New pic today
When I was bashing it yesterday I kept looking at it from the side and thinking why the heck is the front so straight up and down? Where is the classic slant I always see.. but it's only from when seen from an angle

I'll watch the DC scenes of Raiders this weekend and maybe tweak the bash. To get a sharper pinch (if I want it) should I steam it and maybe use clothes pins?
It's sooo comfortable, but darn ...
am I really
that old?
is that really your Carbon Grey hat? i probably going to be hanged for mentioning this but: your hat looks brown in that picture if my eyes dont trick me. if it really is your carbon grey, then i was right. the grey hat indy wore is Carbon grey, not "closer to moonstone" as some say. here is the proof. the carbon grey "changes" color depending on the lightning.
(man did i really say this, HERE?? maybe i should hire a bodyguard
)
by the way, that's a sweet hat lpa53. suits you well.

Finally, I'm gonna be part of the thread.
I want to read your opinions about my bash. I'm trying to get a crystal skull bash, I believe.

I concur.
If you're going for an exact match to the
Crystal Skull bash, IMO the lowest part of the side dents should end just above the ribbon. Also, the side dents should extend more towards the rear of the crown, a bit past the center of the bow.
However--if you're simply trying to achieve a bash that's similar to the Crystal Skull bash and looks good, I think you've succeeded! Me, I like your bash the way it is.

Here's mine so far - just arrived yesterday, so I haven't had much time to do much with it:
The sides were a bit too deep, so I worked on that just a bit after I took this picture. I think the look I'm going for is CS. Somewhat, at least. Maybe make it my own look just a bit as well. Gotta work on the front of the brim some more, too.

I'm SO happy with this hat
It's perfect
It was only $70 something plus shipping for a total of like $99..
I can't honestly imagine how one more expensive could be better except teeny tiny minor details.
I think I'll buy a Magnoli HJ in the future but purely as a collectable.
When I look in the mirror I can see a tiny tiny bit of discoloration where I put water on the brim and it gives it a PERFECT distressed but still new look.

Congrats on getting your hat finally, blueoakleyz! Looks great! I, too, love Last Crusade, and got this hat to be my "Last Crusade Hat." It works pretty well, I think, but I am noticing more that the crown on these Feds is actually better suited to a Raiders hat than an LC - it's too tall. The experts on here can set me straight if I'm wrong, I'm sure, but I think it needs at least about a quarter inch off the top to be a perfect SA LC hat. Well, the color isn't perfect, either, but after some sun and maybe dirt and wear, it'll lighten up to a close-to-perfect color, I think. But for the price, this is fantastic! I spent more than this on my old Stetson back in 1990 (when the $ was worth a lot more!) and my new Fed is about equal in quality to that - and an almost perfect Indy Hat to boot!
Aside : lest anyone who's seen Stetson's horrible quality in later years think I'm insulting Akubra - my Stetson is actually a pretty good quality hat. The felt is very thin and soft, and no discoloration or worn spots on it despite heavy use and inclement weather for 18 years. It does have a lot of taper, but it's hard to tell if that is more than usual because it
came with a lot of taper!

Okay, guys, I finally got a chance to play with my new Fed IV today. Here's my very first bash
ever. Please help! I think I'm attempting a Raiders bash. I'm having a little bit of a problem with the pinch in the front. Also, it seems taller and more "bulbous" on the left side on top. I can't seem to fix that. Any ideas of what I need to do? Thanks, all!

That's actually what I followed to try for the Raiders look, but it's not quite "there" yet. Any suggestions are welcomed. For instance, what exactly does "turning" mean? I've read it on several tutorial sites, but they don't explain it -- so the brim look a bit odd, too.

Twilekjedi, Turning the hat is when you put on your hat before bashing and turn it a little (with the bow moving more to the front) to get that distinktive swoop you see in Raiders. Once you see the amount of swoop you like, mark where you would have your center dent before taking it off. Now you have an off-center center dent and you bash the hat using that.
So, basically turning your hat just means bashing it off-center to get the brim to swoop like it did in Raiders.
Regards, Geert

Well I got mine today and it arrived in the box that I think may have been beat up by customs. It had the kicked look but I noticed that it had been pierced by something just about the size of a pencil or sniffer tube. My friend who was on hand for the arrival was the one to come up with the idea...who knows.
Upon opening the box the hat seems to have made it generally unscathed. Just a few minor spots as evidence that it came as far as it did. When first tried on it was large but after one foam strip and 15 minutes it is already fitting much better. Though I am already sure that I will keep this hat there are a few nit picks which I have. The first thing I noticed was that the ribbon was sitting up off of the brim and that the brake was uneven around the hat. I have noted that it seems common in the pictures here that the break is slow instead of an abrupt 90 degree angle. Another thing was that when I looked inside or at the underside of the hat the liner, sweat band and brim do not line up. Imagine if you will 3 ovals all turned a bit off from each other the brim also is not square with the sweatband and so the widest point is not were you would expect it to be. I know some may think I'm being super picky but I have been a jeweler fro 20 years and I am picker with my things. I also didn't have to look hard at all to see any of this....of course in pictures it is harder to see. Anyway these things should just add character to the piece and considering the demand/cost/manufacturing technique I am not griping just pointing out a few things... ;-)
btw, Can anyone assist me in what would be the best way to get rid of the bend in the ribbon? It's just bugging me..

