Nice find! And, selfishly, I'm excited to hear that this piece is available from a contemporary vendor :D

Update! I finally got the scarf after sooo many failed attempts.

Here shown in different lighting and it pretty much does the exact same color shift as the original scarf.

So, in the end, what color IS it?

Is it a traditional camel color? Or something with more gray tones to make that color shift?

Yeah, its more on the taupe side. Its kinda different color to catch as it shifts.

New MOTB gear upgrade. Showcasing one of my cardigans with upgraded leather fotball buttons. I also reinforced the buttonholes on this one.
When I have this on now, with new buttons sewed on, it truly gives me the feel of MOTB even tho I have a vintage cardigan that is more screen accurate then this one here. Go figure! 😆

25mm which is pretty standard for a cardigan.

Could this be the MOTB cardigan?
It’s the only one I’ve found that meets these criteria:
3 part construction shawl collar
Extra high buttons
Horizontal button holes
Vertical ribbing next to the buttons

I have found these in a few colors, but not dark brown. Possibly dyed for the shoot?

Yeah, I have this exact sweater only in burgundy color and I think its a branch from the same tree but not THE branch. The real cardgian did not have the ribbed body pattern. Color is off as well. That sweater looks like its 30'' long or even longer. The real one was short. 25 or 26'' and the pattern was cable knit.

I am very sure they did not dye the cardigan. Remember MotB was a quick and dirty shoot. Ford brought personal stuff he felt would go with the character.

I guess we might never know.

Close enough needs to be the right colour at least in my opinion. You'll have to dye those.

I disagree, screen shots are nearly useless for color, especially since all the shots were seeing are from old SD tv images….
Even Holts stuff is off and can’t be verified for same reason

I totally agree. its in the eye of the beholder. We will probably never know 100% what the real stuff looks like. So until then, its just a color opinion.

Before you do that, can you take some pics in natural light?
Outdoors, and maybe in a normally lit room?
I’d be curious to see how the color reacts.

I use to see that when FS first released their chrome goat, the color was all over the place depending on the lighting.
(I think I have some pics showing this on my site.)

I was thinking about this over the weekend and the idea of gear items being "close enoughs." Traditionally a close enough is a gear item that isn't the exact brand/model used in the movie, but a similar item. Not to be confused with "screen accurate" in which case even the same brand/model that was used in production isn't the same as what is seen on screen unless it is altered to match. In the case of MOTB gear, we have zero information on what brands were used so every piece is going to be a close enough at best. From there we can work toward screen accuracy, but as has been mentioned multiple times, the quality of the images we have to work with make that extremely subjective.

Regards,

Indiana Jeff

I think the "close enough" category is relative and the perception of what is "close enough" will vary loads with each person. As fans we all enjoy Indygear, but perhaps not in identical ways.

Maybe the same fan will want a perfectly accurate hat, but a piece of brown string will be enough as a whip-stand-in. :-k

And for sure it all depends on the info and pics available for the gear.

Cheers,
Bear

I think that might apply in some rare cases, where we don't know the correct colour for '*any* of the gear at all, but we *do* know the correct colour for all of the regular Indy gear, and we have production stills. Items that are not part of the regular gear can be weighed accordingly against what we know is fact. So one can still get very very close even when sourced material isn't best.

That's the thing, though. There's still debate about the right shades of gear from the movies based on lighting and color grading. BTS pictures help and having picture of screen used costume pieces help, but that's the difference between "real world" and "screen accurate." What we see on screen is not what we see with our naked eye.

We don't know what gear was used for MOTB so trying to use "known" gear pieces as a color default to judge other pieces is still highly subjective. A fun rabbit to chase down the hole, but in this case will never be conclusive.

Indiana Jeff

Sometimes makes me long for the days when I ran around with a grey members only jacket on and a jump rope with one handle removed for a whip. Sure I was 8, but if you had asked me then I would have told you that my gear was EXACTLY like they used in the movies. lol

I can't tell you how many hats and jackets I've had that I would have killed for back in the day that I let go because they weren't exactly SA. This hobby can be a double edged sword sometimes. We can get caught up chasing intangible things and unreachable goals. I try to stick with the correct "feel" nowadays and don't worry too much about exactness.

For me it was a tan safari hat complete with puggaree band and a coil of heavy cable wrapped in black electical tape (display on my belt only).

I like having reasonably close gear and certainly over the years here we have had a number of really great vendors turn out great gear, but I've never been one to chase absolute screen accuracy.

Which is why I'm so comfortable with any close enough when it comes to the MOTB look. I have Magnoli Wyoming skarf and cadigan to pair with my standard gear and I'm happy as a clam.

