that's a good thing. you cant having looking TOO thin otherwhise it will end up looking like a black wrinkly garbage bag I think

I wondered whether it's the same stuff that psycicsandswords (?) had his made from. I recall he tried distressing a small corner and found it was dyed all the way through.

And yes, the thin black gargabe bag isn't really the adventure look!

Not sure, I just picked "soft seal brown cowhide" from the dropdown box and left it at that. Don't know if it's the same thing or not. It was ridiculously soft but fairly thick, too (at least compared to the goat TOD that replaced it). But no, it didn't distress when I tried a little out of the way spot...

The soft seal cowhide is a different one, it's very soft and supple but quite thick, some I've seen has quite a pronounced cowhide grain to it.

Wested has a jacket in the clearance section called, "brown hide". What in the heck is that type of skin?

Resurrecting an old(er) thread here just to see if anyone can answer a Wested, hide-specific question for me: so the novapelle is a “dual tone” skin – so what colors have you noticed coming out in any worn/distressed areas? I’m primarily interested in the undertones of the dark brown novapelle – are they grayish or tan?

'Hide' would be cowhide.

Generally they refer to goat and lamb ie smaller animals as 'skin' and horse and cow ie. larger animals as 'hide', this seems to be an industry norm.

Dark brown has a greyish undercolour, if you want a warm tan I suggest you investigate copper novapelle or the worn look (cow) hide.

Thanks, KT. I am definitely starting to lean towards the worn hide look - yours is gorgeous. I still like the dark novapelle too, though.

Thanks Zoltar for the dark brown sample,it´s just what I´m after! The goat next to it look´s like cardboard.. If only I could compare those to a piece of authentic brown... Oh yes my jacket is made from it..scissors where are my scissors!!

One way to tell if the leather you are looking for has a warm undertone is to look at the reverse side.

This is the back and front of the copper novapelle (wornlook is similar except the top later is a bit darker:

Wested has begun to post leather samples on their web site, and sometimes the image does not quite appear as it does in real life, but its a good start. I was looking at this WWII repro. jacket and thought that this sheepskin would make a really good Indy jacket, less the wool, of course:

Grain adds character to the overall look, and if the film jacket was made of leather tanned in the rough, then it would seem that this sheepskin might be a good choice, if it was not too thick or heavy? Much of what has been done in the past was to give a new jacket the water treatment, in order to remove the shine and to expose the grain. What if it is already present in a skin such as this? Seems as though you get the best of both worlds, it is grainy like goat, but light and pliable as lamb/sheep. I think a few things need to happen. The skin should be veg. tanned in the rough, and the surface needs to look more natural in color and grain.
