Guys, guys, it's my FIRST Indy jacket, relax. There's bound to be a learning curve, I'm Ok with that. In fact, I expect it. All I can say is I think the jacket will work better (on me) if it's a little too long (and seriously, we're talking ONE inch here!) than too short. Worst case scenario it's a bit long and I'll live with it. I'll know better next time.

OR

It could turn out to be perfect for me...

Either way, not a big deal. But I do feel the long coat thing is a bit overboard... just sayin'.
Peace.

OR....a little bit of both worlds.
Where the pockets and collar dimensions must be proportional adjusted.

With a 45" chest (at maximum inhaling, I pressume), and 6'4" height (weight is VERY important), if you are on the slim side, my suggestion would be:

* for SA look: size 44 w/25" back
* for a more everyday "wearable" fit: size 44 w/26" back

The next guy is 6'4" height - 47" chest - about 240 pounds

Jacket is a S&J (not Wested). Is a 48 size + 26" back + 25" front. Pockets and collar are proportional to this jacket sizing.
A little bit of both worlds.

Image
So last time I checked I was around 220 lbs (I used to be a 48" chest but that was at 275 lbs! I've slimmed down a lot). Yeah, it might be a tad on the long side, but it's not a huge deal for me. It may very well be for someone less, and I'm sure that other person would give other measurements... As for my measurement, it's not 45" at max inhaling, that would be closer to 47", 45" is at normal.
Cheers,

Franco

In that case I suggest to go with a size 46.
The 44 might be a little snug.

As you've said, it's your first jacket...you will love it!

Cheers.-

No, I was just kidding, since Franco was a little apprehensive about the dimensions. I was just having a little fun with it is all. Franco, if I did not feel you were in the ballpark, I would have told you from the start. I still think you are right in there. Relax, and wait for it to show up at your door. You have done the right thing. ;)

It's pretty hard to look screen accurate if you're significantly larger or smaller than HF in my view. Doesn't mean you can't look good. Harrison has a modest, slim build and his jacket hangs on him in a very specific way.

A burglar stepped in through an open window one night, and after looking around, trying to focus, heard a voice in the corner...."Jesus is watching you."

Huh, are you talking to me?

Yes, said the parrot. My name is Moses. I just thought I'd warn you.

Who in their right minds would name a parrot, 'Moses'?

The same ones that would name a 150 pound Rottweiler, Jesus!

Absolutely, most of us do. I have encountered people who complain about the accuracy of their jacket when they are five feet five and 230 pounds. It's odd that one. :TOH:

I just checked the UPS status and my Hero jacket in now in the very near vicinity, a mere 25 minutes away! Barring any major fubars, it should be here at some point in the next 12 hours or so... So excited! Thirty three years I've waited for this...

Pics soon guys!

Ok so the jacket is HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know I only have four pics left (yes I know I can also add links), so I will not use what I have available on opening the package pics, but will show the jacket on me. That said, I don't want to do selfies so I have to wait for someone to take pics of me wearing it.

Suffice it to say I love it! The goat is a great leather with a fine grain but a lovely texture that will age well I can tell. The sleeves are perfect (not TOO long) and while the back could also have worked and perhaps been more S-A with a TAD less, I like it this way so no foul in my book!

Thank you all for all your help and patience with my neurosis... I'm sure you can all relate ;-)

So sorry for not posting pics the very second I wore it, but I WILL post them as soon as I can.
Cheers all!

Keep in mind you'll lose some length as the leather settles on your body with wear, called 'ride up', so you may be glad you have the extra material.

Congratulations!

Thank you sir! I remember working an entire summer when I was a kid to save up enough money to buy a "good-enough" kind of jacket and how I loved that jacket, even if it was nowhere near Indy's, and I feel thee same way now! I waited not only 33 years for this, but more recently, a year and a half, during which time I worked hard at losing weight and after dropping 55 pounds or so, I just couldn't wait another year (because when you live in Canada, you don't just drop 400+ bucks in the middle of winter for something you're not going to wear for another few months...). It even has the same smell if you can believe it!

