Well, if you MUST know . . .
The next up is a custom job. Since I have a number of Indy sized hats, and now three "Penman" hats, which are a bit smaller, this one will be just a
teeny bit smaller than a standard "Penman", and will be steel in color, with a light gray ribbon (as opposed to a darker, usually black ribbon). And it will have a welted edge. So, everything about this hat will be somewhat new. I have two grays (granite and charcoal, but not this steel gray, which apparently has a bit more of a blue hue to it), and I don't have any hats (not Penman hats anyway) with a welted edge. And none of my hats have a ribbon that is lighter in color than the felt. And while this well be no "stingy" brimmed hat, it will certainly be the smallest hat, all around, that John will have made for me.
Soon after, John will be making me an Indy-sized fedora, off his CS block, with all the usually CS styling, EXCEPT the color. It will be either Camel with a matching ribbon, OR Whiskey, with a lighter, gold ribbon. And I may have him put a bound edge on it. I want it to resemble the color scheme of the hat worn by Daniel Day Lewis in
There Will Be Blood, which is not a Fedora (his hat looks more like a drill sargeant's hat) but still a neat looking hat.
So, there you go . . .
I will post pics (OBVIOUSLY) as they arrive.

Daren, Just a FYI. I can't put a welted edge on a dimensional cut brim.

Hey david_h, that is one fine looking lid, now all you need is a trench caot and a lovely lady on your arm to complete the look.
Nice to finally see a Casablanca. Looks good.

Do you mean you can't put a
bound edge on a dimensional cut brim? Like for an Indy style hat? Because I'm assuming my steel gray, which will have a
welted edge, will be non-dimensional, like a Penman. But I was considering having a
bound edge for the CS style. If that's not possible, then when you make the hat, I suppose I'll have to choose between cutting the brim non-dimensionally and adding the bound edge, or leaving it dimensional, with no bound edge . . .
Does that sound right?

Additionally, I guess you don't do welted edges OR bound edges on dimensionally cut (Indy style) brims, right?

I was talking about putting a welted edge on a dimensional cut brim like a indy hat yes. The felt would bunch up at the transition point. I'm not sure if I could do a bound edge on one because I haven't tried.

Well, no worries about the welted edge, because the steel gray custom will have a non-dimensional brim.

As to the bound edge on the "Indy" hat . . . I guess we'll discuss that later.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'd been wanting to get a hat from John for a while and I'm really happy the idea came to fruition.
The way John makes his welted brims is very distinctive, different to others I have on vintage and other custom hats. I really like the way he makes the stitching part of the effect. I think it gives the hat a very classy look.

You know, I don't believe in accepting anything, regardless of what it is, if I know that it is not mine. But, I have to admit, should a Pennman arrive at my door, especially a 'Casablanca' or a 'Skull' and the puppy fit, I might have other ideas about honesty

yeah....sob story huh?

LOL!! well here's the situation: ordered two hats at the same time back in november. Both in Beaver. One is a gray Train hat. The other was a brown Indy hat. Was pretty sure I ordered a CS hat. Even checked my correspondence with John. When John sent me an email at the beginning of March, he sent me the bill for both hats, both beaver, but there was no specification as to style. No big deal I thought. I sent in my check and a few weeks later, my hat arrives. Well, I opened the box and the hat was in one of Johns gorgeous hat boxes!! Now, I never ordered a hat box, so I thought, wow, cool, this must be what comes with a Penman! then I noticed the bash was a Raider's bash. It was definitely my size! And there was even one of those "Like #### It's Yours" card with my name on it inside the sweatband. I started comparing the felt of this hat to one of John's older hats I have and this new hat feels less responsive and less dense than the other. So I looked at the sweat bands.......the old one says "Beaver Felt" and this new one says "Fine Fur Felt." I was up for hours examining these hats, thinking, "Nah, he couldn't have made a mistake. Maybe this is how the beaver felt he uses now feels. The other hat is much older. And maybe he doesn't print "Beaver Felt" on his new sweatbands anymore." On and on I racked my brain trying to figure things out then finally I just emailed John close to 1 A.M. about all this. He emailed this morning asking for the number inside the sweatband. I replied and I haven't heard from him yet. So meanwhile, I'm drooling over this hat that may or may not be mine, unable to wear it.

I ABSOLUTELY agree with you!! I certainly do NOT want anything I didn't pay for or that is not rightfully mine. The hat AND box remain safe inside the shipping box it came in.

Sammy sorry For not getting back to you sooner but what'd to talk to you over the phone to get to the bottom of things. I'm human and could easily have made a mistake.
All my hats come with a penman hat box. That's standard coming out of my shop. I have changed my stamps from having one for beaver and one for rabbit felt. This way one sweatband for both types of felt. I'll call you in the morning and hopefully we can get to the bottom of things.
John
And good night all.

Hat looks great, Sammy. Congratulations! But I have to ask: the brown hat from the first set of photos is not the same hat you're wearing in the new pics, right? The first Indy hat appears to be a Raiders, and the hat on your head appears to be a CS. The crease is totally different. So, what, if I may ask, wound up happening exactly? (Just curious. And I agree, John's customer service is superb!)

Yep, it falls all on me. I got a little raiders on his CS hat. Just for and FYI. I could make someone using my CS block and make a raiders hat and I could do the reverse. That's how close they are.
Again sorry about going all raiders on you Sammy.

No worries at all John. The hat is perfect both ways. Just glad it was a simple matter of bashing and not a confusion in work orders or shipping or something like that.
