Well yeah ... I was just hoping to maybe convince 'im that it wasn't quite there yet. If that's what he wants to do with it, though ... Nothin' wrong with a hat you can really live in! :)

Ah, don't give up just yet. This styling is not that hard, but it does require some practice. And you know that you have arrived when you can take a hat that has some taper in it, but can style the taper out.

The hat you posted pics of, looks good enough in the open crowned state to yield a good Raiders fedora. I think you just need to work on it. Heck, you can't hurt the hat by doing so. Just don't use the steam too much.

Is the hat thick, and or stiff? That may be part of the problem. A stiff hat just wants to **** in when you put in the top crease-sometimes. If this is the case, you may have to use some steam to get that taper out that happens when the stiff felt pulls in the upper sides. Fedora

Not intending to lift this thread, but, did you receive the Lamode Block photos?

I just viewed them a few minutes ago. There should be some numbers on the bottom of the block. One of those numbers should be the crown height. So, do these numbers say 5 3/8 or 5 1/2 ? They should read 5 1/2. If so, the block looks decent, but does not look like the exact copy of what I sent him. It should be close enough though to keep your hat looking new and fresh. With that said, it is hard sometimes to judge any object in 2 D. To really know if this is the exact block that I sent him, I would have to put it next to one of my blocks to compare. The real test is when you reblock your hat, and then style it and compare to what you see on the film. Fedora

Fedora:

The only numbers are "23 1/8." Nothing else, other than "BACK" and "Lamode Hat Block Co."

I would be happy to forward the block to you, with funds to cover return shipping, etc. Or perhaps, I just need to discuss this with Richard.

Sincerely,

I think you need to tell him the block is supposed to be 5 1/2 inches tall instead of 5 3/8. Ask him to rectify it by sending you a spacer to put on the botton. This will bring it up to the needed 5 1/2. After looking at it again, it looks decent in overall shape, just a hair too short. Fedora

I think you just need some experience and practice. And you have the hat to do it on! Make it a fun deal instead of a sweating bullets deal. :D Patience is highly regarded in this quest. We have some real artists here when it comes to styling hats. Pagey and Tone stand out in my mind. I think either guy could take any hat and make it look good. But, I am sure both have put alot of time into this. The style job is almost as important as the block shape IMO.

And it may be that the close up pics are distorting the actual look of the hat. May look fine now. You would need a farther off pic to really for us to tell. Fedora
