Michaelson,

I had seen the hat in this thread, and asked the who-made-it question.

I was sent a PM by the hat's owner, which included the reason for his not revealing it in the thread, and we cleared it up privately.

I am supposing that this was handled properly up to that point (?).

Mornin' all,

Thought I lend my novice hand to sculpting the coveted SOC lid from a Henry re-blocked by the Right Honourable Mr John Penman.....

To be honest I don't know if I've got anything like the SOC, or just another generic Raiders bash..I do know that it needs more fullers on it and general abusing though.

It's obviously not up to the 'qualitay' of the likes of Jason's, Mitch's and of course Holts, but I had a go... :D

Cheers dudes!! Means a lot coming from such SOC connoisseurs like yourselves :D

I'll probably keep working it (like you do). I have to say in addition, that this Henry is really tough!! I've done all kinds of stuff to it, including stretching it over a chair leg to get the various lumps and bulges.....I don't think I could tear the felt if I wanted to...Not recommended by any means, but I practically swung on it to get the stretch.... :o

Who'd've thunk it? :o :D

I'd love to Dave, but given what I've already put it through...I think this lid would beat me in a fight...I'd definitely have to 'tool-up'.. ;)

One of the little "tricks" to do to a Cairo style hat is to flatten the brim along the right side of the hat all the way to the back. In other words, take out any brim curl or flanging starting at your right ear going all the way to the very back of the hat. Leave a little on the left side. It helps give the hat that "worn out" look to it.

I wouldn't iron the brim flat.I would steam the brim and pull it flat. from the front right side to about half way point of the back.

Wow, thats a real nice job that you've done Ian, looks great. Just needs some fullers. That'll give it that look.
I gotta take another pic of my SOC HJ, I've done it up all fullers, love wearing this out and about.

Which right side, your actual right or the right side as you look at it front on, (which would be the left), don't wanna sound stupid here, but figured what the jey. :anxious:

"NO Your Right... YOUR OTHER RIGHT!!!"
Couldn't let that one get by without using it. :whip:

Yes, Croft. Like John said. The "right" side being the side without the bow. This is very evident when you first see Indy and Marion in the street of Cairo. You get a clear, eye level view of the right back side of the hat as they make the turn down the street before the monkey runs away. (RUN SNITCH!! Go tell your Cobra masters!!!)
This little add helps give the Cairo hat that "tuckered out" look. It doesn't take many hot summer days down here in Georgia to get my hat lookin' like that.
Sorry for the delayed response.

I have noticed that when I dust a hat up for the Cairo look, I think that I have over done it. When I take a picture of the hat, it looks like there ain't enough. I concluded that the film hat must have looked incredibly nasty in person while they were filming just so the hat looked the way it did on film. Even the "behind the scenes shots" of the hat looks the same as the "final cut" look. Definitely the ultimate in work hats.

The work done on these hats in this post is a testament to fans wanting to get the look. All are great works. :TOH:

I haven't had the time to read this whole thread, so, it may have already been discussed but is it the camera angle or is the hat bashed off-center? I don't mean "the turn", even after the turn, it looks like the front crease lines up to the his left on the hat making the right dent somewhat larger. Some pics of others SOC hats looks like they did the turn and then pinched the front dead center or even to the other side. So, is it just the camera angle or no?

It doesn't look as though the hat is bashed "off-centre", but it looks just like Harrison put the hat on "off-centre". Look at the position of the bow in the two photos. The bows are in the same place relative to the crease, just the hat on Harrison has moved to the right (his left).

WOW, Holt...I`ve seen it before but your hat still is so point by point accurate...great job, sir, great job. My personal opinion is that Jason`s hat (Fedoraraider) is the be all to end all in Cairo look-a-likes, but, WOW, you are definitely tied up there with him. Great attention to detail and especially to post it with a screenshot to compare..that is confidence! :TOH:

There are a few things you have to do to achieve the look of the SoC fedora. I'd always wondered how the SoC film hat had such deep side dents, etc. The trick is that you have to work the felt and brim, and work it so well that it can barely hold its shape, like the film hat. The film hat looked that way because of heat, perspiration and some artificial distressing. The fullers earth, etc., is just the icing on the cake, so to speak, but the preliminary work is the most important. You have to look at how the film hat got that way, and then proceed accordingly. At the point where the SoC scenes were filmed, it WAS a worn and battered hat. Having pure rabbit felt is essential.

As much as I love the SoC hat, I could never bring myself to punish a hat to within an inch of its life, unless I got hold of a brown fedora that was close to that condition already.

Been awhile since I posted a pic of my HJ SOC, bought from a fellow gear head way back when, had Fedora block it SOC back before AB was even a thought (maybe :- ).

I wear it mowing the lawn now and hen to get them swaet stains, hit with some fullers.
