I have left the wire in for now. Since it is my first proper hat, I didn't want to pull it out straight away, because it would be near-impossible to put it back in. I thought it best to leave it in for a while, before even considering removing it. It certainly doesn't seem to prevent the hat taking a new shape, particularly, but really it doesn't seem to do anything. The wire seems to just be too thin and bendy. If I could figure out a way to slide some 1.5mm copper wire in there instead, I would. I know where I am with that.

Take your hat off, and place it brim up in your lap, with the front facing you. You're now looking at the little white bow, and the seam down the back of the sweatband:



At the outside edge of the sweatband, the leather is sewn over on itself to create a little pipe all around the hat. At the back of the hat, just below the bow, this pipe is open, and not sewn together. I've circled it in red on the picture above. That's where the ends of the wire are hiding. On mine, it appears if you flex the hat a little. It's very possible that this wire is cut a little shorter on some hats than on others, so while mine showed itself easily, other shorter wires might be hidden further inside this little pipe.

I pulled mine out very slightly, and snipped the end off, to shorten it a little. This was to prevent it riding out and scratching me. I have made sure to leave it long enough that I can retrieve the ends with tweezers should I wish to pull it out later.

When talking to the guys at hatsdirect before ordering mine, I was deciding between a fed reg and a dlx. we discussed the wire, and there was no mention of it only being present in the deluxe. Unless someone forgot to put it in your hat, EJ, it should be there, and that's where you find it.
