ordering question:

by cehnot
What sizes are available to order for The Henry?
I usually buy 7 1/4 US size hats and I was wondering if this may be close to the new factory hat size. When I got my Peter Brothers Custom Raiders hat this last year I found that the hat fit until after I went in the rain. Since shrinkage occurred and I ashamed to admit it, the hat has a strong taper.
I love the price for the factory hat and I want to buy one this weekend through Paypal, but I would like to have some reassurance about sizes, or whether I should go with 1 size bigger in case of future shrinkage.
Thanks

Hey chenot,
the first prototype was left for three days in the car by me, to see what happens (as - usually - this is something you SHOULDN'T do to a hat). The felt came out fine but the sweat hat shrunk a little. So I told the hatter that he needs to pre-shrink the leather, which is what he's doing now. Though it's not roo hide, I doubt that it would shrink too much when worn in the rain.
Oh, all sizes available.
Regards,
Marc

You know I've been interested in this project from the moment it was announced and I think the hat looks fantastic. I really hope I can figure out a way to come up with some money soon so I can take advantage of the discounted price. Even IF I can't it's still a great price for the hat.
I'd like to see a sizing chart as well.
I'm guessing you'll be ordering this thinner felt before any "customer hats" are made, correct? How "thick" is the prototype and will having a thinner felt help style the hat easier? If so then how will this effect it's durability in the long run?
Sorry, I'm still totally clueless when it comes to this stuff.
Posted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 1:35 pm
by Marc
Regarding the felt thickness, we're talking 0.3mm here which is next to nothing. The felt is butter soft and very easy to crease right out of the box, no steam, even with this felt. As for durability, this small amount of thickness will hardly have any influence. I just want the same thickness as Steve and I are using. However - due to our extensive pouncing - we take off a little more felt and that is the entire difference.
The SLIGHTLY thinner felt will be on all customer's hats, yes.
As for sizing, they'll come in all standard sizes i.e.: 7 1/8, 7 1/4, 7 3/8 or in cm: 57, 58, 59 etc. etc.
The felt has water repellent added to it at the factory and is pounced to have a very soft and smooth surface.
Regards,
Marc
thanks

Hey Marc,
Is the Henry felt getting the pre-aging treatment, or is that remaining a hand-made exclusive?
Regards,
Brian
Posted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 2:12 pm
by Marc
The pre-aging treatment is EXTREMELY time consuming and as such it'll remain an exclusive for the handmade hats from Steve and me.

Marc

A quick question about sizes...are you able to offer smaller sizes than 57, like 54 or 55?
I am in awe, the hat looks amazing!

Ummm.... yeah, I don't see why we shouldn't be able to offer smaller sizes...

I'm not an expert in hats or anything Marc, but this hat looks GREAT!!
What I really like is that you aren't settling with a few mm off, but wants to get everything just right, the attention to detail is fantastic!
Hats off to you!
And hats on.. our heads
And btw, it's really a nice member-price your offering! Thanks
Expect to get a payment from me.. as soon as I get enough capital

This looks beautiful, but I have a question:
The brim on the sides and back looks quite flat. Are they going to come curled at all, or is that something each individual owner will have to put in?
Posted: Thu Jun 19, 2008 9:57 am

I'd be glad to request a little more curl to the brim

Marc,
Another question about sizing. Will they be standard oval or will you be offering long oval for those of us with alien heads as well?
Thank you so much for your offering here and sharing of the prototype images. That hat looks fantastic!!
Cheers!

Marc,
In the Vendor section, you say something about this operation requiring you to utilize your spare time. Are you just referring to all the set-up, or is there some part for you to play once the hat is finalized and orders are being filled?

Wow! Thanks, Mark!
I'm no Indy hat specialist but I do like a nice curl to the sides and rear of a fedora, and to my eye, Indy hats seem to have them.
Well...now it looks like I gotta buy another hat!
My wife will be thrilled, I'm sure.

