All of the Stetsons with that label have the 1984 date, and they made literally hundreds of thousands of them in both wool and fur. As you point out, for those who want a 'complete' collection, it's definitely an item to pick up. Always go for the best condition.

Is there any way to tell a "theater" hat from the rest of the stetson temples or is it just the luck of the draw?

Yeah, what constitutes a "theater" hat?

So was this the 'product placement' hat that was briefly used in TOD?

Re: anybody own a Stetson Temple?
The quality of the 'theater hat' felt was VASTLY superior to any of the standard fur felt Stetsons. They also had a fancy gold Stetson creast on the cloth sweatband. Rumor had it (and was even shown on an old Discovery Channel program) that the felt came from Austria.
I own one, and the different between it and a standard fur felt Stetson 'Temple' (which I owned and wore out two 'back in the day') were/are as different as night and day.
Quick recap, Lucasfilm was planning on selling them in the theater lobbies during the release of Temple of Doom, but the idea was scrapped shortly before the film came out. The so called theater hats languished in the Paramount Studio warehouse (that's where mine came from) and were eventally turned over to secondary sellers and mixed into the standard Stetson Temple inventory and sold off.
