Head Shape & Turn

I've got a long oval head, but the line of symmetry on my head is not on a straight line from front to back--it is slightly askew, sort of going from 1:00 to 7:00 (although that may be a slight exaggeration). If I put on a long oval hat with a symmetrical bash that aligns from front to rear, it will feel to be a perfect fit, but upon looking in the mirror, I will see that it is slightly askew, or turned, towards the 1:00 position. If I "turn" the hat to center the line of symmetry of the hat on the 12:00 to 6:00 line of my head, I tend to distort the hat slightly as it wants to sit naturally along the 1:00 to 7:00 line. I tried shifting the hat center line on one of my borsalinos once to more properly have a symmetrical bash along my 12:00 to 6:00 line and force the hat to align in that mode...with mixed results. Everyone's head is unique, none of them are perfectly symmetrical whether oval, long oval, round oval, etc. Different hats may align on different heads in varying ways and perhaps that is part of what has resulted in the Indiana Jones "Turn." I've seen the various hat conformateurs still in use by a few hat makers and I've wondered exactly what type of adjustments they might be able to make from their various hat blocks to what comes off the confromateur. I would think shifting the symmetrical axis might be one that makes more sense to me as "doable." I think I'm pretty close to placing my first order with Art Fawcett, so perhaps I'll learn a little more on this...

Ok, when MAKING a hat that will feature the turn, does the hat maker turn the hat before sewing the sweat in? Just curious.

As it was explained to me, no. The point of making a hat with the turn is to get both the felt and sweatband to "break in crooked" I guess you could say. It's do ing what one does with an unturned hat by turning it yourself, but has the help professional tools and eliminated the initial discomfort to the wearer. In order to get the right look, the hat has to be initially blocked and put together straight, then have the turn set into it.

Ah, I was never clear. But figured that was the case. I'm thinking of doing a Raiders hat with the turn when Penman begins the rabbit hat sales.

I have my fill of turned hats, otherwise I'd be right along beside you. :) However, I still may go for something else. :-k

I don't have a turned hat, OR a custom hat.

To me to have a Raiders hat it must have the turn.

I agree with Oak, without "turn" the hat is merely a hybrid of raiders
and CS or LC.

I found it very nice, when placed on my head (the swooped brim and all), but I noticed that the hat appears quite ugly, when it's not worn: it looks so asymmetric and distorted, when seen from above :? you look at it and think "hey, there's something wrong".

am I the only one who thinks that the turn is someway ugly (for lack of a better word)?
bro, lets see some pics of what exactly you mean.
Maybe its all in yur head. lol
but seriously lets see them pics. =P~

Thus my desire for a RABBIT Raiders hat. Having the turn, rabbit, and a great ribbon! Can't wait!

I guess it's a matter of choice...I despise the turn...it's just goofy to me and that's my taste...

I like symetrical hats....I feel character comes after wear anyway with good quality hats

That's why Im dumping my Mag HJ...Its a nice hat...but with the turn, I would rather see it go to someone who LOVES that turn so I can get more "un-turned" fedooras

would that offer, by any chance, be a free one?
