Great job! It’s nice to see a do-it-yourself project turn out so well. The hat looks magnificent. The finished block is a beauty with the sealer on it.

I love the liner logo! Inkjet silk printing it is brilliant idea – I had no clue that they even made at-home printable silk.

Well done.
I can’t wait the see how your shirt turns out. :D
Mark Brody wrote:The ribbon that Leko gave me from hatsupply.com isn't a very good match for an Indy hat, so I'm waiting on one of Todd's replacement ribbons.
The ribbon I have from Todd’s looks very much like the one in your photo.
WeeMadHamish wrote:You need to seal the plaster so the wet felt doesn't soak into it.
Or just cover the plaster block with a plastic shopping bag. It will conform perfectly to the block and there is no “print through.”

Could you tell us what color felt you ordered?

Great job on the tutorial page too! I never thought about making a hat, but with instructions like that, I bet even I could do it!

Well done!

Outstanding work. I can't believe  :D Please tell me, how long did it take? Did you need more than one trial?
Cheers.

You've done very well there Mark! ESPECIALLY considering that you do not have any hat making tools as for example a rounding jack among others.

Did you use a ferrule for the reed?

Regards,

Marc

Thanks again, everyone! Yes, I did use a ferrule. I didn't even know such a thing existed until I talked to the woman at hatsupply.

Altogether, it was about 15 hours from start to finish. About 12 hours of that was actual work. If I were to make another one today, I could probably do it in 10 hours.

A question from the peanut gallery...

The cord you used to tie the wet felt to the hat block, is that specific type of block cord that hatsupply sells, or just a length of nylon cord tied on?

The funny thing about that...
she didn't know anything about ferrules until I told her about it last year when I bought some sweats from her.

All in all, not a bad place to get stuff. I was always curious about her felts.

Sorry, I do not see on hatsupply:

"Fur felt dress body, chocolate"

But

(The nearest macht would be)

"Velour Capelines DoubleSided by Leko Chocolate"
or
"Beaver Hoods, brown"

What's going on ???

This could be useful since I'd like to make my own hat too...

Brody,

I know it's a little late for this, but you mentioned not being able to find extremely fine grit sandpaper even in your hobby store... you should be able to find as fine as 2000-grit (or higher) anywhere that sells auto-body supplies. I went looking for Bondo at my local Wally-world and lo, there was 1000 and 2000-grit sandpaper hanging nearby.

Just for future reference.

I think I'll be able to pop the bashes out and revome the ribbon pretty easily (since It's not actually sewn in yet). Thanks for the help.

Hat Supply's website doesn't accurately represent what they have in stock. Over the phone, she called it a dress body, and the invoice said the same. When I called up originally, I was asking for the beaver body, but she said it wasn't available. The website will give you an idea of what they have, but you're much better off calling and ordering over the phone.

I had a little trouble with my Todd's order, but it finally arrived. I'd never heard about the ribbon being too short until after I'd already placed the order, but when it arrived, it was indeed too short, but the color is much better as you can see from the pic (Hat Supply on the left, Todd's on the right). Anyway, I called them about the length issue, and they said they'd send me and extra length to make up for it, which ought to work out fine. I just can't do the one-piece ribbon and bow that I like. I'll also be rebashing it for a more SOC look once I replace the ribbon.
