I realized today, that I was trying to make my Christies SA, but not to any Indy film. While staring in the mirror, I realized I wanted my hat to be SA to Erri's.

I'm an admirer of Magnoli but not yet a customer. I've learned, I hope, over the years to appreciate smaller and traditional suppliers. They are few and far between in the UK, but they are there. Am I allowed to say the names on the forum?

Where does one buy a Christy's Ad these days? I googled them and got a lot of threads like this but no suppliers.

Just to throw a small spanner in the works.

Has anyone managed to get them to make a hat with more volume in the crown? I have one and it looks fantastic on it's own.

Once I put it on it looks totally tapered and a bit too tall! I have a big round oriental head and it just looks weird even though I have the right size!

Mmmh, that would be nice to have a fuller crowned Adventurer, but wouldn´t that mean they had to use a different block? Maybe it would be best to ask them or Hornets directly if a fuller crown is available.

That was exactly the same impression I had when I took my first Adventurer out of the box and looked into the mirror and compared it to my fuller crowned FedIV.

Maybe you could order a size bigger and shrink the sweatband down to your size? That way you would have a slightly fuller crown and the hat would probably even have some reverse taper.

I ordered all my Adventurers with different brim dimensions and it never was a problem and since the crown heights seem to vary between 5 1/2" and 5 3/4" I don´t think it would be a problem to order the hat with a 5 1/4" crown or something like that.

By the way when the question came up if they could make the Adventurer with a thicker, more durable felt, like the Magnoli HJ now, they answered that the felt they currently use is the only option.

i too asked about felt change in the christys'.
they said that they don't have any plans at present to change their felt.

dont the hats that are 5 1/2 or less tend to have more taper in them?

even if this is true i still hope my christys' is
closer to 5 1/2", but a 5 3/4" will do okay too especially
coming from a 6" peters bros.

This hat has a 5 3/4" high crown and the brim dimensions are 2.75" front/back and 2.5" sides.
After wearing it daily for over a half year it looked like this:

As you see there is quite a bit of crown distortion going on. But it became super floppy, when I took this picture the brim was constantly "punching" my face

On a side note, this one here has a 5.5" crown and the brim dimensions are 3" front/back and 2.5" sides.

When comparing both hats, I really prefer the 5.5" crown. But as usual it really depends on your head and face shape, I know I couldn´t wear a 6 inch high hat

Keep in mind i'm not reblocking it. From what i've seen the hat can't take it.

Since the hat is dry blocked, this is kinda a 'dry reblock'... kinda. Mostly I just want to use it as a hat stand that keeps the hats shape.

wow both your hats have really nice bashes. you are a lucky one, both
your christys' are very straight sided, one even with reverse taper, and
even with a taller crown the sable one still looks super SA.

When you get yours take your time and work with the hat, look at a lot of screengrabs and bash it with patience.

It will shrink up really fast. You would need to start out with a body much larger than your actual size so as to end up at the right brim width and crown height. My Christy's now looks like a trillby after reblocking it.

you know i kinda think christys' did change to the thicker felt and
maybe just didn't wanna say because boy is mine kinda thick.
when i got it it wasn't card board stiff but i could tell it was a heavier hat
then my PB. plus i compared the thickness of both hats by looking at the ends
of the brim.

just thought i would put this out there.

The Christy's felt, I have on my Adventurer is quite noticeably thicker than that of my Fed IV. I'm not really sure that's indicative of them switching felts.

Cool - your hat looks good; you've really pulled off a good Raiders.

My Christy's arrived yesterday and I've bashed it in a Raiders style. (pictures forthcoming) I have a huge melon (7 5/8//61) and the hat is a little bit big, but overall I love it. It took alot of kanoodling with the brim and pouring over COW and watching Raiders to get what I wanted, but I like it. The crown still needs work. When I get home I'll update w/ pics.

I got really jealous of thecoolmeister's bash, so I rebashed my own Christy's....pics forthcoming.

Here's my Christy's,re-blocked(on hat-shaper),with ribbon change,and LC bash.

I love the Sable colour and how light and comfortable it is to wear(it's softening-up nicely to! )

That looks really nice! Could you post some more pictures? I wondered about a hat shaper myself for quite some time. Did you buy the straight sided dome?

Yes,I used the straight-sided Dome-worked well with the Christys..I'll try and grab some pics of it on my head.

What an awesome thread - so many great hats! Fedoraraiders and Holt's recent achievements have enthused me to give another hat a go, but as the Akubras (including the one I have) aren't quite the right colour, I'm thinking of giving the Christies a shot.

So a few questions for those of you who are clearly more talented at this than I given the qualities of this hat and its potential for s h r i n k a g e.
My head is about 57.5cm, and I'm figuring in theory I should order a 58. But I want that reverse taper / SOC look! I'm thinking of ordering bigger again and wetting the whole band / brim down and maybe even hitting it with a hair dryer a tad, among other abuses. I'm wondering if the whole "buy large and shrink to combat taper" principle I've read about this and the HJ will work well in this way? I'm guess I'm asking whether this can be achieved without me essentially reblocking one smaller. Any thoughts?

Also, I'm torn on the whole Sable vs. Light Sable vs. Cork thing. My Akubra's overly drab colour is a bit ho-hum for my tastes, and doesn't really nail the slight caramelly look I see in the hat sometimes, esp. in the Screenused hat. But I'm concerned if I go Cork, that it will be going too far the other way. What are the thoughts of those of you who have one vs. another?

It's really hard to decide about the colour. However, I have a Christy in Sable and plenty of ABs, I can say that the sable is rather close to the AB colour. If you like the AB colour you might enjoy the sable.
The cork is also interesting but I've never seen one so I don't really know how "red" actually is in real life. It might actually be close to the ABD colour but that's just a wild guest.

As for shrinkage, if you plan on shrinking it or try to achieve a reverse taper I definitely suggest you to go for a larger hat and the shrink the sweat band area. I would avoid any reblock unless you are familiar with the proces and you have a proper block (no kitchenware)

Ok, so to go larger, but how large? If I'm 57.5, how much bigger would you suggest?

I've got no preference re the AB colour. I'd just prefer something that is the most consistent with the way the hat appears in Raiders (not necessarily the way the hats actually were). Of course, I know that opens a can of worms (at least 3 colours seem to look right to me depending on the scene /lighting), so that's where I'd love some opinions. I mean, Cork seems to nail the SOC look ...or can the Sables do it just as well? etc.