But the joy is in the chase and I happily watch as others like Holt drill into every detail while they are on the hunt.

Indiana Jeff

Time is of the essence! I decided to post my Mystery of the blues gear now before the snow melts away (cuz its getting really warm outside. I had to travel up the moutains to do the shots, . Its been a fun journey and its not over. My next hunt is to find THE cardigan model used. I will find it somehow. By december/january hopefully I will have found it and then I will showcase my updated Motb 2.0. :whip:
This is why you wont find the saxaphone comparison shot in this post. I just cannot make it work with the voboom cardigan. Not to my standards anyways. I have tried! I will wait till I have the real cardigan.

Bear in mind that real Mystery of the blues scenes has been colorgraded in post production and my pictures are taken with a phone in direct light and sunlight. There will be a huge difference.
Also, I will showcase the gear with radio and a webely holster as both items are featured separately in Motb. (go figure! lol )

-Cardigan is the VOBOOM with custom leather buttons. (Not seen in these pictures.)
- LC Legacy wested jacket.
-Vintage 'Motb' gloves with real shearling liner.
-Christy's hat in first picture and my custom LC hat in the rest.
-Pants are wested.
-Shirt is Azuma.
-Cashmere Scarf in brown/taupe color. (bear in mind that light makes it look darker and lighter in different shots)
-Tie is a poplin LC tie.
-Gunbelt is MakeitJones Temple of doom belt.
-LC webelt
-Boots are Aldens.
-Real webley holster screen accurate to Temple of doom.
-Gun is a webley
-Whip is a Morgan
- And a very special Motorola item showcased on the gear. And not just any motorola, nope, THE motorola model used in mystery of the blues. See close up picture.
Final thougths on the VOBOOM cardigan now that I have seen it with the rest of the gear. Its a decent sweater. Not super screen accurate but it does the MOTB job for sure! The sweater gets alittle too stark in color when hit in direct sunlight but if you catch it in natural light it looks pretty good. The collar is alittle to small. However, the leather buttons really made a difference on the sweater. So if your looking for a decent MotB cardigan then the voboom is the one to get. But for a screen accurate stitch nazi like myself, I need to upgrade the sweater to the real one. lol 😉
Hope you have enjoyed! 🙂

as an emt. Who would have thought…

Did you at least get 2 so you can use them? ;)

That’s sweet, love it.
I contacted the Voboom from Amazon, but he wasn’t very helpful in my request for the shortest back. May buy a S & M and see how they fit.
Your stick out just right, I don’t want 2” of sweater hanging out.

But Holt, you’ve done an amazing job.

Thanks croft!

I dont mind a 2'' hang out myself if the rest of the sweater is accurate. But I prefer it being at screen accurate length.

I will update this thread again when I have found THE sweater. Yeah, I know, its a long shot but I will try. If I can not find the one I will opt for one that is extrememly close. I may allready have found one but it will be with a 2'' hang out below the jacket.

The hardest to find is the horizontal collar ribs with cable knit body pattern. That mix is a difficult find. And the horizontal collar lines need to be at the right size, not to wide which most are.

I ended up finding a set of Vintage 25mm buttons, should be in this week, then week after to the seamstress.
Button holes on the Voboom are not the best, but what can you say for $39.99

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LR49KSG?re ... th=1&psc=1

I wish my collar looked as good as the one in the add, Holt you said something about doing something with your collar, mind say what and how?

Went out in the nice hot weather to take a few shots.
Over all is the best close enough to date.
I will continue to search or give in and get a IM, just wish they turn around would be quicker. Or order in the summer for the fall. :-k

Try leaving the top button unbuttoned and train the lapel to roll to the next button down. That should give the lapel a nice lay.

Looks great. did you order a shorter one? I got mine with a 26'' back. This makes mine at perfect length for the jacket-

About the collar. what I did to mine was just train the collar constantly. escpecially when damp. It creates the fold. However, there is not enough material in the collar to make it look identical to he film sweater. However, I quite like the way it sits as is. I get used to it.

Now, swap those black dinner plates to some leather buttons. :TOH:

Roger that on the buttons.
There due tomorrow, and off to the seamstress.
Ya dinner plates, ya got that right.

As far as the length, on the Truck jacket it sticks out more than on my Wested, will see how it fits with the DoD.
But I will be wearing it mostly with the Cocpit Vintage oil rigger jacket.

Collar, right now I have layed out with weight on top, and when at the seam stress, she has a press.
We shall see, but I like it as a very close enough.
Thanks Holt, you are my inspiration. :TOH:
