OK guys. Being new to the Indy thing, (not fan wise, just gear wise) I have a related question for Fedora or whoever wants to answer. I don't really understand blocking and all of the technical jargon you guys are using regarding the hats but I am learning. When I purchase one of these at the stated prices, will it be pinched and all of that and ready to wear right out of the box? If so, the prices are GREEAAAT!!!

Please Hurry!! I am anxious!!

Yeah, bowjunkie, you'll be happy with anything Fedora puts his touch on. He does some great work! I've had him work on several of my fedoras before he surprised us with his opening his own shop. I'm eagerly awaiting one for myself!

I think Fedora's got a long list of fans waiting for one of his hats. I can imagine a fleet of hats going around with the adventurebuilt logo inside of them. Quality is quality, and Fedora's hats promise to be, as they say so often around here, "top notch."

I have a list of names of the folks that want one as soon as I get up and running full blast. I can always put anyone else interested on it, and will make the hats going by the date they asked. I am not taking deposits, I figure you guys can use that money for something else, without me tying it up while you wait. regards, Fedora

I found something that may interest you. It is from the correct period as well. 1937

The stupid website will not let you access the page without taking all the steps. Go to "Enjoying Glenfiddich" at the top of the page, then click "Vintage single malts" on the bottom left. Then go to "Read more about The Glenfiddich Rare Whisky collection" and click Glenfiddich 1937. It is not as fun this way, but important that you get to the right bottle for this to make sense.

An update. I just placed my first order for the Argentina felt. For now, I am only gonna have the brown in stock since this is the color that most folks want. I will be able to get the gray when someone orders one, or the light pecan color. I was assured that I would not have to wait very long, as the logistics are better now, and my supplier has finally worked it out. Not an easy task he says. Not only do you need to be bilingual, but also bi-cultural in order to understand these South American folks. So, I think the last link is finally on the chain. It should not be long now. By the way, the brown I chose, was the best brown that they offer. It has bronze undertones to it in the sunlight, but reddish brown in the shade. I like the color alot. Different than the other offerings. I may add another brown later on that I liked too, but had to pick just one this time, so I picked the one that I liked. Regards, Fedora

The colour and its hues sound intriguing =P~ . Please put me on the list....I really want a new hat to replace my Cat Scratch Special  .

Out of respect for Fedora (and the rest of you), I won't hijack this thread - I'll take my tangent out to Lao Che's table:

Looking forward to updates as well. I'm putting away pennies for a real hat someday, and until then 'Fed by Fed' is etched into my wishlist.

Sounds great Fedora,

If this brown is the one that you think is the best for a Raiders hat, then that is good enough for me! Just let me know when you need the money.

Updat. Here are the color swatches the sweatband company sent me. I chose the color that was the closest to the original HJ sweat, a medium brown. It is the second one from the top left corner. Antique smooth roan. Check out the other pic on the site to see a close up. That ostrich leather is wild, but will not be offered. http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/roan_swatches.html

The liners were finally shipped out today. :D Some advice for anyone wanting to source materials for high quality hats. Meditation, and anger management training is highly recommended. Coming from the cabinet business, with sources literally beating down your door for a sale, this has been a wake up pill for me. This is indeed the strangest business that I have ever seen. If a businessman dies, and goes to hades, his punishment would be trying to conduct business with some of these guys. The trick is knowing which supplier to call, and I have just about worn out trial and error. But, I think I am finally set, and the bodies are due here in 3 weeks or less. Once they clear customs, I will make a post to let everyone know who has ordered a hat, that the ball is rolling. Oh, I have two different scripts to offer on the sweats. One will be in the safari font, with Fortune and Glory Fedora under the Adventurebilt. The other one is more traditional looking with Adventurebilt Hat Co. , then under it, "handmade" and then under it, Fine Fur Felt. This will be in the font similiar to what HJ used on their crests. Real classy looking for those who don't want the obvious Indy link on their hat. Fedora

You think of everything. While you may feel like you're in H-E-double toothpicks, I think I've died and gone to heaven. This is the first gear item I've been really excited about for quite a while. Only reason I haven't preordered yet is that I want to nail my hat size, and so far I haven't been able to do that. I think I'm an extra long oval. Measured my hat opening, and it was something like 6 3/8 x 8 1/2.

I have to say...You know its becoming an issue around the house when my wife asks, "So, is your Indy buddy, ready yet?" :? I love how wives have a way of saying things! ...To which, I say "No honey..the last hurricane, slowed the arrival of the Argeninian felts, there's still some discussion about sweatbands and the block maker hasn't delivered all the sizes yet" To which see says..Oh.. that's too bad :( . Funny thing is, I thinks she's serious....not long ago she exclaimed "Oh Rob...another hurricane is headed for Florida!

I'm probably going to show my ignorance of hat making, which is why I buy them, not make them. But how dependent is the bash of the hat upon the block? In other words, could you take a single block and be able to bash both a Raiders style and Last Crusade style hat from the same block or does the block have more of an influence on the bash? I know I originally said a Raiders bash, but if possible, I think I actually prefer the Last Crusade style. That's probably heresy in these parts, but oh well...

Posted: Fri Oct 08, 2004 12:16 am
by IndianaGuybrush
Never you mind that "heresy" nonsense, the motto here is best described "to each his(or her) own." The block is integral to the Raiders or even LC look of the IJ fedoras. The block is what the hat is shrunk and shaped over, and it's what gives the fedoras thier no-taper sides. The bashes themselves can be put into any hat, but they will only look "Indy" on a properly blocked hat. to my knowledge the more popular LC bash is basically a Raiders hat with a much less severe front pinch. Instead of being pinched all down the front of the hat its pinched at the top and then allowed to spread out.

Posted: Fri Oct 08, 2004 12:43 am
by Indiana Jerry
IGB - Just to make sure I understand the answer to the question, then, the same block should work equally well for both a Raiders bash and an LC bash, right?

Posted: Fri Oct 08, 2004 11:27 am
by IndianaGuybrush
Yep. The block supplies the straight sides, then you just bash away to whatever movie scene you want that has a straight sided fedora.

Yeah, I think the hat was a 7 5/8, and it fit well enough at first, but eventually I think I shrank it somehow. Every hat I've ever owned, I've ended up ripping out the sweatband to get it to fit better.

I've always been able to wear off-the-rack clothes, but I think I need a custom-made hat. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have a hat big enough that I could wear it on the back of my head, a la Indy at the campfire in TOD, and yet have it still come far enough forward in front to not look like it's pushed back. I don't even know if that's possible, but to me, that would be a perfect fit. My hats have never seemed to quite cover enough of my head. I guess I'm hoping for a fit kind of like the famous side shot of the Raiders fedora in the Marhala bar, where it rides all the way back almost to his neck.

Don't take those measurements to the bank, by the way, Fedora. Tthat's just for memory, and my measuring methods were less than scientific. Let me get it nailed down exactly. Thanks for your generous offer! I was praising you to the wife yesterday, in preparation for the big hat purchase.

The best way for me would be to measure the circumference so I get the size right. The long oval or long long oval may present more of a problem, but if the hat you have been wearing maintains the shape of your head at the sweat area, it would be a good indicator of what you will need. regards Fedora

Fedora,

Do you think you can post pics of examples of both of the scripts that you will offer on the sweats. I have been thinking about your desription of them and I can't decide. I was hoping that a visual image would sway me one way or the other. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Glad to do so. Here is the classy looking one.http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/fern_script.html

And here is the original design.http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/new ... cript.html

The original design is pure Indy, and for us more adventuresome types. The classy one, looks like a true fine mens hat on the inside, and suitable for us older folks.  And, I might add, that since these hats will be totally handmade, it needs to be noted on the hat. I like em' both, and it just depends on which one you want. I had a couple of folks tell me, offline that I should not make it appear so Indy. So, this is the result. I know what I like, but, everyone is not like me, thank goodness. Thanks for the interest. Fedora
