Now, that's odd you say that. I took to whip-cracking pretty easily, and no sore muscles.

Two thoughts: I probably haven't done it enough to REALLY work the muscles, or maybe it's only some of the harder cracks that cause that. The other thought is I perhaps I already do use these muscles - I've been doing a LOT of yoga lately.

No, really, I do, and it's the upper-body series of the Sun Salutations sequence (downward-facing dog, plank, crocodile, upward-facing dog, repeat) that really works the shoulders, traps, triceps, and delts...but go ahead, jump all over that one...I know I've got it coming to me...

EDIT: As an afterthought, for anybody w/ soreness from whipcracking...try yoga?

I'm glad you got your whip. Yes, it's on the heavy side. My idea with making the whips heavier is that they will be easier to crack for a beginner, since you won't have to move your hand as fast to accelerate the cracker.

I also think that there is still a mind set that if something is heavy it must be expensive. I personally like the heft of the IOAB bullwhip.

I don't do yoga, but when I go cracking I practice until my arms are tired, which takes 15 minutes to an hour depending on which whip I'm cracking and whether I'm practicing accuracy or cracking routines. Maybe I should start yoga and see if my cracking gets better.

Jerry R. suggested that I try making the whips lighter. I think the best way to make them lighter would be to stop using shot for the core and start using a braided core and bolster, but that would mean more leather and time, so it would make for a more expensive whip.

Rick, also remember that I do make a full line of whips that can be seen on my website and in some of my postings here on the forum. You don't necessarily have to go to another whipmaker to get the whip that you want. You can go back to the whipmaker who sold you your first one

Indeed it is easier to crack. I read somewhere that if the weight is carried down the thong, the popper pops easier and louder, which is good to shw off with when you're in costume

Yep, I know! I figure from here though, there are so many options that I'd have to look at all of them, your other whips included!

I don't necessarily have a problem with it being heavier, especially since I've never had another whip to compare it to. But I did get a chance to try it out last night! Since we don't have a yard at home (or a good enough space to swing it around) I took it out into the middle of the campus I work at before going home for the day. There's much I need to learn about form and HOW to crack the thing, but I've been looking at some of the basic tutorials folks have posted around here. I stuck with the forward overhead (I think that's what it's called) and actually managed to get a couple of small cracks out of it! I even hit my back and the back of my legs a couple of times. Still, I think this is gonna be a fun hobby.

Any pointers on starting out?

Where your MKVII and put it over your thigh, it's saved my leg a lot of times! Umm....you're talking about the circus crack right? Well coming from another beginner, I think that if I waited longer for it to go past my head when I brought it up, the more accurate the crack was. I don't know...don't listen to me. I'm going to watch return of the jedi now....

EDIT: And look for all the free videos/movies you can...I got a lot just out of SEEING it being done. I'm sure you already know a LOT of threads have pointer to such stuff...seeing it was so much easier for me than understanding instructions.

It's also good to start out with a heavier whip as you'll build those muscles up faster, and if/when you go to a no-shot kangaroo, you'll be able to crack the bloody thing all day.

I've got a 6' "Ugly Duckling" by RacerX, which is an 8 plait cowhide whip, and I love it. It's a tad heavy, (not as heavy as the Budget Indy's, but then, it's got a thong 2' shorter, and isn't shot loaded. Well balanced, quick, and easy to crack though.)

I've since cracked a 6' bull from Paul Nolan, and two 8' Joe Strain Whips, (courtesy of Paul Nolan's collection!) and it was like the last 2 foot of whip wasn't even there. They floated. Once I got used to the weight difference, I could have worked with them all day.

FYI Adam, my order of "several" should be in the mail tomorrow or Thursday. ;-)

I got my whip today! What can I say? It's beautiful! I'm amazed everytime I see a whip on a picture, but to actually hold one in my very own hands makes me realize what great skill and talanted handcrafting it takes to complete one. Compared to the one other whip that I've looked at in real life, that being SJ's roo hide whip, it's on the heavier side. I like that though and it really seems to be of great quality that will last a long time.

I'll post some pics in another thread later, just wanted to let you know that I'm 100% happy with my very first whip.

Congrats to all who got a whip from Adam. I think this pushed alot of us into getting our first whip. It was the first piece i wanted but i ended up getting alot before it. But I could'nt pass this up so i too will be getting my first Indy bullwhip.Thank you Adam once again for bringing this bullwhip out, looking forward to getting it.Though i still want that 10 footer eventually.. atleast i can learn first now with a great starter whip.

I think this was a once in a lifetime oppurtunity for me, because the whip has always been a lesser part of my outfit, as I knew I wouldn't be using it EVERY DAY, like my fedora or jacket. It's just not practical to have a whip hanging off your belt at school.
But with the price to quality ratio in the Budget whip, it was hard to pass up. It's cheaper than the Keppler AND it comes in the right color! I think this is the perfect whip for people who don't know if whip-cracking is going to be their thing yet, but want to start on something miles ahead of a swivel handle, and have it look good on their belt. Of course the price might change, so I just made sure I got mine ASAP.

Yeah, I already have a whip, but mine is a wooden-handled one I got on e### for $10...I figured I'd NEVER be able to afford a whip w/ an Indy-like handle, much less with this apparent quality for this price...

I'm also going to in Tulsa, Oklahoma, next weekend for the world's largest gunshow. I'm planning on making a fancy bullwhip to show around. Maybe some of you gear heads will be there. I might be able to set some of my stuff at a booth a friend of mine will have, otherwise I'll just be walking around trying to trade off some whips and a couple of bowie knives.

That's exactly right. This whip finally made it possible for me to get my first whip a lot sooner than I thought I would. I'm very happy with it!

You nailed it. I had thought that the only whip I'd be able to afford for a long time was the Keppler whip, but I never bothered because it just didin't look right. The color was wrong and I didn't like the look of the "unfinished side" of the leather peaking out of the weave. I know several people who say that the Keppler whip is actually a decent starter whip, but it just looks cheap to me. I couldn't do it. But Adam's whip made my eyes bug out! Even though I got one of the prototypes a tad cheaper than he's currently selling them for, it's still well worth the money even if he eventually offers them at the same price as the Keppler! It's a much nicer looking whip (by far) and (from what I can tell) is a much better whip than the Keppler. You can't go wrong if you're looking for a good starter whip!
