indy89, what is the texture of your Dlx like. Can you compare it against the Imperial felt quality that is used in the standard Fed?

Also is it soft? Firm? Does it hold a bash easily? I am thinking of one of these and are chasing some more info.

Thanks! It's actually gone to a new home and I hope the new owner will be very happy with it.

Like I said I've another coming and I'm looking forward to bashing that too... 8)

Recieved my email today and and my hat should be here in less than two weeks. What appears to be the last item I am ordering for the time being appears to be the first that is going to arrive.

I'm with you there! I went to a sneek peek last night at 7:30, and I was praying my Fed would come in yesterday. Nope. Came in today. So, I had to choose between no gear, or with my Dorkman Pathetic, so I went sans gear.

Having said that...on to my review:

Wowzers! Man this thing is right in so many ways. I got a dark brown in exchange for the way too big Tawny (see previous posts).
The brim is cut perfectly. The felt feels soft, brim is floppy but firm enough to hold a shape. I steamed for less than one minute and got a great bash. As soon as the steam hits the felt, it turns into play dough. As soon as it cools, which is very quick, it's firmed up and holds the shape. Compared to the old Feds, there is no comparison. Sizewise, I got the new one in my normal 56, and it fits just like the old 56's.
Once again, Ran and Hats Direct service is outstanding.

Hi all,
I received the Fed IV that I ordered for my father on May 19. It was too big for him, but fit me just right. :D I'll order him another. I can't say enough about this hat. It is beautiful. It is very soft, but holds the bashing easily. I wear it every day, all day. It's the most comfortable hat I've ever owned. If you're still undecided about buying one of these, I'd say go for it. I had also ordered a Peters Bros. in the soft rabbit, with an Idol Grab bash. It arrived on the 19th. It's a great hat too, but it has a pretty high crown. I know, I know, I'll get used to it. I took some side by side pics and a few others.

If you can tell, the Peters Bros. is a little lighter than the Fed IV. I think I like the darker Fed IV. Let me know what you think. (please, no comments about the handsome devil in the pics. )

Dude- you need to check on that- I'm in Kentucky, and I get my hats from them in exactly 1 week to the day from when it is shipped. You might want to take a look at your mailman next time, see if he's sportin' a fedora!

Since you have the Fed now, how about bashing that PB into a C-crown to take up some of that height? The PB color looks great, btw.

I GOT IT TODAY!!! I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH!! It's a fed regular. My hat size is a 56 but I ordered a 57 like ron told me to and the fit is perfect. The size is about a half size big which is dead on. I can wear it as is but I put a little piece of foam in the back so it fits a bit tighter. I'm sure I'll have to take it out in a few weeks. Here are the pics...sorry for the blurry one. This is the first fedora I've ever bashed so lemme know what yall think. I'll get pics of it on me soon.

I just got my FedIV Deluxe yesterday! WOW! Ron and HatsDirect really hit a home run with this hat. It's darker than the AB, but honestly, I like the color of this hat. I've been looking for a darker brown hat for a while, and this fits the bill nicely. It's a bit stiff out of the box, but I've been working it with my hands, loosening up the felt. I'll get a pic or two up when I'm done tweaking it to my taste. Funny thing is, I keep wanting to get a hat specifically to put the tight Raiders pinch and bash into, but they all come out looking like binkmeister hats with are more relaxed pinch! I think this hat will have to "evolve" to get to that state!

Post by morganswift »

binkmeisterRick, I found the key was getting an atomizer spray, filling it with cold water and then spritzing (is that a word?) the whole front where you have the relaxed pinch. Go in when it's wet and squeeze really hard and work the felt. Leave to dry naturally and voila! My new Fed IV came today and I got a sharp pinch in about an hour using this method. Trust me
I'll post a pic soon.

Any California Fed IV owners out there? How long did it take to get yours? Just looking for an average at this point since I just ordered one a couple days ago.

morgan, I know HOW I need to do it, I just don't know if I can BRING myself to do it! I like the look, but most of my bazillion fedoras and hats take on the character of the binkmeister (that's me  ) which frequently have a slightly looser pinch. Think Raiders/LC hybrid. It works for me and looks good. I keep wanting a hat for the purpose of having one SoC hat, but my fingers just haven't gotten to actually bash it that way yet. I'm thinking as the hat breaks in and gets naturally beat up a bit, then it will start to morph into a SoC hat.
morganswift

Post by morganswift »

Aha! I get you. It's a very personal thing and it sounds like you have your own personal bash going on and THAT IS INDY! Was he fussing over what bash to get? Did he mind when he just plopped his hat down BRIM DOWN on the table in the diner when he first met Mutt? No. He lives with his hat. It's his companion but it isn't his master. You've got completely the right attitude...

Cheers
Alex

But you have to use an atomizer with cold water to get the SOC bash

I might as well post this here and hopefully you guys can answer

1) Is this hat "close enough" to Indy's that a) no one in the general public would be able to tell the difference and b) it could very well have been chosen as a hat for the movie?

2) Can you tell me your experience about sizing? If I like a hat that is snug but on the loose side, and if I am afraid of it shrinking what kind of size should I order? To be specific my head seems to measure 23.5 inches on a loose wrap around with the tape

To answer Blueoakleyz questions.

The man who made the hats for indy IV said that if you want to buy a fed that is like indys without the 1 year wait....this is the hat to buy.

It is one of the most accurate indy fedoras you can buy!!

Blueoakleyz, my experience with sizing is to measure firmly (not tightly) in cm and order that size. My first Fed IV was a 59 after measuring 58 (the advice was too go up a size) and it was too big, needing all the foam tape for a good fit. But my new Fed IV is a 58 and although a touch big out of the box it's settling nicely. Hope that helps.

Ok thanks.

If I measure as TIGHTLY as possible I fall between a 58 and a 59. THat's not fun though.
Firmly but not tight I measure between 59-60 so I think my best bet is a 60

I'm a 56 and ordered a 57. All I had to do to get a perfect fit was put a lil piece of foam in the back...It honestly feels better every time I wear it.

I ordered a 58 for my father and was going to order a 59 for myself. When the 58 came, my dad looked like Citron's picture when he got his. (Way down over his ears.) His head had measured 22 3/4. I wear a 23 1/4. Luckily, it fit me perfect. Had I ordered the 59, it would have been way too big on me. I'll now order a 57 for my dad.

I wear a 22 1/4" or 56.5cm. Would the 56 or 57 be best for a good fit?
