I'm not sure any images exist of the back. That said, and despite the time period you mention, it's hard for me to imagine indy as steranko drew him wearing any half belt. He's say that's for sissies, then ash his cigarette on your head. He just seems that kind of guy...
You could also look to the Marvel Comics, some of which weren't bad. The color alone would make that jacket unique.

Heehee! Yeah! And he was originally conceived as an alcoholic womanizer!

I had the same thought, Hatch. I was actually surprised that it had a regular Indy-style back. I was expecting pleats that end in a half-belt, or a stitch line. Nothing says another version couldn't be built that way.
That said, I still love this project. Exceptional idea.

I still haven't seen a pic of back ot a Steranko concept jacket ...are their any out there ?? I've not seen any of the Marvel Comics........does anyone have link to all the 'concept' drawings done by Steranko for Raiders??

Yes, RCS, I imagine that he would call Navy pilots sissies. They're up there in the sky in those metal birds, he's down on the ground fighting tanks with his bare hands. To Steranko Indy, EVERYONE who is not him is a sissy. He's just that kind of man. Women want him and men want to be him. That's pretty much the essence of Steranko, if you're not familiar with his work. So please don't take it the wrong way or try to make my statement something that it's not, as it's said with a light heart and a smile and is certainly not a belief I hold, coming from a military family.
Hatch, you remember that 'oil rigger jacket' that showed up on here a little while back? Just going off memory, I seem to recall that jacket having a back similar to the one you describe. Might just be imagining things, though...

no worries F+G i didn't take it any other way. I read it more as you relating Steranko's character.
It may be a good thing the character we know as Indiana Jones is not Steranko's

i don't see why not Hatch. Steranko's jacket drawing is missing detail such as pockets. I'm not so sure I like that collar.

I reckon you could tidy up that collar and make it work and the pockets would be slash pockets - not cargo. The back would most likely be a half-belt. Heck, I'm for just making do with the Surrogates jacket - it's close enough.

Now that you mention it RC, it does have a bit of that 'Fight Club, Tyler Durden' look to the collar.....

You know, I'll be very interested in seeing someone pull off a Steranko Indy! Plenty of room for creativity there, though I would imagine that the fit of that jacket would make it something of a 'fashion' piece over function. I always thought that the lightest leather would be a good match for that jacket, and I think perhaps a zipper collar like the one on the 'Rocketeer' jacket might work on it too. I'm really curious to see what an interpretation of it would look like; RC, I'm looking at you!
Baldwyn Thanks man! The Staff of Kings looks a bit like a Western jacket to me, although I think this is my second last Indy jacket (just need a Nowak LC!
), after which I'm punching out! ...or at least until Indy V comes out! But like I've learned, when it comes to Indygear, NEVER say "never"!
Indiana Jeff Wow Jeff, it's really good to hear that this jacket made such an impact on you! Thank you! 2000 huh? About time you rewarded yourself with a Struzan in black!
SpeedRcrX Thanks! I'm a little surprised at Tony's enthusiasm for the project... in a good way!
Mike I just can't believe my jacket has been getting kudos from all the stars of the Indygear world! I seriously will have to get this thread framed, and tucked into the jacket pocket!
Thanks for waiting on the reveal sir, and what an honor to get you involved there too!
Tony really pulled it off though, translating a picture to a real jacket! Thanks again, and I'll try to work in some pictures of the jacket in natural sunlight!
crismans Please do! As great as it is to own a one of a kind jacket, perfection loves company! And 'Castor Struzan'? Wicked! Now I just have to work on that hobble...
Raskolnikov My thanks Raskolnikov!
I only wish I could take the credit, but the real pioneers here are guys like Mike, Michaelson, and _! Stealing a jacket off a cover is one thing, but studying it... Or even translating it like Tony did! :applaud:
Indy89 Exactly! Here's something I never thought I'd see... much less wear! Thanks Indy!
Mitch LaRue Mitch! Thank you! Great response lol!
Fortune and Glory I agree, just a matter of time!
Tibor Come to think of it, you may be on to something here! I wish I had thought of that earlier, would have been awesome to get a slightly different back as well!
Now after having the jacket for barely three days, it really is already breaking in and moulding extraordinarily! But from a jacket from Tony, I'd expect nothing less! Either Tony picked some of his finest leather, or this is just it, but this jacket really just reminds me of my first Nowak... The expectation, the feel of the leather, and the pleasure in realizing that it surpassed what I had imagined!
If anyone is considering getting one, the only changes I'd recommend would be maybe a Raiders collar to bridge the series, and like everyone has been saying, a different back to make it your own!
Thanks for all the kind words again, everyone! The response, and the jacket, have been more overwhelming than I had been expecting!

One thing I was always curious about... Earlier this year, Tony had asked me really out of the blue for pictures of me wearing this particular jacket. He didn't really say why, but I remember he asked me on more than one occasion (the first time I wasn't sure that he was serious), so I sent them over.
Now what I'm wondering about is if anybody here had asked him to make a second 'Struzan' jacket? I figured that if that was the case, I'd eventually see someone reference it, but nothing. So I'm wondering if someone did get a second Struzan or if he just wanted the pictures for his own reference? Something I always wondered about...
Sorry, just thinking out loud here.

I don't know Castor. Could be anything. For his own reference, another customer to see the jacket, a movie he was working on? Around that time up to going to Italy he had been working on three movies.
Knowing Tony he wouldn't need the photos to make another, he'd have all info and patterns.
It is a nice jacket.

Thanks RC, and that's what I was thinking as well; that if he needed to recreate the jacket, he probably wanted the pictures to show off the jacket, not for the pattern I mean. Which was why I was wondering if it was someone here who had asked for a copy of the jacket.
And sorry to dredge up this old thread, I didn't mean to bring up this thread out of vanity, but more from genuine curiousity.

It is an outstanding jacket, Castor. And, incredibly sadly now, probably the only one of its kind for, at least, the forseeable future. I know I don't need to tell you to cherish it, it's truly an irreplaceable piece.

The jacket may be wrong, but look how accurate some of the other details are. Bag strap under the jacket and belt details for starters.

Man, I missed this thread the first time 'round. That is AWESOME Castor! I've also liked the look of the gear on the book covers. I've also wondered what Struzan modeled it after. To me, it always looked like a Carhartt detroit jacket with cargo pockets added.

Thanks guys, I'm really starting to treasure this jacket now, but I must admit that I had previously treated this as my true beater jacket. While I've babied my other jackets to the point that most of you would be smacking your heads, this was the jacket I turned to when it was pouring outside, when I had to dig my car out of snow, and when I was afraid of getting any other jacket dirty. I'd worn this jacket to the point that after barely half a year in, the lining already is starting to wear out. I'd always thought that the other jackets were irreplaceable, and that this one was novelty jacket.
Who would have ever predicted the irony, that in retrospect, this jacket would be a white horse. Not to say that the other jackets were not special or undeserving of their pampering, but that this jacket, the ugly ducking of the collection, would transform into a swan.
In any event, I do hope that somewhere on the back of another fan, there is another.

As far as your treatment of this jacket is concerned, I don't think Tony would have wanted it any other way.
For those of you own his jackets, I know they must seem very precious right now. But remember, the man himself said, "It's just a jacket." I hope you continue to wear it well.
Regards,
Forrest
