Does this mean I can't steam clean it!?! :?
I'd run that by Fedora. Personally, I wouldn't do it.

That was a joke HJ. I only use steam for minor modifications. I've also found that using cold water will achieve the same effect as steam it just take longer for the modification to set.

Moderation in all things is my motto. (I rarely practice it, but I say it all the time.  ) Unless you use a bit of steam, you will not activate the stiffiner in the felt. Cold water won't do it, but just a bit of steam will. I use the steam cloud that comes off a pan of boiling water, so it's not a concentrated shot going at the hat. I apply just enough to feel the felt become pliable, then make my alterations as needed. No more, no less. Using to much will indeed cause a taper, but if used sparingly, there's no cause for alarm, or at least that's been my experience to date.

I think Fedora's approved way to shape a hat is to use Glenfiddich.

There were some local news reports about a man in the Columbus Mississippi area waving a dead chicken over a beaver felt hat. Hmmm.

I was thinking of getting one of those pressurized steam cleaners from the infomercials.

I actually have one of those (or a knock off from a garadge sale) but have been warry of trying it as it's pretty concentrated, though it has various nozles.
