Nice grey fedora BL! There's just something so very classy about a grey Indy. :D

I think it's time they add some grey Smilies to the collection.
Thanks for the compliment. I wouldn't mind a few grey smilies either

Still loving my Penman LC. I could not help but perceive some taper in the crown of it though (I know, I know LC is supposed to have taper). Have been fiddling with slight nuances of my bash non stop. Raised the center dent in the back no more than 1/4" (And probably closer to an 1/8th). All perceived taper has disappeared!!!! Amazing how small nudges here and there can completely change the look of a hat. I thought it was impossible but I love this hat EVEN MORE!!! I'll post pics later this weekend illustrating what I'm talking about. Thanks for the great hat John!!!! Look forward to further dealing with you. :TOH:

Daren- thanks again for the great pictures!

And I see what you mean about the differences between my Penman grey seaplane and LC with your Penman grey seaplane and LC. The crown of my seaplane looks taller than yours, and my LC crown looks shorter than yours.

Well, John says that you and I have VERY different head sizes. (I'm a size 7/ 56cm / 21 and 7/8 inches). My LC was made for someone else who returned it to John; it was the first Penman I received. When my Gray hat arrived, I was at first a bit surprised that it was shorter than my LC. But John explained that since he custom made the gray for me, the dimensions are better suited for my face. I agree. I think the crown height on my Raiders gray IS a better fit for my face than my LC. But I told John that when he makes my Raiders Rabbit Brown, that I want it to be the same height as my LC, because (I believe) it will seem more SA on my head that way. When I think of the Raiders Hero hat, I think of a fairly tall hat. My gray hat doesn't seem tall on me, it seems suitable for my face and therefore correct. But when I see my Raiders brown on my head, I don't want to see a hat that looks right for my face, I want it to look a hair tall, the way Ford's does on him (IMHO).

On a side note, my Herbert Johnson is too tall for my head and I've grown to hate it over the last year or so. (That's why I'm selling it!).

Yes, our head sizes are VERY different! I am a size 24 1/4".

And I totally get John's reasoning behind it... I guess that is why he is the master hatter! I couldn't even begin to figure stuff like that out! And for that John... :notworthy:

And even though the crown and brim of my grey Raiders Seaplane seems massive compared to my other hats, I love it! I am a fan of the taller crown and wider brim. But that does not mean I don't love my LC... I think it looks great on me! Which is probably the reason why I wear it sooo much.

Well, I can compliment my hatter, but I have no idea who made the suit.

I bought that suit about 13 years ago at a Swap Meet for $70!!! I had the pants taken in, and I've been wearing it on occasion ever since.

I'm not sure what vintage it is, though there was a tag with it that suggested it could have been as old as the 1950's. I LOVE that suit. Now I just need a double-breasted suit like Indy's. :)

I don't know what to say that hasn't been written already. I posted this sentiment on another site, and I have to say it again: This is THE BEST hat I own or have owned, and that includes quite a few, from a range of vintage to Adventurebilt. This isn't in any way to take away from other makers; just my opinion. Oak clearly immerses himself in these hats, and it shows. Fedora posted elsewhere a while back that the AB Indy hats mock the way he imagines the old HJs, so he may not be shooting for the moon in terms of the finish, and I've never held an ABD.
The finish on this Penman is smooth and even, and the whole thing feels like a little fortress built specially for my head  but fantastically elegant. Anything more, and I'll start to carry on, so I just want to say: Thanks John - :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Take a look at my you tube video. Watch how I crease the center dent in that video. Copy that. Then for the front pinch just grab it from the very front like you see in the movies.

That's a great looking hat you have there! Another fine job done by Mr. Penman!

And I agree with John, if you pick up your hat by the front pinch for a while it will become more defined. When it gets to the point that it looks good (well, it already looks good...) then you should pick your hat up by the brim.

Isn't it true you can put a hole in the front pinch from always grabbing it there?

I am sure you can if you do it enough... but that is why I said to start picking it up by the brim once the front pinch is defined.

Was wondering if you remember what block you used for Steerpike's hat. Looks more like a CS Hero than a CS Train Traveler to me. I sent my CS Grey to be reblocked on the Hero block and was wondering if it was the same.

Today it has been exactly 5 months since I ordered my hat and I would have had it by now if the postal service and customs weren't so busy :(

Well, at least that's what I think is causing my hat to be in transit for almost three weeks now :-k

This will mean I will probably have to pay the traditional hefty taxes and customs fees and that I won't have it before Christmas  The fees and taxes I can live with though, as I always calculate them into the costs of a purchased item, but why do they take so long to write up a bill and send it on its way?

Sorry for the rant guys, I just want my Penman I guess :[ The upside is that I'll probably still have some of COW's downtime to have pics taken ;)

Regards, Geert

It's my understanding that the CS Hero hat is based on a vintage block that Steve modified. The train traveller was blocked on an unmodified vintage block.

Terrific train traveller by the way! Follow John's advice for putting the crease back in and it will look absolutely beautiful.
