Hey guys. Nothing new really, although I got all sorts of interesting inside info on the business. Right now, I will drop out of sight for a bit to work some long days in gettng out existing orders as well as making hats to send out west. One is Fords. I will get pics soon. This is latest word from my contact.
I am generally successful at these
endeavors, and our timing couldn't be better, with only pre-production
underway and everyone involved getting back in the 'excitement' mode for
this project, plus so many things still up in the air for logistics, we
are staged to be a great position to do this. I love it.
So, I feel pretty good about it. I spent the last few days reworking my Raiders blocks, as something came up that brought my attention to one facet of the block. Nothing big, but essential, especially if you are trying to get your hats in the film. It involves the side view of the hat. There is a nuance there that needed to be changed by 1/4 an inch, and I finally got that accomplished. Geez, and I thought I was finished with wood working.
But, no more mods on the blocks. I don't think I can get any closer. Regards, Fedora

I'm assuming all of this info you've given us isn't going to get you in trouble or anything is it? I'm on quite a few movie sites on a daily basis and the rest of the media hasn't even hinted at pre-production on the film. The only recent news was concerning giving the "ok" to the script.
With all of this talk of them wanting to return to the "Raiders Indy look" I'm wondering now if that's not the only thing they'll be returning to. Maybe this film will envolve Marion again after all.

Fedora, would that nuance have something to do the with the block I made and demonstrated 9 days ago? More dome when viewed from the side?
You said in that thread, "I am intrigued by the extra dome." and "I would have to fashion a block with that extra dome, and then see..."

I knew about the block shape being a part of how the "look" occured in the Raiders hat but I had no idea that PAM and Durham's Water Putty were used too.
Well, looks like I'm off to the store for that now. Sheesh, the things you have to do to get the "look".

Absolutley!! You had too much, I did not have enough, so I split the difference.
With that said, my final bondo rendition had the right amount on top, but the blockmaker failed to copy this to the extent that it needed to be copied. So, I pulled out the blocks and corrected this. Since all of my original blocks from him were 6 inches tall, this was no problem to do, just around 20 hours of sanding with a sander. What you must have with that radius on top as viewed from the sides is the ability of the hat to achieve the right look when the crease is pulled down front and back, but also achieve the look when the front crease is pushed up in the front. No weird curvatures going on there, on the front pinch as it approaches the top. Too much radius on top and you get a caricature of the camel humps. Too little and you get too little. A fine line. I've been on this site quite a while now and I've read all of the posts concerning the hats but I quess what I don't really fully understand is how any hat is made.
Without giving away any secrets (because I'm sure each hatter has their own way of doing things) can anyone give me the basic steps on how these hats are made or is there a site that explains it.
To a "Regular Joe" like me reading about all these block shapes and stuff is kind of confusing and I'm left sitting here wondering..."So do you just take some raw felt and push it over those blocks and thats it?"
I'm just curious about the process and not looking to steal any ideas or start my own hat company.

Steve, I just want to let you know I am working on a special ink that is invisible when applied, but very noticable when played back on a movie screen. Kind of like a visual EVP.
All you will have to do is have
http://www.adventurebilthats.com stenciled onto the hat and it will show up on the big screen on Ford's head. You don't have to thank me...

Friends and neigbors, hats are still being mailed each and every day, in spite of this new deal. With that said, I am not getting much sleep this week, as I have to have some hats to ready to be mailed by the end of this week, out west so they can be carried to Ca. next week. My 7 1/4 long oval Raiders block had to be tweaked before I could block a hat on it. I have only used this block a couple of times, but it was one of the ones that Lamode did not pull off an exact copy of my original bondo block. So, I had to put some hours in on it, so I would be 100 per cent certain that it was correct. I even wrote on the bottom, Harrison's block, using the first name as if I actually knew the guy!!
But long hours can make one a bit silly.
Regardless.......for everyones info here, that long oval 22 3/4 inch hat will be turned and styled Raiders, Idol grab(per specifications via my contact) Ok, I have the pc work accomplished for today, and now it is time to mosey out to the hatshop. I am blocking Ford's hat today and will make it later this afternoon once I mail out the hat I finished up last night for a customer here.

Wow. I wonder why that style was selected over the "SOC Bash"?
Do you know if the hats their wanting for the 4th film are all supposed to be modeled after a particular scene....like "The Idol Grab" or the "SOC Bash"?

Hi Pitfall,
You might want to read Fedora's long post in the middle of page 2 of this thread, that has the scoop on the IJ4 hats.
Also, I've heard a few folks propose that the SOC hat was in fact the Idol Grab hat, beaten to heck later in filming. Whether that is true or not, the Idol Grab would be what a pre-distressed Cairo would have looked like in any case.
I might speculate they want them to come Idol Grab so they can give a few the Cairo treatment themselves, as it seems they want both styles...

Yeah, I did read Fedora's post and I knew they were going for the "Raiders Look" but it didn't specify (maybe I missed it) what part of that film's look they were going for. As we all know that Hat changed quite a bit during the film.
I don't want to jinx Fedora by talking to much about this either. He doesn't have the contract yet as far as I know and he's only making the hat currently for Ford. I'm assuming they'll use that hat as an example of what Fedora can produce and then they'll decide IF they want to use the AB.
Fedora, if I'm wrong about that then you can correct me.
When and IF I ever get a chance to order an AB myself then I'll request the SoC bash because I love that look.
I did want to ask one thing. Fedora , IF the hat is choosen for the film do you think you'll end up having to raise the price IF you get overwelmed with orders after the film comes out?

