Yes, it is. The drill is for transition and hand speed. But as you mentioned, it does go MUCH deeper then that. And in the later stages of training, I touch on that and go more in depth to how I view the whip as a weapon. But as one of my students found out, you must know your control, footwork, transitions and whip knowledge and lore before we ever get to combat applications. It's not something I take lightly but it is a lot of fun. I may post some of my "Drills" sometime. We'll see.

Ok guys, After a week long wait, i FINALLY got around to shooting some good solid video.
I was at the dojang for a good 2 hours or so, and i tried these routines a hundred times at least..... these are the best ones....

also, note: Im using a 8 foot cowhide from Lauren and a 6 foot Nylon "target" whip from Ron Allen....
The timing differences between them is very interesting.
The longer whip DOES afford the user more "space" between the adversaries, however timing is ALOT more important and targeting becomes more difficult.
The short whip makes targeting easy BUT notice the distance.. the baddies are CLOSER to me.....

Ill break it down really easy in case ya cant tell whats going on.
Im facing off against two puncing bags with brightly colored headgear for heads. the "guy" on the right has a foam sword.
The first overhand throw is to grab the weapon and disarm him. the second crack is a sidearm flick to his head which is followed by an overhead loop to the other guys head.
easier said than done.
This is just ONE example and I have tried mixing it up... adding a 3rd guy... adding other "weapons" to take away etc...... all in all its pretty fun. best of all the weapons and "heads" are all foam so no damage to my whips!

i hope you guys and gals enjoy this, it was fun to make! you should see the outtakes!

I’ve been waiting to see these, Thanks for posting them. It sounds like you got some interesting and fun results with your experiment. I don’t know about any one else but I wouldn’t want to walk into that.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie Batman Returns but there is a scene where Michelle Phiffers Catwoman displays here whip skill by using her bullwhip to casually remove the heads off of a couple of department store display manikins. This reminded me of that.

I enjoyed the videos though and am very envious of your training space!

I'm with BWB - so envious of your practice space! Tons of room, high ceilings, easily invented safe-for-the-whip targets, nice floor, etc. And I think you've mentioned you even have a mirror to practice in front of too? Awesome. :-)

The martial arts related videos are neat, and it's good to see you're getting into targets - a super fun skill, IMO. You look like you're handling the shorter 6ft really well, and that definitely looks closer to the speed of any sort of "real" fighting. When I saw the 8ft video, and watched you wind up for the second crack to behead the first guy, it was easy to imagine "him" just rushing in and crushing you while you were resetting.

Overall, it was fun to see some video of someone actually having some fun playing around with disarming "people" and whatnot. Thanks for taking the time to post 'em!

Thank's for posting. Ditto on the envy part of your space.
Look's like fun! Now, I'd like to see some of your other learned martial arts moves mixed in. :)

hmmmm........ I guess i could throw something together....

Like Lauren said, when i was "reloading" with the 8 foot the guy could rush in on me....... I suppose thats where a big sword in my left hand would come in handy.... :-)

Hey Kooniu, good to meet you yesterday :D in the flesh so to speak.... :D

I don't know too much about whip boxing, but watching Kooniu going through his moves yesterday with a shop dummy I think I'll stick to basic Karata.....he looked lean and mean and very impressive.....scarey good if you know what I mean.....

Just to change the subject altogether Kooniu had a whip with him that in a few seconds converted from a bullwhip, into a snake whip, but also into a stock whip, very very impressive...

Hope your trip back to Ireland was a safe one..

Best Wishes

Tony

I was amazed that the difference in the action and timing of that 6 foot whip as well. It is greasy fast...
It should be noted that it is an australian style bullwhip with a 12 inch handle. I liked it so much I am making one for myself. It is the easiest whip I have ever cracked.

Magno,
It just goes to show that you never bring a knife to whip fight.
Great clip- thanks for sharing it.

There's nothing wrong at all about bringing a whip to a knife fight...

Just brandish the whip really menacingly, and when he's laughing uncontrollably shoot the guy with the Glock you've been reaching for while distracting him with the whip....

I'm contemplating posting some short range whip work. Wraps, entanglements, throws and the like. Well as some striking.