Marc.....
Great looking hat!!! I hope you didn't have them put too much curl in the brim. I've always felt that the original ROTLA hat had very little curl to the back of the brim, but that's just me. But, let me get this straight. Is this the same bash, and basically hat, as the AB hat I received recently with a KofCS bash? I really want a "Henry", but not if it's the same hat.
Many Thanks
Randoman

If I remember correctly they come open crowned and you bash it yourself. I could be wrong there though. The only aspect that matches the Raiders hat is the blocking which gives it its distinctive straight sides. Am I right about this Marc?
Cheers!

These come in reg. oval only - as this is what the old block design is. However - being a long oval myself - I don't have any problems with that, so I don't think other people will. It just adds more pull to the front and back, which again gives a better reverse taper
Regarding my time... you all know that I'm not in the position to be a fulltime hatter and therefore I'm so far behind on the AB-Dlx.
So in order to not make it worse, I'm currently only taking Paypal orders, as this is easiest to handle.
The hatter DOES have one of our hats at his place for reference, so they'll know not to curl the brim too much.
Yes, Dan. The Henry comes open crown. The Henry is accurate to the Raiders Fedora in terms of felt thickness and color (perhaps a NOTCH darker so it'll fade into the perfect match), ribbon, block and specs. PLUS: the reeding tape and the leather of the sweatband look IDENTICAL to the ones on my vintage HJs
I believe this to be EXTREMELY close to the real deal, except this ones got 20% beaver and costs less than an HJ

Marc

How long does the whole (purchase to receiving) process take for the Henry?
Would they likely ship out by August if we order this week?
I was reading on CNN that the American Dollar may go down in value end of summer, so buy your hat soon.
If anybody is having a hard time doing currency exchange rates for their hat, I suggest using

So I took the plunge.
I ordered. YES! I DID!
I can't really afford it, but I know it's worth it and i'd be sorry later if I didn't.

Looks good for a factory hat Marc. I like the idea that the hat is 20 per cent beaver. I mean, it really is 20 per cent beaver. I think that is how hatters ought to advertise their hats, by beaver content as the X system is meaningless today. A 10x hat can actually have NO beaver fur at all in it. This AB factory hat is actually a true 20x hat, or 2x if you were back in the old days. Looks to be a good, soft hat. I think I would tell the ribbon installer to just put a fold in the bow and not try to coax a flying v out of it. If the fold is put in correctly, like you see on some of the older Christy hats, it will morp on its own into a flying v. But overall, this hat looks really good. Kudos my friend. A question. Have you caused the factory hatter to pull all of his hair out yet?
I can just hear their conversation now. "That nitpicky guy from Germany is on the phone again about that hat. Should I just tell him you are gone for the day???

I took the hit as well. I am even moving in a new apartment with my girlfriend this week and figured that it was cheaper to do so now than later. Since I bought it now, I do not need to have her badger me about it!

Groovy! Thanks Marc! That's good to hear about the oval of the hat. That should give the perfect SOC look for those of us with long oval alien heads.

CS block or Raiders block? The thread title is a little misleading as the factory hat is not using the CS block.....definitely a nice looking hat for a Raiders hat and i love that turnaround time

Just a short update on how the second prototype performs:
I've been wearing it all Saturday, while working on the roof for the new hat shop in the hot sun. The hat was SOAKED in sweat after 10 hours and when we were done with working, I just threw it on a chair together with my clothes, took a long shower and forgot about it until the next day. I grapped the hat to check for shrinkage ect. and it's been doing TREMENDOUSLY well. It fit exactly as the day before and except for the saw dust etc. I coudn't tell any differences
So I'm happily looking forward for using it next Saturday again

Marc

Will The Henry have the Adventurebilt logo on the liner and if so which logo?
And as far as bashing goes, did I miss a sticky post on bashing your hat to screen match Raiders? I've got a Miller that I've re-bashed but someone who's more of a pro should prob. post a tutorial if it hasn't been done already.

That will be a really dumb question for most of you, but I hope you'll forgive me for asking it anyway (I'm new here after all...): How do I order one of those?!?
I know payment is via paypal but where/how do I order in the first place? And: The "turnaround time" mentioned above, is that how long I have to wait until I hold it in my hands...? Thanks for not beating me...
