I had an email from Bink. He's out there for the QM and had a chance to visit with Tony and see the jacket. I would imagine there will be a flood of stuff after folks get up and running after the party is over.
Just checking in briefly while on vacation and getting ready for the QM.
Yes, Tony hand delivered #5 to me on Friday. In fact, Dejah Thoris and I spent an entire afternoon with him that day. All I can say is
fxxxgxn' WOW. This jacket left me practically speechless for several days. I don't remember being this geeked out over any piece of gear, including any other jacket I own. It is true that the pictures do not do this jacket any justice, especially concerning the hide.
I don't know how he did it, but as far as I can see, this jacket is reacting and hanging on my frame more like the movie jacket than any of the Westeds I own. It's simply amazing. I'm wearing this jacket to bed!
As for pictures, sorry, don't have my card reader with me and I'll likely not be back online until after I return from the QM this next weekend. I know that some of you probably wouldn't be happy with this jacket even if it came directly off of Harrison Ford's body right after shooting, but for me, this jacket is my holy grail.
Castor and G, sign me up for that club! I'm a believer!
As for Tony Nowak, he is one of the classiest, most humble, and most sincere men I have ever had the privilege to meet. He never once came off as better than anyone else and is grateful for so much in this life. He is a rare breed and knows there is more to life than just pieces of leather sewn together to make a jacket. He's top notch all the way.

And did your jacket get the pocket fixes/updates, piping etc.?

I have pics of me wearing it, but am not able to download them until I get home next wee. As for the pockets, I let Tony do his thing and was not disappointed one darned bit. Off to the races!

For the jacket in the opening scenes - I don't doubt that this is IT.
However, by Tony's own admission - he says the rest of the jackets in the movie ARE different.
In other words, this hide choice works for the opening scenes jacket but not necessarily for the rest.

I think you may be misinterpreting Tony slightly. He says there are many different jackets in the movie, but the hides are not necessarily that different. We can see that in some of the photos in this very thread.
He also points out where in the movie the jacket he copied appears, not necessarily that it never appears again.
Jackets in the movie are different to the extent that it seems there was not any 'single' pattern followed in making them. As I've said before, the 'one' jacket many people talk about is an amalgam of many. That single jacket doesn't exist.

No misinterpretation. From my conversation with him yesterday, he was VERY clear that this jacket does NOT appear in the movie again and he also said that the other jackets DID have a different look.

I'd be interested in seeing this jacket made in another hide. To me the hide he's using now, regardless of being SA , doesn't look that great in the pics. Maybe it's the photos but the hide comes off shiny and sorta "plastic" looking....

If the pockets were 6 x 8 then the 001/888 should be the same shape, only proportionally bigger. Can we check that?
Wested's pockets are tall, but in width they are bigger than 6 inches. 6 is just too small.
What do you guys think?

I don't think 6 is too small, but I do think you did a good job estimating size from photographs. Determining 6.5 x 7 from 6 x 8 is good.
I think it's also entirely possible there was another jacket used that did have slightly different sized pockets.

To further muddy the waters, it was stated that this jacket Tony replicated was only used in one scene, and other were used throughout the rest of the movie.
It is also entirely possible things like the pocket size and shape as well as pocket flap design was "watered down" in subsequent jackets. That has been suggested before as well.
It is accepted as fact that the jackets all varied
slightly within the same order, and that there were (if memory serves me) three orders in total?
So, I beleive Tony replicated what he had perfectly, but that is not what is seen throughout the "bulk" of the movie (as it appears to me at least).
I think it is awesome what he did, and it sems from the reports coming in he did an excellent job with it.
For me, the jacket pictured here does not have the "look" that looks "right" to me.
And, I will offer that unless you have the same body dimensions as Ford did while wearing that particular jacket Tony replicated, the look will not be the same. I trust Tony to scale it up properly, but be aware that the jacket laying on a bench or hanging on a hangar is not representitive of the way the jacket "looks". It needs to be on a person with the same build Ford had (assuming a direct copy of the original) and then it should "look" right.
I have kept this in mind while looking at the dimensions/measurements given- particularly the back length- as compared to the photos from the film.
I'll just stop now... I am certainly no expert, but when it "looks" right, I know it... And that is COMPLETELY subjective, and needs to be placed in context.
So, back to what started this post for me, the pockets could have been the size on this Nowak all along, or they could have been changed for what ever reason throughout the movie shooting, as I feel could very easily be the case. ;-)

