I love this hat! It is right on par with my Kelso in lova-ability and I wear it with or without Indygear. The felt is incrediblely soft and pliable yet hold its shape great thru all kinds of everyday adventures!

WOW wilbyc82.....That is one of the most awesome Gearhead pics I have ever seen. If Mitch didn`t actually look like Harrison Ford you would be the king of all Gearheads in my book! Great pose, great gear, great look, great colors, background and smirk! Good show man!

If Mitch looks like Harrison, you might be his stunt double, and considering all the dirt in your clothes, you may have gone under the truck, already...

ALL the Gear looks really fantastic (man, it's a good reminder, too, that I have GOT to get my stuff “dusted & dirtied up” a bit before my next photos!) …but WOW, that HAT especially!


I sincerely hope these shots give the fine folks who make these great lids at Steele & Jones a boost in interest and sales, because they SURE DO deserve it!

(And frankly, I'd have bought one by now if I simply didn't have my available money tied up in other projects-in-the-works)

bogie, is that a real hat block you are using?

I'm a bit timid to admit this because I have two hat makers following here lol. Let me prefis by saying that my method is most likely not the most proper of ways of going about it. I have a plastic form which just so happens to form the hat not only to the correct size but also a very Raiders like shape. I use to a tea kettle to steam the hat body before stretching the body over the form. I allow it to sit on the form for a minimum of 24 hours before removal to ensure maximum moisture evaporation. In this case it sat on the "block" for at least three days. After that I remove it from the form I apply a light amount of steam to shape. Is my own little homemade way of maintaining the Raiders look.

Having said that I have been on the hunt for an actual vintage wooden block for quite some time. Something that would of course give me the proper results. As best as a not Raiders specific block could.

So there you have it gentlemen. Any suggestions are always welcome.

I just notice that you have a lot of air between you felt body and block.

Yes there is a bit along the top of the crown. In my previous post, the hat wasn't actually on the "block" when the photos were taken.

The trick with blocking is to stretch the felt evenly and consistently throughout the body. The trick with re-blocking is to do that without involving the brim at all. I can tell by the photos the hat wasn't stretch completly. It's harder then one think it might be.

IJ, sorry for butting in but wanted to help as not to wreck your work.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have an immense respect for the craft of hat making as well as the hat makers themselves. I'm always amazed at what you and the folks at Steele and Jones produce. It's an amazing age for these products with folks like you and Diego around. Trust me if a hat were ever in diar need I would send it to the hat maker for reworking.

Thanks, just tryingto help. I have had custmers send me hats that they have tried to cut the brim of a hat using a simple brim trimmer. Looks easy enough but if it isn't a stiff hat like a cowboy hat, it's not that easy and does take some skill.

Ok, before I really derail this, let's see some more of these hats of these fine stand up gentlemen.

With the recent thread regarding 'Cowboy' and 'Cowboy Hat' comments, I thought I would take a moment and reverse this 'trend,' if you will. Now...this story will sound too unbelievable to even consider true, however (quoting 'Indy'..."Trust Me!''), it really is true. This morning I was entering St. Francis Hospital to do my Friday communion rounds for the patients there and a gentleman stopped me in my tracks and said: "That is a one beautiful hat!" I responded, with a very warm: "Well, thank you..." and he proceeded saying: "That looks just like the one Indiana Jones wears in "The Last Crusade,'' you know -- the one where he and his dad are outrunning the Nazi's on the motorcycle!" I was so dumbfounded (because this is the look I had wanted and asked for...) that I didn't know what to say other then: "Yes, it truly is a great hat and thank you again, for your comments.'' He started walking away from me and met up with a woman (assume is wife, or what not) and told her to turn around and take a look too! He gave me a 'thumbs up' and was off.

Wow! I still can't believe this one. Diego, you folks certainly did good here and Yes, before you say it -- I still owe you a photo. Thanks Steele and Jones and thanks to our Lord for proving there are some people out there -- who are not -- "SO OUT THERE !" W>

I've been lurking around since March, but I decided to post for the first time today, since yesterday I received my Steele & Jones' Raiders Explorador from Roberto himself. I have other gear, such as the bullwhip, LC gunbelt, LC holster and LC whipholder (these three made by Steele & Jones), and the bag, but I thought best to introduce myself with the (IMHO) Crown of the gear, the Fedora.

If someone else told me a story like this I would think they were exaggerating, but it actually happened. Sebastian, it's good to hear from you here. And its also great to make gear for people who had always wanted to get this stuff.

About the hat itself, maybe it is one or at least half size bigger than the one you need. That makes the front brim to look plain, instead of taking the properly curve. And maybe the back part of the hat looks like it has poped out a little bit.
Besides that, the hat looks good on you.
You have also ordered a jacket from us. Let's do one thing. When your jacket is ready, in 1 or 2 weeks, we can do at my home an Indy fans meeting (& BBQ) for the guys in Buenos Aires (or the ones who want to come!), and if you bring the hat and I can work on it. It is much easy to make it if you are present, that making a hat and then sending it to you, as we usually do.
After a few changes, it will look awsome on you. Of course, I'll do it free of charge.

A couple of days ago, my mother called and said," You got a package in but it is really beaten up. I hope it isn`t a hat cuz it is gonna be in serious trouble!" I was expecting my new Steele & Jones Herbert Johnson Streets of Cairo Replica some time this week and knew this was it! I rushed over after work to find this..

I reached in thru a huge gaping rip in the side. My whole hand fit thru and I felt the hat completely flattened to one side crown and brim smushed sideways! Feeling kinda defeated as this was the second time the post office has done this to my Steele & Jones delivery, I went home without opening it. We have had severe rain in the area for the last few days and so I didnt want to open it and risk getting it all wet.
I wanted to make opening it an event with pics and all but I eventually couldn`t wait!
WOW! To be honest, I was half expecting it be like my first Steele & Jones except with dusting added but this thing is a totally different creature all together!
The color, the shape, the distressing and most of all the sizing are so amazingly perfect. I was never a big " Gotta have the name brand Herbert Johnson label" kinda guy. We have so many Penmans and ABs and Garrisons and the likes that can and have surpassed what Herbert Johnson once was so I couldn`t care less about the label. But this detailed replica makes me wonder what I may have been missing especially if I aquired one similiar to Whipwarriors version.
I know this is not a true Herbert Johnson but Steele & Jones version of what once was but this thing rules! But I feel the true magic of the hat comes from the building process that Diego and company put it thru. The crown shape is extremely accurate in every angle...even those small nuances missing from some hats out there claiming to be Streets of Cairo versions. The color of the ribbon vs felt is accurately matched and the dusting is straight off the screen.
I could not be more happy with this hat purchase. I will give it a proper review and detailed photo shoot as soon as the sky clears up and gives me some sun. The details must be seen to be believed!

The sticker reads "RECEIVED UNSEALED". This means USPS received the box smashed from costums, or from abroad?
Because I'm sure the package departed from Argentina intact.
So, the sticker is something like "Sorry, we know at USPS beat up your package, but we prefer to blame the origin post office instead"

Only a few destinations in the world treated badly our packages. And not the whole USA.
But for example, from Miami, New York, and many other USA cities we had good and neat arrivals.
Not possible to us to change the box, due to argentinian post office restrictions for international shippings.

This is our HJ replica.
Made from our special felt run, that replicates EXACTLY the original Raiders Era Herbert Johnson felt.
Color, undertones, thickness, floppiness...ALL is there.
So, it will age, fade, and behave the same way the HERO hat.

I just added some more photos of my new Steele & Jones HJ Replica. These are on a styorofoam head as I was just wanting to capture some details without taking any "selfees". It is still dark and rainy outside and will be for the rest of the week they say but as soon as I can I will take some "on-the-head" outdoor shots!

There are some shots of the liner, the bow, the sweatband..dusting details, and two shots of interest. One is of the hat next to my about over 15 year old AB and the other is next to my first Steele & Jones Raiders which has endured lots of rough stuff! It is hard to tell because of the indoor lighting but the color of all three is very similiar. Not exact but pretty close. I was feeling that my AB had started to lighten up into a too-much reddish tone but when I put all three of these hats into the ditect sunlight, they are all pretty much the same tone, even the ribbon. I wonder why the AB looks "reddish" in other lighting situations? I`ve just decided that the AB is my Raven hat, the HJ Replica my SoC, and the other Steele & Jones my Well of Souls hat!

the head is sitting on my Relic Hunter with my over 20 year old David Morgan 8 Footer used EXTENSIVELY! the idol is a Todd`s. And the figure in the back has a Wested in Washed Goat which doesnt fit me well but looks good on my display with close enough pants, WhatPriceGlory bag, Noel Howard shirt, Keppler Holster (I think) and a real Tibetean Prayer wheel tucked into the belt!

Holy Moly! That's more HJ -- then any HJ's I've seen in a very long time! Unbelievable reproduction! That bash, crown work and now, the brim are perfect! Great dusting highlights! Looks like it just popped off the set of ROTLA! Very nice! Very nice -- indeed , ! W>

I think that the fact that the box arrived beaten up added a lot of character to that hat...even after arriving flat, you poped it out and it still looks like a Streets of Cairo hat... I think I'll get a beisbol bat and hit my own fedora, maybe it helps to get a more screen accurate look!

The sun peeked out for a little bit today but I was at work and didn`t have all my gear but I took some sunlight shots as quick as I could.....

here is my Fedora from Steele& Jones...this one is their regular Raiders model, not the HJ replica. But this is one comfy hat and a pleasure to wear....love the color! Felt is very floppy and the crown was slightly smushed and I didn`t realize it until after these pics...
