It reminds me of a mini-summit gathering at Gettysburg a few years ago. We stopped to eat dinner at a local restaurant and two of us had straw hats on while the other two wore Indy fedoras. The waitress asked what was up with the hats, so we told her we were a combination Amish/Mennonite band on tour. She believed it!

What happens if the weapon is a different colour?
I think you have that wrong. It's when the hold up man is wearing a brown Fedora.

You are on to something there. Don't know how this cam up, but I was talking with a friend about hats the other day and he said that they aren't "socially accepted" any more. I thought to myself "Do fedoras offend? Is wearing one some kind of fashion faux pas?" I was dumbfounded.

I don't know about hat being not "socially accepted"... But I'm sure in most regions (especially nowadays), fedoras just aren't "fashionable" attire anymore.
Although here in the Philippines, there has been a resurgence in hats. Particularly hats like these:
I think it has to do with Michael Jackson's death. All of a sudden I can see hats like these sold in malls and worn by teenage girls and guys (well, not all of them are "real" guys - if you know what I mean).

fenris, that style of hat, usually made out of cloth, has been popular her for quite a while, long before MJ's death.
worn by both sexes.

I was at Leesburg, FL bike rally last summer sporting my Penman Raider's and a hat vendor asked me if I wanted to buy the Real McCoy.
Thinking he might have a used AB for sale, I said 'Sure, I'll take a look.'
It was a wool Dorfman with a pin.
I could only smile, then said 'No offense, but you need to stick to biker hats!' and walked on.