I figured this ment that he wouldn't retire like he said in the earlier post. So going under that assumption I just wanted to know IF he gets the deal and still makes the hats afterwards IF the price would go up. Assuming more people order the product because of the exposure the film gives it.

Just to be clear. If I do get the AB into the film, this would motivate me to keep on for much longer. But, I would sell under the radar, as there is no way I could keep up, with a website advertising the hat. By word of mouth. I do not see how I could do it otherwise. And if they do indeed follow up with 5 and 6, I would want to be in production so I could do these as well. Sandcastles again, but heck, anyone in my shoes would be thinking the same thing.
If the longshot falls short, but I still get to see Ford putting on one of my hats, I will still be one happy camper.
I am just so gratified that one guy, a notable guy by the way, likes my hats so much that he wanted to do this for me. It is amazing, the generosity of some folks. I am still in shock. Fedora

Yes, it's always nice to know that there are still people left on this planet that do things out of the kindness of their heart and don't expect anything in return.
I'm guessing this person was so blown away by the hat that he felt compelled to share it with Ford and whoever else he could show that would appreciate good craftsmanship.
In my mind I just keep seeing those ads that were in all the magazines around the release of LC where it showed the mid-shot of Ford as Indy holding the whip over his shoulder with the hat and other gear on and the tagline was "The man with the hat is back and this time he's wearing a Stetson". Now I would have to guess that had to have had some kind of an effect on Stetson's business regardless of the quality of the hats.
If they signed a deal with you to produce the hats would you have to put in the contract that you don't want this type of exposure or is it because your a "small business" that this wouldn't even be an issue?
I know I'm jumping the gun but I just thought I would throw that out there. I guess the best thing is just to take it a day at a time.
Hopefully you'll at least get a signed photo of Ford wearing the hat. Who know's maybe he'd even write you back.

You're absolutely certain this guys is on the up and up Steve?
I suddenly got an image of this fellow getting on the phone, twirling his mustache and cackling as he says, "Well, I
might be able to get your hats in the new film if you send me a dozen new ABs as soon as possible, and of course I'll see what I can do...no really, no need to thank me...mwa ha ha ha!"
OK, I admit, I'm just jealous I didn't think of it first
But it should come as no surprise that people noticed that you've raised the bar for Indy hats, and taken the Raiders fedora to whole new level. Sometimes it pays off to follow your passion in the long run

for everyones info here, that long oval 22 3/4 inch hat will be turned and styled Raiders, Idol grab
The idea of turning the hat to get the right look is taken for granted here, but I wonder if Harrison Ford was even aware of it. If he wasn't, he may wonder why the pinch is off center in this new hat. This may be something you would want to ascertain before it gets into his hands.
The same concern applies to those on the Indy 4 team who will be examining your samples and making decisions on hat suppliers.

Yep, it could have been turned by someone else who did the bash, and handed to Harrison who fiddled with the hat but probably didn't change the orientation of the bash. Maybe the person who turned the hat didn't even notice it, or isn't with the team for the next movie, in which case the secret is lost except to those of us here.
I hope I'm wrong, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. The Harrison and folks over there would be impressed with your revelation at the very least.

Yes, I did see that, and you are probably right. Still I had to wonder whether the "turn" was included in the specifications; such a thing can easily slip through the cracks since it's apparently a subjective thing, with each head requiring a different degree of turn. Steve himself has said that hats turned by customers look better than ones he's had to turn without seeing it on their heads. So this puts the turn in a slightly different category from dimensions, color, and materials.
Maybe I'm worrying too much, but I imagine Steve only gets one shot at this. Now that the question has been raised, I can sit back and relax and watch the drama unfold.

When Fedora turns the AB's and you put one on do you notice that the hat is off center?
I've read several comments on this board that when the hat is turned that it's kind of feels weird at first when you wear it. I BELIEVE I followed the steps right and that I did "turn" my hat correctly.....Only it doesn't feel weird when I put it on. It's actually quite comfortable.
I'm guessing IF the hat was turned during the entire time of the shoot then Ford will put on the AB and not notice anything different.
I guess it really doesn't matter. It's the AB! Ford is going to love it.

A lot of people (myself included) could feel that it was 'twisted', until the hat relaxed and settled into the new oval. A turned hat on a round head shouldn't feel at all strange (I'd guess), but the more oval in the block, the more the hat might resist - at first.
Mine felt funky for the first week, but now it's like an old glove...sock...slipper...or something that fits like it's supposed to, anyway.

) The A/B and the Akubra have very comfy sweatbands in them. The only reason it may feel odd is because your brain knows the hat is turned. Otherwise, it's a matter of lining up the pinch along the nose bridge.
And with the AB, you just have to think at it. It'll do the rest.
Yeah, the Akubra sweat band is really comfortable I can't even imagine what the AB feels like when you put it on.
After reading what you guys described I'm pretty sure I did the hat "turn" right so it must not bother me like it does other people.

Was your hat blocked round, round oval, or long oval? I'm suggesting that this would make the difference (if those shapes match your head shape, anyway). If your hat is a long oval, it isn't 'ROUND', so it can't just be turned, the oval of the sweat and crown need to be resettle. I your hat was made on a round block, then of course you probably wouldn't feel it.
(Marc or Steve, correct me if I've misfigured.)

I wasn't sure about the turn at first when I was ordering my AB. I was a little concerned it would feel strange, but Fedora convinced me to try it.
Boy am I glad!
For me at least it feels perfectly normal and plenty comfortable. My hat was blocked regular oval. I love the look the turn provides.

Hope things are going smoothly for him.
