I guess you two haven't been paying attention. The leather was not smooth. That myth has been debunked

Namely, the jacket would hang-up on the gun belt and the whip. Additionally, the leather used for the Wilson’s jackets did not lend itself well to artificial aging as the finish would flake off."

I have lobby cards from Raiders and a screen photo from the press kit, like the cobra scene above, and the leather appears smooth. Yet, you take a jacket and distress it, wet it and let it dry time and again, and after the whole process was completed, it would look like roughed up hide, as that is exactly what they did to the jacket. Take the natural oil out of the leather and this is the appearance you get.
You hit the nail on the HEAD !!!!!!
And how do you guys know this works? Have you tried this? If you haven't, are you willing to subject this theory to empirical testing? I might have a Wested in lamb I won't be wearing anymore you can borrow to test this.

Well I did test it a bit with swatch of leather from wested, I don't have a lamb jacket to try it on. Here's what I got out of it, the thing is I didn't take any before pics !!

that really doesn't look good Dutch. How many times did you soak it and let it dry?

I'm surprised you don't have a lamb Raiders jacket. Maybe you should buy that one from Geert and test your theories. It will be interesting to see if you have a comfortably wearable and useable jacket afterward

The hawaii jacket and one of the studio jackets may be heavily grained. But many shots of the other jackets show virtually no grain. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that some of the jackets were mostly smooth, in as far as the old style leather as concerned.

NOT debunked by far.

BTW this is a todd jacket thread and WAY off topic.

You want to start another thread RCS?

Even Peter says they weren't smooth.

It wasn't me who took the thread OT, I don't need to start a new one. A new one would be unnecessary anyway as there are plenty on the top to resurrect if one so wishes. :)

So there you are. Continue talking in circles if you wish guys.

Actually I think Peter said they werent THAT smooth, but they were not dinohide. And if you think so thats fine, but there is a behind load of evidence stating otherwise.

Sooooo...back to old vs. new Todd's:

Todd, keep up the good work. Detractors/debaters will always be/do that.

The degree of openness you have in posting your sourcing of items and how/why you decide to make things as they are are much appreciated.

Old and new versions of your jackets each have their own strong points; and all your other products have been great for me.

Keep it up.

I have to agree, that as impressive as the old jackets were, the new ones are even better.

This new leather and darker color seals it...I'm totally buying one of these new Todd's Standards. I've owned a LOT of Raiders jackets but none of them have looked or fit me as well as Todd's. Order coming Todd! Keep up the good work!

Just ordered my second Todd's Standard. I have to say, for warm weather/cool evenings, it's just great. There is a wonderful mix of a subtle background grain, and some areas of courser grain, much like I imagine the originals were. The pockets fold in and rumple nicely, the color is great, the collar is thin enough to take a shape and keep it.

I never had an "old" Todds, so I can't compare but the new ones are awfully accurate to my eye.