The jacket Ford wears during the "making of" in the Raven Bar scene has tall pockets. Or it maybe the screen size that shows it like that. I don't know but it's worth watching that video again.
Regarding TN's price once again, I remember some years ago I visited Milan and met with "haute couture" Italian fashion designer and extreme high quality jacket maker Paolo Moretti at his shop at Duomo.
We discussed the possible making of a jacket and he said the price could be 1,000 eur (that was near to $1000 back then).
I told the guys here but met discontent and told "why should we pay 1000 if Wested does it for much less?"
Nothing to imply here, just reminding you guys some facts.

Okay, another one of those "Can't this guy add anything meaningful to the conversation?" posts but this is for my own edification.
TN has said this is the jacket used at the beginning of the movie for the jungle scenes. So this is the jacket that is used from the opening credits up to when Sapito and Indy are at the temple entrance (which I believe was shot on set). Wouldn't this also be the jacket Ford was wearing when talking to Belloq after escaping the temple? Unfortunately, the jacket is pretty obscured by cobwebs but there is quite a bit of grain on the collar and other parts we can see.
It would make sense that this was also the jacket used during the Hovito chase (not assuredly so, but why use a different jacket?) except that there is some speculation (and a member has reported that Ford told him) a cloth jacket was actually used in that chase so there's more doubt there.
Again, I'm just wondering exactly where Tony's jacket is on screen. It's a real shame that this jacket isn't that visible as it's mostly cloaked in shadows or cobwebs. Please don't take this as a questioning of authenticity, it's just a lament.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but I was watching Sweeney Todd on HBO last night and I noticed that the character Beadle was prominently wears a jacket made of the same shrunken lamb that TN uses on the Indy I.
It is very had NOT to miss the grain on the hide. You can see it clear as day. None of the is it there or isn't there effect of the Raiders jacket. That being said it is an interesting looking hide. It does have a lot of character to the grain.

I have Hi res pics of BOTH images, I looked at them after the first post was made, i'll post images in appropriate size which show the texture.
I don't see that much texture because the jacket has a lot of distressing due to pocketknife/wirebrush usage.
http://www.theraider.net/films/raiders/ ... ns/r95.jpg
This is the jacket Tony said he copied, honestly I cannot see that much grain on it.
What I also don't see is the big sleeves?
So why did he choose a pre distressed hide??

That texture reminds me of my washed lamb after I washed it again, wrung out the excess water by hand, then threw it in the washer on the spin cycle to remove more water, then threw it in the dryer. It just looks like rumpled leather to me. No black alligator skin leather there. Post Halloween, I've since spray bottled it and ironed it on the permanent press setting
and it looks almost like new again, albeit a tad darker with no green undertone.

In regards to the color you have to factor in the lighting. There are shadows for sure but a lot of the jacket in 5's picture is in bright sunlight. It sure doesn't look as textured as the pics of the TN Raiders but then again overexposed areas of the picture will obviously have lost a lot of detail and then add the low resolution to start with...

Tony's jacket looks great! Is that a Wested?
BTW, I found this interesting. Publicity still:
vs frame grab:
You can see see the texture in the frame grab, but the darker exposure, and reduced contrast, as well as motion blur mask it out.

Indiana Strones wrote:And very different colour: this is brown, TN's is blackish or very dark brown.
That's a very washed out picture of HF in Hawaii. Also, the distressing of the Hawaii jacket only consisted of scraping off some of the top layer of leather, revealing a mid brown suede underneath. There are no acetone highlights in that jacket. It looks very "brown" for that reason. You could do that to your jacket if you were inclined.

I wish that were the case!! I did think about that when there was that horsehide Raiders jacket in the bazaar last week though. But she maintains that two Indy jackets already more than a fella needs and they're ...opposites of each other! (A 2000 Wested lambskin LC no distressing to this day, and a 2008 TN CS). When I snuck a sub-$100 wested into the closet, she contended that that's money that could go towards diapers? I mean we just throw diapers out, c'mon. There's the whole "how many jackets can you wear at once?" (Well, actually, today I wore my Indy jacket UNDER my motorcycle jacket, so hey).
This is the same woman who believes one motorcycle is enough (how many motorcycles can you ride at one?). Crazy, I know
