leave heat markings, which won´t look very Raiders

I'm thinking you could use that. But make sure it isn't too thin as it can still leave heat marks if the fabric is too thin. I used my daughter's "nappie" (I dunno what it's really called, it's those white cloth that used to be used as diapers when disposables weren't available) as a barrier between the iron and felt when I reblocked my hat and needed to get rid of all the "wonky"-ness in the brim after pulling on it to stretch it over the block.

Yep, that should work as long as it´s wet and not too thin.

I've been thinking of actually sewing some fleece to the canvas to make it more like real millinery cloth - anyone ever try this?

I got my first Indy hat today! I am currently working with the bash to get it to stay perfect. Its a second hand Christys from ebay, only cost me £30 so a bargain, and great for a first!!!

I went straight to my Mrs's makeup kit to put some dirt and bash definition into it, as we all know a clean Indiana Jones fedora is not an Indiana jones fedora!

I just brought the Christy's to Boracay (a famous beach here in our country) and I must say I think I beat the life out of it... It has never been more noticeably tapered than ever before. The heat of the sun and constantly using it as a fan must have really done a number on the hat. It looks like a tapered SOC hat now... Well, still not as tapered as I've seen on the other thread, but pretty close I think.

Funny thing about being at the beach was seeing sooooooooooo many hats being worn... people all want to keep the sun out of their faces. I must be the only one there wearing a fur-felt hat, though. The rest wear the local straw hats being sold in souvenir shops made of 'abaca'. I just hope it's like that in the city... of course, at the beach you can get away with wearing almost anything (or not wearing anything at all).

yeah I know where boracay is...and yeah i would imagine that if you wear your fedora all day under the sun...it will shrink! Because think of it...when you're wearing the hat, theres a cusion of air between the top of your hat and your head...that air becomes so muggy and hot it'll shrink it for sure~

Well, I stretched it over my home-made block again and it seems fine again.

I'll probably do a real reblock next time by removing the sweatband and stuff to fully refurbish the hat.

Also, if you ask Christy's when you place an order, they will make the back of the brim less curled, just FYI.

Things you might be interested in tweaking with a new order:

*lower unbashed crown, at either 5 1/4" or 5 1/2" for Raiders, depending
*brim dimensions to your liking (comes with 3" front to back)
*ribbon tacked to the brim break, if so inclined
*the back curl dilema. A good flange will usually do it.

Something weird has happened to my Christy's... It became stiff as a board!

I haven't worn it for 5 days and when I was fitting the hat this evening, I noticed that the hat had become really stiff.

Could this be caused by some sea spray coming in contact with the hat? I was at the beach a week ago for 4 days. I never got the hat wet during the time, probably just some light sea spray while taking a boat ride, but nothing that really wet the hat. Will a misting or spray of salt water make the hat stiff?

Yeah I should have asked them to 'minimize' the curl on the back part of the brim. I actually kinda reduced it myself. I didn't use a flange...but I did use an iron...I put a cloth t-shirt of my hat and steamed it with the iron. It actually worked! I didnt get the whole curl out, but it has been reduced.

I'm guessing that too... but when I mentioned "light sea spray" I did mean light. Like one spritz from an atomizer bottle at about a foot away. That's the closest my hat got to getting wet during that whole 4-day vacation.

You wouldn't believe the things my Christy's went through at the hands of kids (plus my wife and our baby). They'd throw it around, bashing the back of the hat to look like the front, drool on it (baby), bite it (baby), step on it (baby), and sit on it (wife and baby). Aaahhh, yes... the fascination kids have with other people's hats......

My Christy's is now retired to a life of shelf display and probably costuming as I've distressed her already to look more Indy-ish. I sometimes put it on when I go down to look at my Indy shelf.

Yeah, I totally understand what your saying, Fenris. I was at a summer camp teaching kids in that photo...and dude...I was scared for my hat...But actually it wasn't all that bad. I let some of the kids take it and wear it. Of course it was thrown at various speeds and distances, and held improperly (therefore causing weird bashing). But over all, I think other than people calling me a cowboy (which isn't that bad...I don't mind it), it was a good way of naturaly 'wearing out' my fedora.

P.S. Don't get any milk on your hat or something...I don't think It'll stain too good hahaha
