More close enough boots...

One of my Alden laces broke a few years ago. I looked everywhere at B&M for a good month with no luck. I eventually called the Alden Shop where I bought them and they sent two pair in an small envelope for a couple bucks.Treadwell wrote:Where are you people finding 54" flat dark brown laces? I can't find any ANYWHERE! (B&M, that is.)

Has anyone ever tried AdTec work boots? I just picked up a pair for about $30 and they seem to look pretty good. Here is a link for a pic...this isn't where I bought them, but it's one of the few pics I could find: http://www.drysdales.com/Mens/Boots/Wor ... Boots.html

I saw these in Dillards yesterday. They are some of the best close enoughs I have seen yet.

Rockport Farnum
I've had a pair of the Rockport Farnums for a couple of months now. Having worn Rockport shoes for years, these are sized a bit big, probably half a size as mentioned above and elsewhere seems about right. As I often like to wear heavy socks or doubled socks for extended walking, the extra room works perfectly for me. I can wear them with a pair of regular socks, but would rather not take a long hike in them this way. I've noticed that they seem to look long on my foot. Narrow towards the toe and the stitchine on the top of the toe is set back farther than on Aldens, which accentuates this. I mostly notice this when I look down at them, when I see them in a mirror, they look fine.
I've been umming and ahhing over ordering a pair of Aldens but the sizing gamble (can they really do nasty things to your feet?) and the cost to the UK with import duty and all is putting me off. Next best thing from my searches seems to be Red wings for period and feel. These seem to be available in the UK, 1907s, I like the colour and style - what does anyone think?

^ those look pretty good!
My ebay close-enoughs turned out pretty well after I painted the sides of the sole and swapped laces (black instead of brown, though):
Still, I had forgotten to look for 9.5W instead of regular, so they're tight, and my dogs were killing me after a day of MegaCon. So the search resumes.

Yet another reminder that the width of your shoe or boot is as important as the length. Feet sizing can change as we age and with weight changes, too. It's a good idean to get your feet measured with a professional device, like the Brannock device used here in the States, at least once a year, or more often if you've had any significant physical changes. My dad used to be a shoe salesman, back from when I was too young to remember, but he ingrained in me the need for proper fitting footwear. As one who's measurement fall outside of the 'average' range, proper fitting footwear has been worth whatever the cost was. If my feet ain't comfy, I ain't happy.Still, I had forgotten to look for 9.5W instead of regular, so they're tight, and my dogs were killing me after a day of MegaCon. So the search resumes

Speaking of Red Wings...these are some very close-enoughs from J. Crew. I like them as much as the Aldens, especially if you get them in the "hickory" color. Plus, they have a treaded sole on them which is a bit more practical than the Aldens. Plus, plus...about $120.00 cheaper.morganswift wrote:I've been umming and ahhing over ordering a pair of Aldens but the sizing gamble (can they really do nasty things to your feet?) and the cost to the UK with import duty and all is putting me off. I've got a pair of them ordered.

Also, there was a link to some Johnston & Murphy boots a while back..the Trafford Moc-Toe they are called. Just a note of personal experience on these: I ordered a pair in my normal size that turned out to be a half-size too big. I sent them back with the proper paperwork to be exchanged for a half-size smaller. Johnston & Murphy didn't email or call or anything, they just refunded my money. When I called to ask why, they explained they would have had to search for a correct size through a store and then have it shipped from that store.
Anyway, not a good experience with them.....
Those are great and very nice in the hickory. Still would have the problem with shipping and import duty here in the UK though. I know the 1907s have a white sole (apparently it was so that workers knew to wipe their feet before entering the house) but I think they have the Indy feel too. Just wondering though whether my credit card will withstand the impact after some other Indy-inspired purchases recently...DoubleOhSeven wrote:Speaking of Red Wings...these are some very close-enoughs from J. That's the first I've seen a pair of Farnums on someone and I have to say they look good - the seam in the toe is the only glaring issue and really it's not that obvious.
I might have to grab a pair - my Indy boots are steel toe Carolinas and when I travel having metal in my shoes is bound to complicate matters when I go through airport security...
Holt - this site has the dark brown on sale, just not my size...
http://www.onlineshoes.com/productpage. ... num&offer=
Did I hear correctly these run a 1/2 size large? If so I could make a 10 1/2 work...

Thanks guys! I'm very pleased with these boots. In my case they are a bit roomy, but that's because I've got small feet size 6/6.5 ish. The smallest size they had was a 7, so I cannot really help you here.
You can also choose between widths AND they're waterproof!
Holt, I got them at Shoebuy, because of their Paypal option, but they seem to be out of stock at the moment.

Well I used some sandpaper on them, but that really didn't contribute more than a few scratches. As seen in the second picture.
In the first picture, I had worn them to work once or twice, which resulted in them getting soaked with water and truck cleaning soap. That's what caused the light spots. So they're actually more natural distressed in my case, if you can call it that.
I also cut off the lip, to look more like Aldens.

Those Timberlands are nice, but I still like the Torrance model better. They are cheaper, and they look a lot nicer in person. So far, I have only found them at Dillards for $99. Here is a link.

those are nice yes,but I still find those rockports almost spot on to aldens.except the toe seam, but that's not such a big deal.
the dark color is almost dead on to what you see on screen in the idol tempel scene.and the best part is the sole is more made for trawels in the forrest and mountains.
I think i have to get me a pair of those.

Okay, so I dumped the dark brown close enoughs I posted earlier in the thread because I just couldn't get them to fit right and a few weeks ago I was out at the thrift store and found these.
For $14.95. They are Work Americas (Made in China,LOL Ironic no?) and were practically brand new when I got them. The tongue was ripped on the right one which is probably why they were donated, and after a good long weekend of cleaning my filthy garage they are distressing nicely.
Granted they are a little high, but I can cut them down if I really want to.
(sigh) I love thrift stores.
