Sokay Dave.
I thought the law suit was over LP defecting to Ibanez or something. Just seemed strange that Ibanez would go for that type, having quite the distinct style themselves. I guess that may have been before that evolved though. I love the LP look though, nice thick neck.
That lid really does look great. Love the 'still wide, but not too wide' brim. Was this one of John's improv hats or did you send the specs?
Either way....fantastic lid.

Just noticed - Does HardBop have his crease misaligned? Looks like he may be missing all of that swoopy joy one gets from the 'turn'.

And since I'm going picture happy now...here are two pictures from a photo session we did at the recording studio we did our EP at.
This is the steel grey Penman that was given to me as a gift. It has the most beautiful bow work I have ever seen. There are some pictures of this one too a few pages back. I gave it a deep c-dent/six point top crease. I was goin for a Bogart style crease with a loose pinch and shallow side crease. And that is the Gibson Les Paul Standard there. Beautiful zebra pick ups on this one and an even better flame maple top.

Well, I told John to make it a bit lower in the crown. I think it is 5 1/4''. That height works really well with my face. The brim, I believe is 2 1/2'' on that one with a dimensional cut with the sides being an 1/8'' narrower. An odd cut to the brim but it works splendidly. It allows the sides to curl up very nicely and look natural.
The lawsuit was concerning the headstock. Other companies had used the Les Paul body design but used a different style headstock. Before Ibanez became the company it is today, making great guitars of their own creative merrit, they made great guitars replicating what was popular. So, Gibson sued over the open-book or mustache style headstock that they are so well known for. Ibanez changed the design in '75 and the suit was dropped.

Most certainly, TS. And who it was from makes it that much more special.
Glad you recognize it now. But don't confuse the hat in the first two pics with the last two pics. Two entirely different hats there. I just say because I took pictures of both of those hats on my car dash.

Heh heh heh...Good to have you around here some more Dave! That hat kicks arse. I want John to make me a Penman with similar dimensions (aren't you a 23.25 like me?). I really like that
slight dimensional cut on the brim. I want a really vintage looking lid (reminiscent of the fedoras that farmers, moonshiners and bluegrass pickers would have been seen to wear in the late 30's and early 40's in rural NC) and I think those specs would really fit the bill. Then on to color, and ribbon widths and color combinations and etc. etc. etc.

Thanks, Travis. Yeah, I'm a 23 1/4''. What I wanted with this hat was just a classic 30's looking hat. Something that might blend in with a panoramic shot of some bustling city street in Chicago or New York. I think John nailed it. Those specs are the best specs for me. I'm inclinced to have all my future Penmans have those dimensions but variety is the spice of life.

HardBop -
Daniel Jones - Fantastic lid dude!!! I'm always amazed at John's work.
Looks great with your 'boat race'
Dave - I need more shots of that fantastic lid!! I was looking on John's Facebook page, but couldn't see any shots of it. Been thinking about getting a non-Indy myself, but can decide on a style. I really like yours!!
I'm waiting for a LC Indy lid, because I love the vintage look to that. I think John's thrown it on the block now. I guess my next one from John will be a non-Indy, since I've already got John's Raiders and Steve's CS.

Well, it looks like Earl is going to just barely miss us and head on up north, boomeranging out into the Atlantic again. But as someone that has lived in Miami all his life, these things are not as predictable as meteorologists like to think they are. We have plenty of water and non perishables ready. Right now it's looking nice so I may be able to take some pics but I have to wait for the wife to get home.

Yeah, our first anniversary is coming up next week. It does take some getting used to and I'm still getting used to it.
I remember Dennis. The worst one was Andrew back in '92, I think. It was a Cat. 5. That was real bad. But, I don't think you'll find any Penmans falling from the sky anytime soon. At least not mine. I just cut my mane of hair and my hats are fitting properly again. And with how floppy these hats are, they just flap around in the wind for a while.

Thats the beauty of grey colors; they always take on hues and undertones of your surroundings and even of what you wear. No brown on this hat. But it does seem to be anamorphic in that way. Goes with just about everything in my wardrobe. If you are just my size you can just ask John to replicate this hat exactly as he did for me, though if you don't have the same face shape as me, it may look off.
My wedding hat was the first non-Indy hat that John made for me and that solidified him as my hatter forever. Everyone that sees my hat collection is always drawn straight to that one. He really is a master.
