And here it is! My newest Penman!
I loved my Brown Raiders in beaver so much that I simply asked John to replicate it in Charcoal!
And he did an OUTSTANDING job! (I never doubted for a moment that he wouldn't!)
Thanks Daren. I like the adventurer and gentlemen. Very cool my friend.
I call this one,
"The Adventurer and The Gentleman"
Just like with a brown Indy hat (or any hat for that matter) it's interesting to see how many different colors the charcoal can take on with different lighting. In the first pic, it looks rather blue, in the second very gray, in a couple of the pics in the collage, it takes on a little brown.
Anyway . . .
I could go on and on about what a brilliant hatter and good friend and fine craftsman and great artist John is, or how he excels at customer satisfaction and making sure that all the elements that come with a difficult order are just right. But I won't. I'll simply let the hat(s) speak for themselves.
Once again, so very pleased,
Daren Henry Wilkerson

Does any one have a SOC penman order coming up any time soon? I don't really hear much about this hat and I'm interested in seeing pictures of John's current version. I've heard that he has made some modifications since the one that he made for Mitch.

There have been a few but to be honest with everyone. I try and talk customers out of it. If someone asks for a idol grab scene hat, I try and crease it the best I can to that scene for the customer. After they handle and wear the hat for some time, it will change a little.Thats why I never really crease my own Raiders hat to any one scene . Now take that bit of information and apply it to the Cairo hat. the extra time and money going into a hat that if you wear it, it will change over time. I want to make a Raiders hat as close to the movie hat but I want to make it better. using better material, and crafting it better than it was. As to be used like is was meant to be not just put on a shelf like a prop.
I hope that helps.

Good point, John. I guess if one wears one of your generic Raiders hats and wear it as it was meant to be worn, then it will eventually turn out looking like a very nice SOC. The hat would look much more authentic and one that reeks of many adventurous stories to explain its present state of being. I guess it is a look that must be earned and not artificially accelerated.

I'm not against someone artificially doing that. Not at all but to make a good hat it must have a few things. It takes time to make the hats the way I do. Then after the hat is done ( or part way done) and do things to the hat to make it look like the Cairo hat. It really breaks the heart.
The other thing is I don't make the most screen accurate Indy hats. I make them as a screen accurate as possible but I make them better. The raiders hat wasn't made well. The attention to detail wasn't there. As a well made hat is.
ducks for cover. Don't get me wrong , I love the Raiders hat, it's just not a well made hat.

THIS is a really cool hat! What exactly are the colors of the felt and ribbon? Methinks I've a new candidate for my next hat. (I want to go green Penman next, but may push it back in the queue!)
Awesome hat, Darthinvictus! As you can see, I'm rather smitten.

PS "Pennyfarthing"? What is this a reference to? The color?

The felt is natural and the ribbon is vintage dark brown.
John should remember the specks..... he almost kept it himself.

Thanks John, Your skills go beyond what I imagined, This hat is PERFECT in every way. Stitching is perfect, ribbon is perfect, everything is so well done that perfect is the only word to describe it. I can't wait to show you guys. It looks to me just like the Raven bar scene when Indy is first talking to Marion about the worthless bronze medallion
Thanks again John

Scott, technically, you should be calling him "Volume Knob".
Tremolo is the variation of volume, while Vibrato is the variation of pitch (which is what a "whammy-bar" does)......wait a minute, this isn't the Fender forum........