Right. Where are those Nazis?

Glad you got a winner! I was also tempted by the goat, but it wasn't a dark enough shade for me. In the end I went with a dark cowhide that Peter had a small batch of.

Oh I know, I would have preferred a darker goat, but I figure I can try to dye it myself with a darker shade of brown. I'll test it on a small inconspicuous area and see if it holds.

Why not sit with it for a few weeks first you may like it. The film jacket is not a dark brown either as you can see on Blueray.

The screen used jacket may have been authentic brown, but I've had authentic brown and I don't care for it. I prefer dark brown, I just thinks it makes for a nicer jacket - but that's just my preference.

Tundrarider wrote:Color, hue, shade...whatever one calls it, is the hardest thing to pin down due to lighting, lenses, filters, and editing.
Absolutely. That's why professional rack monitors are black and white, as everyone sees colors differently so color monitors are not much use. We use waveform monitors/vector scopes to determine correct video signal with color monitoring, but there is little disagreement on whether or not a picture is in focus, so 'old school' racks hold black and white sets. That's what I have on all my production cameras.

If you look at the various stills from Raiders, the jacket is tinted from "authentic brown" as Peter has noted-such as in the idol grab sequence, to almost black, as in the flying wing, truck chase, Tanis dig sequences. Certainly, the old school nature of the way this movie was filmed, lighting, etc., had something to do with it, but I also think that the method in which the hide was tanned, has something to do with the reasons why the jacket color looks different in different lighting. I think BK has reproduced this eccentricity quite successfully, and in theory, seems to point to the veg. tanned nature of the finished leather, about as much as the lighting, shadows and darkness of these scenes as they were filmed. In fact, some have commented on the chameleon color nature of the BK, not tricks of film or technique, but personal observations. There are several factors that seem to be working together to produce what is finally seen on screen and in video: dye/tanning, light/dark, method of film, with respect to contrasting color eccentricities from scene to scene. IMO. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :P

Comments like this always remind me of a friend who had a screen used hero version Star Trek movie costume. He wore it to a Con only to have other fans nit pick it apart for it's inaccuracies.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

As mentioned, wave forms and other post-prod equipment are needed to TRY and get a semblance of uniformity, and they do in as much as a video signal is concerned. But unless you have ALL the screen-used jackets in the SAME pic WITH a color chart in there, you really are just speculating about the actual color. Also let's not forget that weathering (natural and artificial) does change the color over time as well.

Another point, and this is a often overlooked one because we are all talking about S-A... is that some shades work better on some people than they do on others. For example, I know cool colors work very well on me (so the blacks, greys and blues) but the warmer ones (browns, tans and reds), not so much. So for me, it's a case of trying to bridge the gap between what works on ME and what I would LIKE to work well on me... Not the same thing.

Most people (yes even fans) have NO IDEA just how far removed the reality of what is used on a film is to their perception! Take mate paintings for example; they are or were in the old days of glass paintings, VERY crude paintings that would fail under any sort of scrutiny, but once on film, work very well. That's because there is such a thing as perception (what your eye THINKS it sees, it sees). Add to this the distance between the painting and the camera, the film grain, the editing, added action elements to the static painting, music and sound effects, and all of a sudden something that looks like it was hacked out in five minutes becomes (for a mere second or two) a very realistic image! Same thing with wardrobe.

That said I think I will sit on it for a bit, I may grow to like the brown, who knows?
Cheers,

Franco

Well stated, Franco.

The old rule of thumb is 'it doesn't necessarily need to be, it just has to APPEAR to be.'

Definitely give it some time. It may very well grow on you 'as is'.

Overly lit, perhaps, but I see that jacket colour in the movie too and you sense as you watch that the lighting often makes it look darker. The jacket from LC they had at the Smithsonian is a similar lighter brown. I like that colour. Raiders at the cinema used to look quite bright. Most of the prints we've seen in the last 20 years are dark.

The colour in that pic appears skewed a little yellow. I moved I back a little... perhaps a touch too magenta but I think more accurate. Colour is a weird beast.
