I like Byrnie Utz shop. A wide variety and they're the only hat shop I've been in that understands what a dimensional cut brim means.

I live in Texas and there just aren't many people here that would call my ToD fedora a cowboy hat

Paul: Do many people still wear cowboy hats in Texas? My father moved to Waco about 25 years ago. I visit him regularly, and I would say that in the narrow corridor of Dallas/FortWorth airport to Waco, and on many trips around the latter, I see very few people in 'em. As a matter of fact, I probably see as many being worn in Massachusetts!

I live just outside of north Houston and work downtown. I have to say not many people wear hats in downtown Houston - they are trying to look business-like. Those few that you do see with a cowboy hat on usually wear a dressy cowboy hat. There are still some of the old timer oil men around downtown that wear suits and their cowboy hat. However - go out to the small towns where the ranchers and farmers live and you see them a lot more and they are usually the everyday hat to work outside. You do actually see a lot more people wearing cowboy hats when the rodeo is in town. It's a pretty big deal here and there are trail-rides that come in from hundreds of miles around in the wagons and horseback to honor the "old timer trail rides". Then there is me standing in line waiting for the park-and-ride bus with my fedora. I told Fedora this story - there are two lots that are several miles apart for the particular bus company I use and if you get in the wrong line you will have a very long walk to your car. I have had people tell me that they know which line to get in when they see "the Hat" in line.

I got an Indiana Jones comment while in a watchman's shop today. I struck up a conversation with the watch repairman who owns the small shop when he really was taken with my Adventurebilt. In fact, he took down all the information he could about it since he really likes nice hats and was really appreciating the quality of my fedora. (Heads up, Steve! ) He wasn't thinking Indy until I told him the AB connection to IJ4. He was genuinely impressed with that. Shortly thereafter, a customer came in with an old clock for repairs and he also complimented me on my hat. This fellow said it reminded him of an Indy fedora, though he never said it in a demeaning way. He was also impressed with the quality of the hat. He looked at me with my hat and G-2 jacket and said it looked like I was ready for adventure, but it was all a complimentary tone.

I wish I could get the Indiana Jones comment! Last Halloween when I was wearing the fedora and jacket, three PC techs that I work with thought I was a cowgirl, pilgrim, and a pimp in that order. And, I was wearing the Dorfman hat with the pin that says Indiana Jones.

I received the "nice pimp hat" comment last year. But the young lady commented that she didn't know what else to call it. She hadn't heard it called a fedora before.

I agree, there are problably a few others out here as well. One thing I do like about the Northwest, you can pretty much get away with wearing an indy jacket for most of the year due to the cooler temps, even in summer.

I'll have to keep that response in mind, the next time it happens. So if you hear I have been hauled off to the slammer, then I guess the comment went awry to someone in blue.

I got the comment, "You look like a Hasidic diamond merchant." It was said with a smile and I took that as a compliment.

That's a new one.

Whenever I get the "Indy" comment, I think it's usually from smart-alecks, so I say to them, "Yes, very good," or "Hey, you're quick!"

I was once at Knott's getting my picture taken in one of those dress-up places where you dress in period 1800's clothes and get your picture taken so it looks like a scene from that time and I kept my AB on instead of using a cowboy hat (I had just gotten it and I wanted to wear it - plus I hadn't seen how it looked in photos yet!). Anyway, this older man who I assume was the owner of that particular shop came up to me after the photos were done and said, "That hat's not one of mine... can I take a look at it?" Needless to say, he was very impressed with the quality of the hat, and was very excited about it. I think he took down Adventurebilt.com from me, if I remember correctly.

the most memorable comment i got was in macy's in new york city.....being an out and about tourist you really have to time your washroom breaks efficiently to avoid discomfort. i was about to ask the nice lady where the facilities were (it was an urgent matter at the time )....and she said, "hey, did you know you look like indiana jones?"

i couldn't come up with anything witty as i was on a mission from god....er...i guess mother nature

I've gotten the cowboy comment a lot. The most unique was one Halloween when a four year old boy exclaimed - "Mommy, it's the Man From Snowy River!"

For those who don't know me here very well, I've got all the key gear to NOT make that mistake - Aldens, Wested, AB Raiders, 10' David Morgan, Noel Howard belts and holsters, actual MKVII bag... It's a whole new generation of misinformed people out there guys.
