Dragging this 3 year old thread to the top again (as it's still a timely topic, no matter when it was posted), in researching another topic, I came across this item that may be of interest.

They make it in a 'smoke eliminate' product where you put one of the pouches and jacket into a plastic bag, close up and leave over night.
Apparently, from what I've read, it eliminates all unwanted odors with no chemicals involved (zero carbon footprint, they claim) the pouch can be reinvigorated by exposure to sun (natural ozone), and can be used again and again.
It's available through Amazon too.
I've never used it myself, but thought I'd toss that out there in case someone was looking for an alternative for a smoky smelling jacket or musty MKVII bag they wanted to 'fix'.

A bit vague in their descriptions, but looks and sounds like activated charcoal to me.
