Getting the Burma thanks to this thread of yours. Its actually for dress occasions, weddings, special nights out etc.

I would indeed stick out in Glasgow with a Fedora on, but I cant imagine there are many cities in the world where hats like this are are still the "in thing"

Well I had no troubles in Edinburgh but I would hardly dare to wear it openly in Glasgow. No offence but while some of the citizens are the most amiable people ever, it is also true that the city if full of hooligans (aka neds, or chavs in England) reason for being scared to wear anything out of the ordinary while enjoying the town. Some places are better than others of course and some hours of the day are idiots-free but, considering that I'm always moving on public transport, I never feel 100% safe wearing something like a hat. That's me and Glasgow no offence Scott.

Glad you enjoyed the thread and was convinced to get a Burma Adventurer. It's an excellent dress hat and the colour goes with almost everything. I was going to post more pictures soon enough, so you might want to wait for them before you order one... you sure about the colour? As I said... it's not grey

No offence taken. I've heard storys of people taking beatings just because they look a little different and have had my fair share of trouble in the past just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time (got neat little scar on my chin from one incident ;-) ).

Edinburgh is deffinatly more tourist friendly but again it has its rough spots and I've witnessed some brutal fights in the city centre. Dont want to put people off coming to Scotland though, Glasgow in particular. Its a fun city to live in and a good base if anyone is planning on seeing the Scottish countryside.

It's really a difficult colour to catch on camera, at least indoor. A while ago I made for myself a video in which I held the camera and spin slowly on myself 360° with a natural source of light near me and believe me the colour changed a lot. Directly under the sun in a bright Italian sunny day, as I already said, it appears more of a green-brown tone. In any other lighting condition it shows a prevalent grey tone.

I want to repeat myself, I'm not saying that this colour is the exact match to the film one because it is not... but it is the closest that I have found till now. Vintage grey herbert johnson is a colour that can hardly be found nowadays and all the indy grey hats on the "market" are usually way too off in my opinion because have a predominant blue undertone and they are often too light. I particularly dislike the Akubra greys for a Raiders, their colour is very nice both in carbon steel and moonsomething but they are not Raiders grey, that's the only problem in my opinion. If I wanted a normal grey hat, I would be ready to praise the akubra colours. There are some good grey hats around but none matching the raiders grey in my opinion.

The second nicest colour I've seen is the one that BendigOak (Penman Hats) produces although I would really like to see one in person because in many pictures it is still not convincing, it still looks too much like a Crystal Skull grey. I really wish somebody will bring one to the next Eurosummit.
I'm posting this because I know you're following the thread BendingOak and I really hope you won't take offence because I don't mean any, really.

Of course it was easier for me to experiment and buy a Christy's for 60 euro rather than buy a Penman for over 200.


If in the past there was much debate about the Raiders grey hat being grey or not it is because it is not an evident grey, if you know what I mean.

Bringing us to the dispute over the colour of the clipper Fedora. The colour looks good to me and shown next to that HJ, which has a blue vibe to it, I'd say the burma is close. The price is also why I'm looking at Christys, I'm new to buying hats and so while I experiment I'd like to do it with what is a nice hat but is not gonna break the bank.

Honestly after having bought so many Adventurebuilts, 50 quids for a Christy is like buying bread at the shop

Anyway I asked a few people who know nothing about our colour problems on COW or Indiana Jones at all... they all said it's a "grey-brown" tone, which is all I hoped to hear

To me the Raiders Grey hat was the very last hat I wanted to have in my collection, having found this close enough colour and block shape I would say that my search is over... with the exception of a possible lucky find of a vintage HJ, period-block-colour-wise correct, I'm always open to that.

Now I only have to change the ribbon to a darker one... but very little time right now for anything like that.

Really enjoyed this thread. I'm shopping for a gray hat and really like the look of the Burma. Has anyone ordered it with a black ribbon? Very dark brown would obviously be spot on, but I wonder how black would go -- I think gray and black would go well. . . although I realize this Burma is a special, earthy green-brown gray, so maybe the dark brown would fit better.

Well I did request the colour that they usually put on the sable hats but they didn't have the correct size (I wanted a slightly larger ribbon). I had to choose between colour and size and I went for size.
It needs to be darker, I'm aware of it.

The definition of "earthy green-brown gray" seems to be spot on

Thanks to this thread, I'm going to be getting a burma Christys in the next week or so. It will worn for dress occasions/work so it won't see anything too harsh, element-wise.

After exchanging pms with Erri, I'm going to request a couple of custom features. I've looked over the Hornet website but couldn't find an answer to this question (or one that explained simply and clearly enough to get through my natural denseness ). When requesting any custom features do I contact them before ordering or order and then send an email on what I want changed?

I always asked them (Mr Davies) before I ordered, never had a problem.

I love a grey IJ hat. There is a grey HJ on ebay right now, but unfortunately it's not my size Nice lids.

Now I'm curious how the Burma color compares to an Adventurbilt Raiders Traveler gray.

It's my understanding (which is probably quite small), that the CS color is a lighter gray but, more, importantly has blue undertones. The Burma is not a gray as we usually think of it. It can appear gray but has more of a brown base.

And now I'll step aside and let more knowledgeable folk correct me.
