I have a question for BendingOak: The Raiders hat on the Indy page of your website. Is that Raiders hat a Beaver or Rabbit? And how much stiffer is the Beaver than the Rabbit? I've always like that stiff feel to Beaver hats and wondered if the same things can be achieved in the Rabbit. And will the Rabbit get that nice, faded, light brown tone like on the website of you Raiders hat when it has been used? I apologize for how many questions I have when I make these question posts.

I'm not sure if you mistaking dence with stiff. I would call my hats stuff as I ask my felters to use the least amount of stiffener as possible. I can always add to any felt at my shop but it's almost impossible to remove it once it's in. The Penman Indy hats are both rabbit and beaver.

Yep. Now is the Rabbit felt really soft? I have a fed deluxe IV and it is pretty soft(in terms of how it feels). Is the pic of the Raiders hat on your site a Rabbit or Beaver? Thank you for answering my questions.

depends on the photo?

as for soft???? do you mean finish? you mean smooth to the touch? :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: hold onto your socks.

Im sorry, I mean does your Rabbit Raiders hats have a very smooth surface? Or is it like a Fed Deluxe IV that doesnt have a very smooth finish, because it is pretty slippery when you grab onto it. Is it like as soft and slippery as a federation deluxe 4? And the pic on your website I am talking about is the very first pic on the Indy's Closet page. I'm sorry for the way I am describing things to you, I seem to not be able to describe things as well right now.

If by soft you are asking about the finish, then assuming my Cairo is typical of the finish on other rabbit felt Penman hats they are extremely well finished. The felt is not as dense and tightly felted as beaver fur, but not coarse like many "fur felt" hats. The finish is close to the smoothness of beaver, but there's a noticeable difference.

It is much better than the regular Fed IV, and even quite a bit better than the Heritage felt in the Fed IV Deluxe.

If by "soft" you are referring to the floppiness of the brim then John's rabbit felt is probably a bit floppier than beaver, which is a denser felt. I describe the felt on a beaver hat as more "moldable", i.e. you can push it around and it will hold a shape, than rabbit, which tends to spring back

Not sure if that helped baddates1, but knowing and owning like fedoras, I believe your description is spot on and perfect describers for quality made hats.

That's exactly how good beaver and rabbit hats SHOULD respond.

If memory serves me that one hat is beaver.

I'm not sure what you mean but my hats are superior then any akubra and that's me putting it in the modest way I can.

I like your hats far better then Fed's. I wasn't questioning the quality, I was just wondering about the feel and look. Thanks again for answering my questions. And sorry for not describing them so well.

Just got word from John Penman that my Raiders Fedora in Beaver (with a twist) is ready and should be in my possession by Friday.

Stay tuned to this thread because when he called me to tell me it's done and will be shipped, he was extra excited about this hat.

It will be his first to be produced by him with this NEW unique style and blend....if I understand him correctly.

I think being able to see the hat will not have as much effect as being able to touch the hat.

The way John explained it to me is although it's a beaver felt hat, it feels and moves more like a lighter rabbit felt.

And it must look slightly different to the trained eyes...so I am sure those of you on here will be able to note some differences.

I just can't wait. It's going to be my first Indy hat.....& pretty sure my last.

Hello all, well I've received my AB Legacy on Wednesday of last week and with the aid of my wife we video taped me opening it. I only hope it plays better here than it does on photo bucket, we'll see. Looks like I can't get it to work so I posted a link, fingers crossed.
It would have been posted sooner but with COW being down for couple of days, while the powers that be (Dalexs and others) do some repairs on a minor fubar.

First off: this hat is butter soft, felt so smooth in my hands and while I have hats with a turn, not as pronounced as this one, took me while to get used to it, that and some fiddling to get it where I'm happier with the way it looks.
Heck this is the first fedora I've owned that the wind the other day blew the front up (but not off). Johns fit was perfect, my hairs a littlie shorter so I had to put one piece of hat foam to tighten till my hair comes back in.
The stitching is most defiantly different, used to not seeing it, but after awhile you don't even notice it.
Pic's to come in the next post from me. Soon.

Thank you John, if you need a review for your site, just let me know how and when. This hat is beautiful.

John, just to be clear, the new beaver felt brim won't move around in the wind will it? It'll still feel substantial and offer protection from the elements?

Says the same as all AB "Adventurebilt Hat Co. Handmade, Fine Fur Felt"
The color is a much lighter brown than my other AB's which are a dark brown.