Yeesh, that's some gash in that box! What, did they drop-kick your package to your door? Glad your hat survived that. That was pretty quick shipping, though, if you ordered on the 3rd -- was it express? I'm sure it'll look handsome after you bash it. I'm just glad the mail service didn't bash it for you!

Let's see I received the confirmation to my order at 11:53pm Sunday 11/02 and the hat arrived at approx. 3:30 pm Monday 11/10. So, without figuring out all the change of time and date stuff 5 shipping days more or less. That was regular air shipping to Wisconsin....lucky me. Boy was I worried when I first saw the box though, but everything was fine inside. The punctured spot on top of the box was done by something rather thin. You can see two parallel scape marks and one broke through the cardboard. There is another hole where the box was pierced by something the same size right above the H on the side of the box. So, it traveled quickly to it's destination the box took the damage and I'm ready to figure out how I am going to bash it.
And if it doesn't shrink enough I will steam it down to size...

A hat that has already been creased can be harder to reshape and the new bash may not look as "crisp" as the original one you put in. Whether or not you want the turn depends on which scene from Raiders you want to replicate; some hats had the feature, and others didn't. Also, some people care about the turn and others don't. In my opinion, your hat looks just right on you the way it is now.

Thanks, Jack! Yup, I've already found out about the "less 'crisp'" thing. And I agree, I think it looked better the first time around. Anyway, it became a bit too tight around my head with enough turn to make the brim swoosh. So it's currently just
slightly off center. But I will say this: it was more fun bashing it the second time around. I guess because I wasn't as afraid to do so. I can see why so many guys here have multiple fedoras!

Well, my hat arrived on Monday. The box had some minor damage to it, but the hat was fine. The only problem is it's a bit too large on me, even with the foam tape it's still just a tad too loose for my liking. I'm not sure if I'm going to send it back or try to sell it in the bazaar.
I've emailed hatsdirect asking for return instructions, just waiting to hear back from them. At that point I'll decide what to do. I've already went ahead and ordered a size smaller from them today(size 58 ). I will say the hat did get here quickly, ordered it on Sunday the 2nd and it arrived here on the 10th.

Here is my new Fed IV Dlx. It fits me perfectly, but this is the second try. The first one was a size 60, but was way too big. This one fits perfect and is my regular size of 59. Originally I tried to order a 59, but they told me that these hats run abit undersize and a 60 would fit me better, so now I have to send the 60 back. Oh well. I have about 5-6 hours of wear on the 59 and it is very comfortable now.
I bashed it with a slight turn to the right, then I lightly misted it with water when I got it just right. Now it's solid.
The photos are a bit washed out from the sun. I didn't take the time to correct the color balance so just keep in mind that the felt is somewhat darker than it appears. It's a very sunny day here in Florida today, 81 deg F at my house.

I came up with 59, but I was advised to go with 60 so that's what I ordered. Most people should go with the suggestion of Hatsdirect. It just so happened that it didn't work for me. Perhaps I didn't measure correctly. I don't know.
I'm pretty happy with the bash right now, but are there any experts out there with any suggestions?

Well, my hat finally came from Austrailia from hats direct, great service by the way, and checked that it fit before I exiled it away to the back of my girlfriends closet, where it will stay until Christmas. I too received a new standard Fed IV the other day.
Here it is straight out of the box.
The next two pics are post-bash, going for a CS-inspired look. I did not turn the hat and used a bit of steam to get the brim swoop. I don't know what caused the little divot at the back of the crown (it was there when I received the hat); a shot of steam couldn't get rid of it. I think I can live with it.

You might try dampening the felt a bit and supporting the felt from the backside in the position that you want it. I was able to get a little wobble out of my hat by doing that. When the felt dried it maintained the shape that it dried in.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try misting it with a bit of water (or steam) and adding support to hold the shape until fully dry.
EDIT: I tried the suggestion earlier and it works!
I dabbed on some water with my fingers, then worked the divot from the inside and stuffed the crown with tissue paper to hold the shape while the hat dried. The spot is still there but is much less noticeable now. Thanks, Cammer! Simple solutions are always the best.
