Imagine, nice work on the hat, looks great. I like it like that. :D Looks like a great LC bash there. Leave it that way, looks awesome. I will post a thread with my hat when I get it. Great looking hat now, much improved. That is a keeper.

AHHH! This post by "Indiana Cromeens" in the "Todd's Budget HJ" thread (viewtopic.php?t=27252) confirms my fears!! So I got the short-crowned HJ!!! Take a look at these pictures!
Indiana Cromeens wrote:I got one by accident when I ordered one about a year or so ago, I reccomend against it, here is a link to a shot of the hat next to a crusade AB. I ended up sending the hat back for the full size one

and here is his taller crowned poet

Tear-drop (in the literal since, not the bash) to this. Well, now I have an LC bash on a shorter HJ. It looks about right for LC, but is it too short even for LC?? That's the question I pose to all of you and NOW, should I discuss this with Magnoli? Indy Magnoli, weigh in with your thoughts too, please!

Best,
-Steve

It really just comes down to what YOU want to do.
Time is probably an issue though, so I wouldn't sit on the fence too long.
If it is too short for one it is too short for all.

You're right, Ron. It took that latest post on the "Todd's Budget HJ" forum to make me realize that I had indeed received a short-crowned HJ. If all of them were that low, then I would have accepted it, but knowing I have an anomaly doesn't sit well with me, and I'll pursue the notion of an exchange with Magnoli. I've put the hat back in its box and intend on not touching it again until I've received word! Seems all those recommending sending the hat back were correct! Only one other possibility remains - maybe HJ has stopped making the higher crown and Magnoli is only receiving these new 'squat' versions. That would be disastrous!!! Take care, all

Best,
-Steve

Taken from the tail end of that thread:
Short crown HJ poet version vs. AB raiders:

If you didn't get what you ordered, and more particularly what you WANTED, send it back. You want the Raiders HJ. $300.00 is too much for a hat you didn't want.

Here's some more of mine to convince you!

Perhaps Magnoli and Steve can put a "rush" on a new one for you.

Your decision of course, but everyone here just want's you to have the hat YOU want, and I'm sure that includes the guy who sold it to you and the guy who made it for you!

bigrex, thanks for posting those pics, that is a huge difference. Imagine, if your were really going for a Raiders hat on this Magnoli/AB/HJ, then I would send it back. If your happy with the LC look you got with the hat, then it is a wonderful hat my friend. I do agree with Tron though, we want to see you happy with your hat and I am sure Steve and Magnoli do too, right guys? So the choice is up to you imagine, depends on I would guess what Steve or Magnoli could do for you too. Best of luck on this imagine

Seems weird that you could even get a short crown. Doesn't Steve build the Magnoli HJs up from raw bodies? Can't see how you could get a short crown off of his block unless there was some major shrinkage in transit.

No. They're not built from raw bodies - at least, that's how I understand it. From what I gather, Magnoli orders an allotment of HJs from London (buys them in bulk, essentially). He then sends those HJs over to Steve to have the ribbon replaced, the body re-blocked and the liner sewn in (etc). With only about a half of an inch to an inch difference in crown-height, it is possible that the hat simply passes on through the process unnoticed until the customer receives the hat and goes, "eh...something's not right here". That's basically what was knocking around in my head the second I opened the box, but tried to think of ways in which to work with the smaller body. So long answer short - to my knowledge, Steve does not work with raw bodies. He is actually modifying an existing hat (which means SOME HJs are coming from Swales - or wherever Magnoli gets them - with improper crown heights). This explains why Todd's ALSO has a random short-crown HJ listed on the discount page of the site.

Seems to me that either Magnoli or Steve givin all the hats they have handled over the years would have noticed. :-k

as far as i know, Both Magnoli an Steve are known for keeping their customers happy so if you are not happy with it, send it back and you will get a new, taller one. :)
just a shame you have to wait a little bit longer because of this mistake, but.... sh** happens.

As I understood, the hats at the least come unfinished -- without ribbon, sweatband, etc, because they're difficult to reblock with the factory sweat stitching because they're prone to tear at the brim break as they're being stretched over the block. So, the reblocking process should have affected the crown height with everything Steve does to stabilize the felt. Maybe this one wasn't stabilized as well and the crown shrank up?

If you are set on your HJ having the Raiders bash then send it back. But you said that you would the Raiders bash into a Fed you have on the way. I think the Last Cruisade bash looks great, a nice job on your part. I would want my HJ to have the Raiders bash. I would send it back. But if you don't mind having a LC HJ, less hassle, though I'm sure Magnoli will do all he can.

Well, not quite. To quote...me from an earlier thread...
Johnny Fedora wrote:The Magnoli Clothiers HJ consists of a Poet hat body, and all of the parts of the hat separate. These parts are then sent to Fedora. The hat is then blocked by Steve using his old Raiders block, (turned if you wish) assembled, trimmed, ribboned, bowed (using the correct ribbon that only he and Marc can get), and then styled anyway you like. Oh, also, the stock Poet is a little more difficult to reblock as the sweat is sewn on by a machine thus creating a perforation along which it could tear off the brim during a reblock. The MC HJ's sweat is hand sewn allowing an easer/less nerve wracking reblock.
So to sum up, the raw hat bodies, and all the fixin's are sent to Steve where he builds the hats. For a more in depth discussion on these hats check out...

Fair enough, JF. You've no doubt done your homework better than I have on the matter, so I'm happy to take your word for it...that is why I was so careful to throw in the "as I understand it"s and "I believes". =) Unless we hear any different from Magnoli or Steve, your word is golden! Take care!
