imo, you need to mate the center dent to the side dents closer. that'll bring out the 'humps' at the top. the back of the centre dent doesn't look too deep but if you find the sides are tapering, you may want to take the centre dent up (more shallow).

it's fun bashing a hat, no? :D

Yeah john...The center dent is too deep in the back...Bring it up in the back and push it down a lil more in the front. and the brim needs to swoop down more too.

John, if you have not done this yet, give it a try, the hat can take it - take it off throw it across the room or on the couch then jump on it, sit on it, I actually went further and popped out the crown and just used it as a punching bag for about 5 minutes, then balled it up a couple of times (just a loose ball, did not want any unneccesary creases) and popped it back to an open crown, then rebashed it, this hat is built for the Aussie outdoors, it can take a beating...here are my two Feds as shown earlier in the post:

Here's my first real Indy hat, a standard Federation IV!
I'm very happy about color, details and materials. I've tryed to shape it into a general Crystal Skull bash (this is my first open-crown hat). Opinions and suggestions are welcome! :D

PS. Sorry for the quite blurry and dark photos but, at the moment, I only have the MacBook webcam...

the front pinch and camel humps look 100000 times better now....dontcha think???

if that were mine, i'd make the center dent more like a 'dent' instead of a crease or fold. that may straighten up the sides a bit.....if you are going for a raiders look. then push the side dents back more (around the middle of the hat where the bow's knot is....and same distance on the other side). if you start poking the channel in.....you may get the sides even more straight.

hope that helps....your hat is looking better and better each time you post. akubra's are the best hats to experiment on as they take multiple bashes and are quite resiliant. have fun with it.

Thanks.
New poster/longtime member and lurker chiming in...

I ordered my FedIV Standard back the weekend before the premiere (Sunday the 18th, actually), and got it this past Monday (the 2nd), so that'd be right on the two-week mark. Not too shabby, from Australia to Virginia USA in 10 working days.

I have taken pics, both straight out of the box and post-bash (generic Raiders style, not intentionally replicating any particular scene), but they're on my camera at home, so I'll have to post them later. I am ENORMOUSLY impressed with the quality and value of this hat, and the bash was so easy I wondered if I was missing something. I've gotten nothing but compliments from it, and while it felt a little strange at first wearing it (I don't usually wear hats), I've worn it every day since I got it and am rapidly getting used to it. This is a NICE hat, and the low cost and reputed durability just make things that much better.

I haven't ordered yet. Still trying to decide between the regular and deluxe.

I bought a couple of vintage hats on eBay and have been experimenting on the crease so I don't mess up my Fed when it does come...

If I could go back...I'd order a deluxe. Just because the texture is far smoother than the regular.

Scot, That looks great!!! Way better than before!!! You're almost there. The left side is dented in a bit differently than the right....make the right side look like the left side and that will fix the kindof uneaven look at the top.

The one other thing I would do is get the brim to swoop down a little more in the front too, but you dont have too if you dont want to. If you're having a hard time....use a little bit of steam.

Federation IV vs Previous Federation

Received Federation IV Deluxe Friday. Ordered 61 whereas earlier Feds (Standard) ordered were 60's. While originally large on me, they all work down to size in short order.

The fawn color on the Deluxe is very nice and makes a nice hat. However, be aware that the crown height on these is considerably shorter than previous models. Personally, I think the crown on the size 60's now is too short, but that's my opinion.

Have not posted pics because the first set of comparison pics will give you the right idea.

more hat fun

Well yeah...That was the idea...The screen used hats had a 5 1/2 inch crown. Thats what these have. The old feds had a 5 3/4 crown I believe.

John Falcon,

Do you have a round oval head? A round oval head will stretch a reg. oval crown sideways and certainly make it look wider and squatter, same way that a long oval head is really needed to get that perfect Raiders silhouette (as it stretches the crown lengthwise and keeps it nice and straight-sided.)

woohoo! Got mines today too! Actually, I ordered it last Thurs. and asked for EMS shipping. I thought it would come around Monday or Tuesday at the latest. To my surprise when I get home Sunday afternoon, I see a "Failed Delivery Attempt" notice on my door....I thought "WTH?" I didn't know they delivered on Sundays!!!!
So, after missing the postman on Monday and Tuesday, I finally went to the post office to pick itup..

This is my first fedora...too nice to be called a "HAT"...
It looks really awesome..hard to beleive the way it starts out and what it will look like after bashing it...

It fits me "just right". I do need to add a little bit of the foam strip to get a little tighter fit. I ordered a size 60.

Anyway, hope to work on the bash some time during the week. using some of the pix and suggestions on this board.

well...I got a replacement 56 in dk brown, but it was too small!! I just sold it, so I'm on the fence on either another Tawny in a 57 (I'll stick the foam in there until it shrinks up-hopefully it'll shrink up enough!) -or trying one of the Christy's in the beige color.

I know you've been fighting this dragon for a while citRon, so allow me to ask a question....have you just been sending them a size request, or have you ever supplied them with your actual head measurement and asked them to match a hat to that supplied measurement?

That's what I've done for years, and have never had a sizing issue with an Akubra, regardless of the model.

well I guess that's why you're a 'knower of things'!

-I had not thought of that. i am stupid. my wife's been sayin' it for years, now she has outside confirmation!!

I will email Ron at HD, and do just that- also, am I correct that he can make/manipulate one into a long oval?

May I make a slight additional suggestion to complement Michaelson's? One thing Fedora mentions when you send him measurements for an AB is that you measure your head 3 times with measuring tape and then send him all 3 measurements. Perhaps you might want to do the same when sending your measurements to Ron so he has more information with which to work.

best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte

thanks, I'll do that. Something else I'm going to do- measure my best fitting hat, which is (easy now fellas) my DP wool LC 'souvenier' hat with it's 'unknown material' sweatband! This thing fits perfect. The size says '7-7 1/8' on the tag. I'm going to try to measure the inside of the sweatband on it accurately.
btw- anybody know what that thing is made of? -the sweatband. It's not leather, it feels almost like cardboard of some type, but 'squishy'. I've worn it for hours at a time in the past before I knew any better, and it looks the same as it did 19 years ago!

From Ron's Hats Direct website referring to the FedIV.
Crown height is 5 5/8ths inches. Made from an original wooden hat block set which have not been used for over 35 years.
Some more information for folks.

citRon,

Your best bet would be to use either of the following methods:

1) Use a piece of non stretch string and wrap around your noggin about 1-3cm above your ears and then measure it out flat.

2) Do the same with a dress makers tape (if you have one).

And for either method, use Nebraska's suggestion of 3 measurements.

I have used both and they worked for me.

I double checked and it's a "Regular Oval" shaped head. :?

You can 'convince' the Fed line to become long oval if you use a hat retainer (some call them 'stretchers) in your hat when you're not wearing it. It will eventually be trained into the long oval shape over time.
