CLM, i hear you loud and clear.....it was more comfortable when indy was underground, then people wouldn't put together that you're wearing THE gear from original vendors or gear-nut vendors.
now all the indy 4 hoopla is coming out and people will put 2 and 2 together and say......"hey, you look like that han solo guy with the whip". yes, it was the fashion that you based your style on, but it was yours. now everyone will want a hat, and a leather jacket and then you get lost or blended in with the masses that are there for just a snapshot in time.
do i still wear my AB religiously....no....and wearing an indy jacket without the hat feels really, really strange. i lwore NH shirt/pants, the jacket, the hat and 405's religiously. i really loved it and still do. will i wear my gear again....#### yeah.....just wait'n for the hype to die down a bit.
besides....it gives me a change to expand my wardrobe to things that aren't brown.....

Well, I just received the Roots jacket in hand, and it fits me quite well, if a bit longer than what I was seeking (length is about 28" in the back seam).
First impressions: colorwise it is a lighter, almost medium brown, much lighter than the darker browns presented in Wested/G&B owners' pics, and the stitching does seem quite well done. Overall construction appears to be good.
What does concern me is that physicaly it is very lightweight jacket, almost like a leather shirt. My fear is that it might be too delicate, potentially tearing if snagged. "Tribe leather" is cowhide, albeit perhaps only 2.0 oz or so. It seems like a feather it seems like compared to my Aero FQHH...and might be too light even for what I am seeking: a Spring/Fall-weight leather jacket.
I am close to ordering G&B and/or US Wings' lambskin jackets, accepting an action back and trading desired back simplicity for manufacturing quality, as it seems both G&B and US Wings are top notch. I am not fully decided though, as ideally I would like to have all 3 jackets in hand, to compare them and make a final decision.
Does anyone with experience with Roots clothing, gear, leather bags, etc. have an opinion on their durability/longevity?

Interesting. Are these available at Roots retail outlets? I've got one close by and it might be worth a trip to look at it.

Found this today. If you can believe the advertising bumpf, this may have predated the A2, etc., and could be a precursor of the Indy jackets.

I have had several Orvis leather jackets over the years, and some did not hold up very well. They are manufactured in China, which is annoying as the price point is still about $300 - $600 for a jacket when the cost to manufacture them is so much lower there. I did try on this jacket a while back, and while it was a nice piece for $300, it was too much for an Orvis jacket given how some of their jackets I've owned didn't hold up.

Interesting. I've had some of their fishing gear, but never any of the clothing. Can you comment on any other items?

bobjones, that jacket is not even close to screen accurate.........
KIDDING!!!!! sorry, i'm just use to people nitpicking jacket offerings as of late
from what i can see, that jacket hide looks awesome! if this jacket is cut in the same manner as roots' other offerings, i would love to try it on....without the wife of course cuz she'd never notice if i bought it
i'm quite impressed with the construction of my roots cafe racer jacket. if yours is anything like mine, you definitely have a winner there. she's cowhide so even though it is thin, i'm sure she'll take a fair bit of abuse and it looks like it'll just look sweeter with age.
congrats on your purchase. if you or anyone threw a fedora on while wearing that close'nuff, i think it would look very smart!

The Roots Raiders jacket looks pretty nice to me. I have a couple of Roots jackets, not all leather like this one, but they are pretty well made. Interestingly enough this Roots jacket even has a companion Raiders bag made from the same leather:

There's a comment about the bag being the "official gift to the cast and crew of the movie" so there may be more of an official tie-in between the Roots and KotCS than initially thought? Or it could be a "gift" to the cast and crew of some entirely unrelated movie...

I didn't seek a SA jacket, as I liked the Indy front but not the "accoutrements" of the back.
That being said, it is an EXTREMELY lightweight jacket, almost a leather/suede shirt really, and will have to quickly order jackets from other makers to compare. I am not sure if I will retain it...

How heavy is your Roots jacket? The Raiders must be like under 2 lbs. it seems.

Some of the Orvis stuff that I have bought, like the Signature twill shirts and Signature polos, are incredible, along with their Rhinohide pants:

They are probably what Indy would have worn if he could.
Its just their leather jackets that have not worn well over time, but their other clothing that I have owned has been uniformly superb.

mine is extremely light....kind of like a leather shirt. its more of fashion leather outerwear than a jacket persay.......good construction though.

That's why I am thinking to order a G&B and see if one of those is more suitable. Even though it is cowhide, its so thin and lightweight I am not sure how much of a pounding it could take. I had a suede shirt that had more heft.
